But I think Wisconsin and others can "get by" for a delayed season with exorbitant donations to make up for obscene spending.

These massive spending programs need to come back down to planet earth. Maybe this will cause college football and basketball to come back to reality. There is no reason college football coaches should be making more than $1 million. There are many schools spending more on their coaching staffs than NIU does on its entire football program. The priorities in many college athletic departments is not fiscally responsible. Stop spending so much on coaching and massive, fancy athletic facilities.

I remember reading about how roughly half of the D1 FBS teams out there make money or break even. A lot of these big names end up losing money with how much they drop on coaches and big time facilities.

To emphasize this point, Alabama just gave offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian an $850,000 RAISE!! He will be making $2.5 million next season.

RE: 2020 Football Season
Can someone show me this high morbidity rate for people in 18-40 age bracket? How about hospitalizations? When flu season comes around are we shutting down then? Covid is very contagious but really not more deadly than any other. Where was panic of H1N1. Why do grocery clerks have to work. I follow common sense rules, wash hands, clean, disinfect, sanitizer, cough in my sleeve, where a mask when in crowded area, doing what I need to do. We know a lot more now. Not the boogie man

2020 Football Season
I am all for good practices next spring and summer and then go full force for a nice season in fall 2021. That is, unless China sends over another novel virus.

RE: 2020 Football Season
Agree, but things are constantly changing, so who knows?

THammock said on the video (see earlier post, this thread) they are using controlled practices and taking all recommended steps to minimize health impacts. So ... practice is slowed and spread out. Add that to probably a similar situation in spring. Both together add up to a longer-term but more "normal" runup to fall 2021. Go from there. That's just IMO.

Pretending that health is the only reason, however, is &*%$&*#t. If health was the reason, by itself, Northern and the MAC would not be holding open the option of a spring "season" and jamming it in front of fall 2021. They'd just write it off, take the financial hit, minimize impacts and move on to fall 2021. There is ALWAYS a money factor.

But NIU has to do what has to be done. Health and safety are #1. That's a given. We expect no less. Not one student-athlete would be there is they didn't want to be. NIU gives them the opportunity. In exchange, NIU takes on the responsibility to keep student-athletes as safe and healthy as possible, and help them recover when injured. That is ALWAYS the FIRST obligation.

Add Covid-19 to the seasonal flu, and it becomes a double threat. Both are respiratory diseases (as far as science can tell us), and we're heading into flu season. I'd hate to think what the two together would do.

That said, I respect and admire NIU and the MAC for cutting through all the &*%$&*#t and doing the right thing.

So ... spring ... on to the next possibility.

No, I guess COVID-19 originated in Monaco, asshat.

You are correct that it originated in China, but if we had a president who was slightly better than incompetent,we would possibly have a football season this fall. Stop being part of the problem, Dogfan.

NIU leadership with the right call. They'll get more of my money from this decision than they would have trying to make this crazy season work at the risk of unpaid athletes and their families/friends/etc.

I think it's fine to keep the spring open as a 'possibility', still many treatment/vaccine options that we'll know more about by then. It's no sure thing. And maybe, just maybe, some people will start to act a bit smarter and lessen the spread.

They are likely wanting to have Spring games partially due to $, but I think the larger reason is for the players who want to play badly.

I don't think there will be a spring season. Just for argument's sake, if one agrees with this decision, pushing fall sports to spring supposed that by February, something will be different. That is unlikely.

Even if a vaccine is ready at the end of the year, like (optimistically predicted), there is little hope that enough people will be vaccinated and protected by February (or even march) to make a difference.

I disagree. People working in medicare, important govt levels, and athletes will get the vaccinations before most of everyone else. The issue on the vaccinations will be fan attendance if they get a vaccine starting to churn out by early Jan. By mid-Feb, all the athletes would have gotten it, and by mid-to-late-March, when I assume a Spring Season would start (as does the season), the vaccine will be fully settled into them.

I think the issue, if we do get a verified vaccine claimed around New Year, would be letting fans in. Depends on how COVID's going around in the town of the campus + issues on whether you need a verification of taking a vaccine with the date on it, etc.

Lots of people will get the vaccine (based on priority) long before NIU athletes. Anyone connected to the medical field. If A-Z comes up with a suitable vaccine, for example, I guarantee vaccinations for their people will happen. Doctors, nurses, even the janitor. Police. Firemen. The military. School teachers. The otherwise vulnerable, like those in nursing homes. Etc.

I have a hard time seeing the NIU football team getting it six weeks after it is a go (assuming January 1).

And, these programs will not play if fans can't come. That is part of the decision process right now, the lost revenue from ticket and related sales.
