I disagree. People working in medicare, important govt levels, and athletes will get the vaccinations before most of everyone else. The issue on the vaccinations will be fan attendance if they get a vaccine starting to churn out by early Jan. By mid-Feb, all the athletes would have gotten it, and by mid-to-late-March, when I assume a Spring Season would start (as does the season), the vaccine will be fully settled into them.

I think the issue, if we do get a verified vaccine claimed around New Year, would be letting fans in. Depends on how COVID's going around in the town of the campus + issues on whether you need a verification of taking a vaccine with the date on it, etc.

Lots of people will get the vaccine (based on priority) long before NIU athletes. Anyone connected to the medical field. If A-Z comes up with a suitable vaccine, for example, I guarantee vaccinations for their people will happen. Doctors, nurses, even the janitor. Police. Firemen. The military. School teachers. The otherwise vulnerable, like those in nursing homes. Etc.

I have a hard time seeing the NIU football team getting it six weeks after it is a go (assuming January 1).

And, these programs will not play if fans can't come. That is part of the decision process right now, the lost revenue from ticket and related sales.

Both valid arguments. It's by no means a sure thing on the spring. Highly likely there won't be 1 magical vaccine that works the same for all, at least not right away, these things take research and tinkering. That being said, the early versions of the vaccine are much more likely to be workable for college-age, relatively healthy, athletes. The fans in the stand? I wouldn't hold my breath on that one.

Even outside of vaccines...there has also been a lot of progress in antibody preventive measures, where teams could potentially get a dose that protects them for a period of weeks/months, and allows the season to happen.

In typical pharmaceutical times, I wouldn't expect those things to be ready for a potential Spring season. But there are so many companies working on different versions, it's certainly possible.

While I agree typically on no fans in the stands, a different TV deal due to the changing circumstances, could make it financially feasible to do so.

To summarize, I have no idea what things will look like then and what will be possible, but I don't think there's a reason to say 100% no to the Spring idea right now.

Hopefully ALL sports leagues have learned the lesson, the only 'bad' option is to not plan for any change and just 'hope' the virus goes away.

RE: 2020 Football Season
Please allow me to summarize what we have here so far:

--- Northern (MAC) does right thing, puts health first. 10 of 10 points. Everybody wearing halos.
--- Northern makes slight cut around money issue but asks for it anyway. View gets foggy, but small chip in halo visible.
--- Board edges toward deep end of dock. Some refuse reality. Others want a different reality. Some ask which reality you talkin' about.
--- Hero emerges (minus spellchecker), delivers lectern-pounding sermon. Some bow. Some write around. Some ignore. Twas ever thus for heroes.
--- Bored posters kick off personal insult game over some kind of hat. Mod says take off your hats.
--- Two days later and ... surprise! ... still no vaccine. Unknown when vaccine. Unknown who will get vaccine first, middle, last when do have vaccine. Some polls say 40% won't take vaccine anyway. Might be same 40% who don't wear masks. Refuse flu shots, get flu, pass it around ... that crowd. Stupidity level: no change.
--- Bottom line: no fall season. Maybe spring. Maybe not. Won't know for 4-5-6 months. Plumes of typed hot air until then.

And this, my fellow Dog Pound(ers), is how us gray-hairs with 4-5-6 decades of Huskie fandom behind us learned how and when to take naps. (Also, the Dog Pound is not the be-all, end-all for Huskie fans.) Tip: life is too short to miss a good nap.

See you in the Springtime (or sooner, if bouncing basketballs make too much noise). In the meantime ... whatever.

Frazier with an excellent interview on Mully and Haugh this morning. One of the few grownups in college football.

So how does it work for the athletes though and eligibility?

I get if it is played in spring it is kinda like nothing happened, but if there is no season at all, has any school touched on that?

I'm proud of NIU for having the common sense to do what's right. This forced the MAC to do what's right. Now the Big10 is doing what's right and now the other conferences will follow suit.

I believe everyone was waiting for someone to step forward. I'm glad it was NIU who had the courage to lead.

Very true. Didn't even think of that. So many different scenarios this year.

Someone like Bowers I would hope gets a shot one more year at the college level to prove himself.

