Football- when does decision need to be made
As we dig into August, I wonder what the drop dead timing is for a decision whether to play this Fall of delay into Spring. I seem to remember allot of talk that all this was going to have TBD by end of July. WE have blown by that timing and seems quiet right now. Anyone have a take on this?

I talked to an assistant AD last Wednesday and that person felt the league would make an announcement in the 7-10 day range. STF also had an article late last week in the Dekalb paper saying a decision was “imminent”. Based upon that info-if accurate would probably mean this week sometime. With our opener being pushed back it does give NIU a little more time.

The NCAA is expected to reach a verdict on fall sports tomorrow.

Ahead of that decision the P5 sent a shot across the NCAA bow saying more or less if the NCAA kills fall sports the P5 will walk away and stage their own championships.

P5, G5 and FCS are going to keep going with fall football until they're forced to stop. And that makes some sense since there's no guarantee that spring will be any better Covid-wise. My gut feel is that fall seasons will start sometime in September and everyone will get four or five games in before having to shut down when all the students get sent home. Then they will figure out how to play another four to six games in spring to complete the season.

I have to assume that college football wants to give MLB, NBA and NFL as much time as possible to see how they fare.

No educated person believes fall football is going to happen based on the pandemic wildfire we're experiencing right now, but there's just too much money not to at least try to use college kids as trained seals/guinea pigs and give it a shot.

"If the kids get sick, then we'll cancel. No skin off our noses."

With all the P5 conferences deciding their season fate it seems odd the MAC hasn't announced its own. It will either be a season of conference-only games or postponed until next year.

& I.

Options range from a conference-only model to formats that would allow for 1-4 non-conference opponents.

MAC is the lone FBS league to not have settled on a model.

MAC should just stick with a conference-only model. There aren't enough P5 non-conference games available for MAC teams to pickup that many non-conference games and none of us have money to buy 1-AA games without getting the P5 guarantee games. Additionally, going with conference-only gives schools flexibility to reschedule games if breakouts occur.

The cost of keeping a college football team safe from the virus and test will be expensive. Might not make sense to play at all this fall, but if we do we might as well keep it conference only, and schedule enough off weekends to allow for make-up games should the virus force a scheduled game to be postponed. Play the usual 8 conference games and conclude with a championship game. Start in September and have the championship game before Thanksgiving. Just hope the conference grows a pair and doesn't allow ESPN to decide the schedule.

5-8 game schedule, MAC only or I think the cancel season and the perhaps should. Not getting $ from big boy games perhaps they perhaps are losing $, even with ESPN. Would be interesting to see if anything has/would change with ESPN deal if they are playing. I know this may not be popular here, but if they are serious about playing and don't think there will be fans, perhaps they could structure every game to be a weeknight game if ESPN is in need of programming. NBA won't be scheduled to start until December 1.

I would hate the all-weeknight approach, as would all of us, but if that made it possible to recoup the dollars from the lost paycheck games it would make some sense. Sadly.

RE: Football- when does decision need to be made
Recall, the TV contract is actually between two private entities, MAC headquarters and ESPN, not the 12 public universities and ESPN. Also, the contract is not a public document, so we don't know what conditions/provisions are in it in the case of unplayed events. IMO, that may be one reason we are not seeing/reading a lot from ADs and coaches about the options. But of course that does not mean there is no consulting between MAC and schools going on.

Having fall sports like football will be a financial drain on the athletic budget. No money games, no fans. Etc. To conserve cash, the need to eliminate travel
