Very true words. The ONLY reason P5 is pushing football is because they will lose a ton of money by not playing football. They won't get their $40+ million in annual TV revenue per school, CFB playoff system revenue, etc.

AAC probably feels obligated to play because they keep trying to tout themselves as P6. So if they don't play and P5 does then that just shows their true separation and makes them unequal.

Big Ten:

Quote:TV agreements that took effect at the start of the 2017-18 school year and resulted in payments of roughly $54 million to each of the 14-team conference’s 12 longest-standing members.

SEC:

Quote:the Southeastern Conference reported just under $660 million in revenue for fiscal 2018, resulting in an average of $43.7 million being distributed to the 13 member schools that received full shares.

Didnt STF want to leave FBS and do spring fb before the Covid 19 hysteria?

Coincidentally he started beating his drum about safety and moving to the spring right after the Big Ten announced a conference only schedule. But it's only about safety right?

Yep, he wants to change NIU football and MAC football as we know it.

Time for new leadership,

Do the current players lose a year of eligibility? What about the seniors?

I never want to see any cute media clips about how Huskies never quit again.
Those guys will not have a season either, so net neutral with making their moves as far as playing goes.

You dont know that yet.
Prairie you are right, none of us know yet, we will see but I believe strongly this will definitely all shut down. To be clear, this just kills me because Huskie and college football in general is so important to me- I just do not see a path

Time for new leadership,
The MAC and NIU have to stay FBS. If STF continues to not support this I will be first in line to push for a new leader of our athletic department.

I work for a payroll & HR software company that has a heavy hand in businesses of all ranges, including some institutions. I can tell you from what I've seen, almost every school in Illinois is hurting right now in a really bad way

+1. This is the first domino. All of the conferences were waiting for someone to go first.

What about away game tickets that were paid for? I am leaning towards a full refund immediately on everythimg.

I emailed back as a donation. I'm sure you can email them at huskiestickets@niu.edu and ask for full refund or a refund on just your away game tickets.

The letter did not mention loss of ESPN tv revenue. So is the MAC still expecting ESPN to pay them or is the true loss greater than $3 million?

RE: 2020 Football Season
This is the proper call. I saw a tweet that NIU was not going to play regardless, a decision made by President Freeman and announced to other MAC schools on Thursday. This was the reason for the delay until today.

I will also donate the cost of my season tickets.

RE: 2020 Football Season
With conference only play anyway, there is no reason we couldn’t play a spring schedule even if we were the only conference to do it. Would actually be good for exposure we’d be the only game in town when things hopefully start to get back to normal. May make fall ball harder with less time to heal from injuries but may not be a bad thing.

Thanks for posting. Still wonder about that $830K from ESPN, but maybe they're waiting 'til spring also. Again, we don't know what the contract says. (not a public document).

Article from Yahoo Sports, it sounds like NIU was leading the charge to move the season to Spring.

NIU needs to track student athletes and Covid. I bet none will have more than mild cases. In fact. I think there will be more positive tests because they do not have a season and have more time to play. Student athletes are in a age group that is not impacted seriously by this or any virus

And from SI with story that other conferences may follow:

Quote:Even more specifically, it could be Northern Illinois—coming off a 5-7 2019 season—that ultimately pushed the first domino.
Sources told SI Friday that NIU was the school advocating hardest for a fall postponement, and that it was likely the Huskies simply would not play in the fall even if the league voted to proceed with the season. Ultimately, the vote went the other way.

Quote:The conference presidents initially met Thursday to finalize the league’s scheduling format. However, Northern Illinois president Lisa Freeman, a former research scientist at the University of Rochester School of Medicine, indicated her school would not play this fall because of the health and safety concerns, sources said.

“The league didn’t like the look of NIU going out on their own and not playing,” said a source, explaining the MAC’s non-vote on Thursday.

I'm missing something. A press release they aren't playing sports. What did you want them to say? What did you think they were going to say?

You are likely correct, most but not all people in this age group do not become seriously ill from this disease and athletes probably have exceptionally good immune systems. However, if they do get it they can spread it and a small percentage of people in all age groups that get this disease and survive it will have devastating life long consequences. Bottom line, I am proud of President Freeman for her leadership on this issue.

There are things about our country's culture that have made us less successful than others in controlling the spread of this virus. Our best hope is that we will have some better therapeutics and a safe and effective vaccine or vaccines that help us get back to normal. Unless this happens soon we will be looking at a devastating impact on our economy.