In my mind, it doesn't seem too difficult for the draft to shift back...a month, 6-weeks? Let the season conclude, do a bit more expedited combine-like things, and be ready to rock.

Probably depends on what 'spring' means. Are we starting games in January? or March?

The draft is scheduled for April 29. If the draft is shifted back a month (if the NFL elects to do that), that cuts into OTAs. Remember too that players need time to line up an agent, if they so choose.

If I'm a fifth year senior (graduated already), I might not wait around to play in the spring if the NFL isn't in my future. I may just move on now.

The NFL can push its draft dates back to accommodate college football having to be played in spring.

I would assume NFL owners rather draft players that have played competitive football recently rather than taking chances on players who haven't played in 15+ months.

Do you really think an AD, any team or work place is going to say $ takes priority of the well being of students? Over fans, employees?

These athletes do not get paid. They are not employees. They are not adults with jobs. We can claim all we want the players "have a choice" whether or not to play. Do you really think it's right to put the pressure on the student to play as not to let down teammates? Do you think all these students know the risk? I forgot, there is no risk to them if I read correctly. No threat to anyone they come in contact with either. And before I hear "oh, that can happen anywhere, you lose control of factors you can control or at least limit when you go outside your bubble.

Do we really comprehend the responsibility the school has here? They are going to have enough trouble keeping students in classrooms, on campus healthy.

People need to grow up. This is not about you, your being a super fan, your season tickets, your donation or your bordom. You feel you are being lied too or misled here. Wow. Maybe you should analyze your own belief system and what's important. Maybe figure out what's driving your "opinion" here, or every day. I am guessing for some it's rooted in media, political or moral (or therelackof) beliefs. And I am hardly singling out one group here. We are forced to judge, "take a side" every day and to think my side is right, the only choice.

But I really think if STF, NIUSs decision and explanation is the end all people need to re-evaluate their perspective.

And if we want to spin it towards the field, there is no advantage to playing and they way things were looking for this team, probably the best.
This! Thank you Randy. So much ignorance on this board.
Right on Big Redd. I like to use the term covidiots.

Everyday people thinking they have a Dr. degree because they read some facebook articles for the last 4 months and then telling the scientists how they got it wrong.

The US is cancelling CFB because of these covidiots. They wanted their freedoms and their football. Sure don't wear a mask and we go from 4 mil to 5 mil infections in 17 days.

MLB can't get it right and they are paid pros!

It was impossible to expect the MAC to afford the protocols necessary to keep the players and staff safe especially when 1/2 of society doesn't think it is a big deal.

Ironic comment about the Power 5... if they wanted the season to go on they should have saved their OOC schedules and protected the G5 but truthly that wouldn't have been enough, imho.

THammock said on the video (see earlier post, this thread) they are using controlled practices and taking all recommended steps to minimize health impacts. So ... practice is slowed and spread out. Add that to probably a similar situation in spring. Both together add up to a longer-term but more "normal" runup to fall 2021. Go from there. That's just IMO.

Pretending that health is the only reason, however, is &*%$&*#t. If health was the reason, by itself, Northern and the MAC would not be holding open the option of a spring "season" and jamming it in front of fall 2021. They'd just write it off, take the financial hit, minimize impacts and move on to fall 2021. There is ALWAYS a money factor.

But NIU has to do what has to be done. Health and safety are #1. That's a given. We expect no less. Not one student-athlete would be there is they didn't want to be. NIU gives them the opportunity. In exchange, NIU takes on the responsibility to keep student-athletes as safe and healthy as possible, and help them recover when injured. That is ALWAYS the FIRST obligation.

Add Covid-19 to the seasonal flu, and it becomes a double threat. Both are respiratory diseases (as far as science can tell us), and we're heading into flu season. I'd hate to think what the two together would do.

That said, I respect and admire NIU and the MAC for cutting through all the &*%$&*#t and doing the right thing.

So ... spring ... on to the next possibility.
They are likely wanting to have Spring games partially due to $, but I think the larger reason is for the players who want to play badly.
Yeah and why close an option if tou don't have to. Time to make that decision is on 2021.

Plus if you did it early players would leave due to the premature decision.
