It's good that Rahne and the staff will probably get to see the players in actual football like situations. I don't have a great deal of confidence that a season is actually going to take place.

Yep. This at least gives the coaches an idea of what they have to work with. WF is out, HU is out, UConn is out... I figure if UVA weasels out of coming here, thats the last shoe to drop. Not much point burning eligibility and the expense of opening the stadium for 5 CUSA games. They'd likely curtail tailgating etc too.

RE: Practice starts Thursday
After missing the spring practices and most of the summer workouts, happy to see this staff finally get a chance to work with the athletes on the field. Gotta lot of work to do.

Miss having Bohannons sleeper interviews with players and coach after practice. Never learned a thing, but still enjoyed hearing players upclose and counting down the days to kick off.

Agreed. Rahne is tight-lipped. Probably the only think BW is better than Rahne at is talking to the media.

Bump

Still not a word on how practice is going, if it is going at all. A word from the coach would be nice. Is he able to name a first unit? Any stand outs? Surprises? come on man, we're dying out here.

There was only like 35 players in camp and I don't think they even got in pads before getting shutdown. I thought they should of gone a littler longer, before pulling the plug. That would have given the coaches a little more time to see what they got.

Was told they would restart practice after Labor Day. It will be a spring like training/practice schedule.

Sounds like a missed opportunity. If we had a full regular practice year without losing eligibility that could help us. But now it sounds like our guys are going to be a year behind and very rusty with the whole team not only removed from football but actual practice too. That could be a significant disadvantage for us against conference peers next season.

I’m pretty sure he means Labor Day 2020. It’s only 2 weeks away. I don’t think they are missing much practice. Certainly won’t be a year behind.

The plan is to have a fall practice in the spring, since at the moment they’re planning on playing games.

But also remember, that break paid off for UAB. The one thing they had in spades over the rest of CUSA, older players. If the ncaa grants each athlete that didn’t play this season a stop on their clock for this season, we’re going to have some 6th year seniors, 5th year juniors and 4th year sophomores and so on. It sucks for this year but that will pay dividends moving forward.

That's a good point about UAB.

But will that have any effect on the incoming freshman class that we're all so excited about? With the scholarship limit (and our financial pressures to fund them), I just wonder if the 6th year senior class can even be accommodated--NCAA eligibillty aside.

We're going to have one or two 7th year seniors. Derek Wilder was given a 6th year of eligibility for this season.

It’s certainly going to require a balancing act by the staff. But with missing spring and summer practice, we never got that bigger roster cleanup that happens with new coaching staffs. Then you have the guys who decide to transfer on their own and others who may decide to just start their career. So there is enough flexibility in there for the staff to figure out the most deserving athletes for scholarships.

Looks like NCAA is gonna give everyone, even those that play another year of eligibility.

I think that is the fair thing to do. They are playing a shortened season and there will be asterisks on everything in the books.
