What a dream scenario for JMU.
There's always the argument that these teams would not schedule JMU. That's the excuse that we always hear---that teams won't schedule us because they'd rather face a patsy. I don't know how much I believe that---I believe there is some truth to it---but far less truth than JMU claims.
JMU's decision to base whether they would play a 2020 fall season or not, exclusively on if there were an FCS post season, is proof (to me anyway) that they are firmly comfortable in FCS.
I thought JMU should have scheduled an FBS heavy independent schedule, regardless of whether there were FCS playoffs or not, and even if they were the only FCS team to play. But that's because I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to have a successful season and use it as a springboard to a move up to the FBS. It's clear JMU has outgrown the FCS and more significantly the CAA.
But it seems that JMU is abundantly satisfied and comfortable with their FCS bully boy model. And if they are intent to stay FCS for life then their decision to cancel fall football is completely in line with their vision. I felt that IF there was a season, JMU had to play---But now there is no season, so it doesn't matter. Hopefully there is a spring season
There's something to be said on JMU not willing to put their eggs in an FBS independent basket this season, if JMU believes it's too risky a gamble to play a season that they believe will eventually be cancelled. With the entire FCS basically cancelling the season, JMU is now off the hook
Hopefully their conservative approach will pay off and JMU will be in a better place after the dust settles on this season. With the entire FCS basically cancelling the season, JMU is now off the hook. If there was ever a time to monitor the situation, I guess it's now during this covid-19 crisis
