RE: 2020 Football Season
Saw that. That's why I said "some." There are comments on the main csnbbs board to the effect that the MAC knew what was going to happen, and there is a commentary on Redstate that cites the Big 10 leading the way. (can't find the link).

However, I'm not averse to admitting the bulk have given NIU and the MAC credit. And the "leading" comment may have been a reference to the other Power 5 conferences, if they follow the Big 10. Brain needs to slow down. Too much excitement for the old guy. Nap time?

RE: 2020 Football Season
I have really read some ridiculous stuff on this board before. I've read plenty of "opinions" on the net, which in the last few months have become even more irrational. I guess this board should be no different.

Do you really think an AD, any team or work place is going to say $ takes priority of the well being of students? Over fans, employees?

These athletes do not get paid. They are not employees. They are not adults with jobs. We can claim all we want the players "have a choice" whether or not to play. Do you really think it's right to put the pressure on the student to play as not to let down teammates? Do you think all these students know the risk? I forgot, there is no risk to them if I read correctly. No threat to anyone they come in contact with either. And before I hear "oh, that can happen anywhere, you lose control of factors you can control or at least limit when you go outside your bubble.

Do we really comprehend the responsibility the school has here? They are going to have enough trouble keeping students in classrooms, on campus healthy.

People need to grow up. This is not about you, your being a super fan, your season tickets, your donation or your bordom. You feel you are being lied too or misled here. Wow. Maybe you should analyze your own belief system and what's important. Maybe figure out what's driving your "opinion" here, or every day. I am guessing for some it's rooted in media, political or moral (or therelackof) beliefs. And I am hardly singling out one group here. We are forced to judge, "take a side" every day and to think my side is right, the only choice.

But I really think if STF, NIUSs decision and explanation is the end all people need to re-evaluate their perspective.

And if we want to spin it towards the field, there is no advantage to playing and they way things were looking for this team, probably the best.

You are completely misguided on this!
Athlete or not, 18 to 22-year-olds are just as susceptible to being Covid infected, but their likelihood to becoming severely ill immediately is significantly less. And it's been documented that even the very young can transmit the illness. Because this is a novel virus -- meaning completely new and unfolding -- there is no way of knowing long-term affects regardless of age for those who are asymptomatic. Autopsies performed on those who have died -- regardless of age -- have revealed blood clots and varying degrees of damage to organs.

RE: 2020 Football Season
From Sports Illustrated

It would be somewhat ironic if the multi-billion-dollar college football industry was felled by the MAC, which would rank either ninth or 10th in a hierarchy of the 10-conference FBS. Even more specifically, it could be Northern Illinois—coming off a 5-7 2019 season—that ultimately pushed the first domino.

Sources told SI Friday that NIU was the school advocating hardest for a fall postponement, and that it was likely the Huskies simply would not play in the fall even if the league voted to proceed with the season. Ultimately, the vote went the other way.

“The science told us what we need to do,” a MAC source said. “Health and safety was our primary concern, and not other factors.”

But there is an alternate viewpoint regarding the MAC decision: that it saw which direction Big Ten leaders were contemplating going and simply decided to go there first.

"My theory is they know what the Big Ten is going to do,” said one administrator from a Group of 5 conference. “I think the Pac-12 is ready to go as well and everyone else follows suit.”

RE: 2020 Football Season
That's the one I read, was looking for and couldn't find.

IMO, questions about cost, transparency, options, etc., are still legitimate. So are complaints/criticisms (the world's #1 sport). Those will happen no matter who steps up to the lectern, or why.

That said, The MAC made the right decision putting health at #1 and taking whatever financial lumps there are. Had to be done. The threat of health and safety issues and risks, with school "opening up," doesn't change until there is a workable vaccine.

As for football, as just one of the cancelled seasons, I'm choosing to look at it this way: practice is slowed and spread out. Add that to probably a similar situation in spring. Add both together for a more "normal" runup to fall 2021 and go from there.

Until there is a vaccine, health/safety has to be #1. As a "member" of the highest-risk population, I cannot justify wanting for myself what I would dismiss for others.

Do the current players lose a year of eligibility? What about the seniors?

I never want to see any cute media clips about how Huskies never quit again.

Premature. The odds of the BIG 10 doing the same are probably greater than 50%.

They do this for "safety", yet are having thousands of students back on campus who will be travelling from their homes in the Chicago area to DeKalb every single weekend now that there will be nothing to do on the weekends.

RE: 2020 Football Season
Initially I was pretty negative on the MAC cancelling and NIU being the lead character in helping that. However I kind of think it’s for the better.

You can’t be half pregnant, and I think the P5s forcing ahead to play is the wrong choice. What if a few star players catch COVID? Even if they are asymptomatic, they won’t be able to play for several weeks. Now your season is impacted greatly. So many scenarios that could just throw the whole thing into a “should have waited” ordeal.

I know it’s not ideal, but all teams and conferences should just wait til the spring.....AND GO TO THE ORIGINAL GAME SCHEDULES

The top P5's would have to go from their star players
to their top 20 position players if the stars tested positive for Covid19. 03-lmfao

Great. Late winter/early spring weeknight games on a fringe ESPN channel. What about Saturday games on ESPN3?

When the Power Five turned their backs on the MAC and the mid-majors by cancelling games the writing should have been on the wall for these big conferences. They should have stepped in to help so we all could have a season.

This was a good read. Also interesting was the Clemson embedded piece about their entertainment village. I don't know what the solutions are but perhaps 100% of donation to a specific sport or athletics becomes a thing of the past. Maybe with each donation, a percentage can go to other things to be used outside of athletics. People have a lot of pride in their school/team and want to give. If you aren't going to cap that, find a different way to at least help others a little.

I am really getting tired of Brett McMurphy's tweets about a) how much money a P5 is losing and b) them asking for donations to cover the cost. I don't mind a G5 coming out and being honest. I mean $3M to NIU is obviously a huge deal. But I think Wisconsin and others can "get by" for a delayed season with exorbitant donations to make up for obscene spending.

Bravo, Randy—well thought out and delivered.

I guess the only thing I’m not seeing here, and this is personal opinion, on how dumb an idea it is to play football in the spring. I know you have to keep the door open, but virus aside, how realistic is it to play a season that would end May (if you start games in March—which mean you have to practice in January and February—not a great condition for northern teams, even with indoor facilities) and then start almost right back up in June/July for a season starting in August/September.

Also, IF there is a high school season in the spring—you can at least recruit during this time. The MAC schools surely have a database of players but they also scrape the fringe players that you really have to see.

I’m OK with the leaving the door open, but not sure it’s the wisest thing long term.

These massive spending programs need to come back down to planet earth. Maybe this will cause college football and basketball to come back to reality. There is no reason college football coaches should be making more than $1 million. There are many schools spending more on their coaching staffs than NIU does on its entire football program. The priorities in many college athletic departments is not fiscally responsible. Stop spending so much on coaching and massive, fancy athletic facilities.
