If NCAA cancels fall sports, P5 exploring holding their own championships
Power 5 Leaders Exploring Possibility of Staging Their Own Fall Sports Championships
The NCAA Board of Governors is expected to decide the fate of fall sports championships—except for FBS football—on Tuesday.
ROSS DELLENGER AND PAT FORDE 46 MINUTES AGO

In anticipation of the NCAA Board of Governors potentially canceling or postponing fall sports championships, Power 5 conference leaders have begun exploring the possibility of staging their own championships in those affected sports, multiple sources have told Sports Illustrated. This could be seen as a first step toward a long-theorized breakaway from the NCAA by the 65 schools that play college sports at the highest level.

The Board of Governors, comprised primarily of university presidents and chancellors from all levels of the NCAA, has a meeting scheduled for Tuesday. At that time it is expected to make a decision on the fate of fall sports championships other than FBS football, which has a championship outside the NCAA structure. However, the board also could delay action until later in August.

In recent days, Power 5 conference officials began seeking feedback from their members about the feasibility of staging their own championships during the fall, sources told SI. When asked if such a move away from the NCAA championship structure could be seen as a precedent-setting rift between the national governing body of college sports and the Power 5, one athletic director said, "If I were (NCAA president Mark) Emmert, I'd be really worried about it. He's got to keep the Power 5 together."

Another Power 5 athletic director said he thinks the chances of breakaway fall championships are remote, but added, "I think this is representative of the poor relationship between the (NCAA) national office and our conferences."

Multiple sources said part of the motivation for the Power 5 considering hosting its own fall Olympic sports seasons is to justify playing football, the revenue-driving sport for all athletic departments at that level. If all the other sports are canceled but football perseveres on its own, the optics would open up the schools to severe criticism. Thus, playing all fall sports would allow those schools to say that they are not uniquely subjecting football players to any risk.

RE: If NCAA cancels fall sports, P5 exploring holding their own
This disease will change student athletics, unlike professional sports , the default go to scenario is keep students safe during the pandemic. if one football player succumbs to the disease during the season, the reverberations a will be massive. No, the autonomy 5 will no create their own championship if the NCAA shuts down college athletics. On the contrary , the NCAA will use this opportunity to reel back most autonomy they relinquished to the Power 5. The gravy train is done. College football will change tremendously and COVID 19 has just stepped up conference realignments.

RE: If NCAA cancels fall sports, P5 exploring holding their own
It’s bound to happen sometime. I think becoming a league of its own is ultimately what’s best for the players too. Pay the players.

I personally thought it would happen when all the network contracts get negotiated but I can see how the pandemic would accelerate the idea. I think ND in a conference for once really helps the situation.

The AAC will find a way to be relevant. Our programs have mass appeal and we have a decent partnership with ESPN.

They might split, but they won't play fall sports if the NCAA cancels. I'm also getting a bad feeling about football.

If the programs will be able to afford it in the AAC. I would actually see a big drop in ESPiN inventory. Then it is a gamble at that point

True - this is the P6 plus Notre Dame versus the G4 plus NCAA. No doubt Aresco is behind this. In fact, likely the leader.

I do not believe the P5 will go it alone if they depart from the NCAA. 65 teams is not enough. I see them taking 20 or 25 additional schools with them. Probably BYU and most of the AAC, some of the MWC, Army and a small number of other universities will go with the P5 to form an independent football only group.

I have read that the NCAA keeps 70 to 75% of all monies collected and distributes the remainder to the schools. In a split much of that money will go to the P5 and whoever they take with them when they depart from the NCAA.

This is a bunch of speculation. The actual facts are that the NCAA (who doesn't sponsor championships for football), is considering cancelling championships for the sports that don't matter (just this year). So the P5 is basically considering hosting their own lacrosse championships this year, and everyone is losing their minds.

IT will need to be a "P6", even # for playoff purpose, AAC will remain in tact and be re-seated at the "BIG BOYS" table as it used to be.

They will most likely have 6 conferences of 16 members each.

Aresco should be fighting for this with everything his old bones can muster... I'll provide the 5-hour energy drinks.

YES, but it breaks up an otherwise boring sports summer.

"Is this the final break?" The source asked. "You could have two championships: one from the (Power 5) and potentially some Group of 5s joining them, and a second one for everybody else in the spring. ... It's going to be real strange."

Would be interesting 07-coffee3

RE: If NCAA cancels fall sports, P5 exploring holding their own championships
Remember that it was the Ivy League that made the first move to spring... The Ivy league does not participate in post season football play so it was an easy decision for them, other FCS conferences will have to consider the potential loss of revenue gained from the playoff system...

But then again, it is only FCS conferences that have opted for spring play so far, and most of those probably would not have been represented in the post season playoffs.

I think this is just a message to the ncaa that the schools/conferences will be the ones to decide if they play this year and not the ncaa.

Could also be a trial balloon testing fan/press reaction to this possibility.

Wrong. The A5 (or 6) will always need opponents. Some of the prestige of the so-called power schools is based on on field success, i.e. record.

Every game is a zero-sum situation - there will always be one winner and one loser. If A5 schools only play each other, then it is mathematically impossible for all the schools to maintain those records over time. That diminishes the 'P5' brand, and the brand is the whole point.

More simply put, the A5 needs the UTEPs, UConns and Akrons of the world to go 0-12, 1-11, 2-10, etc. so that the worst A5 teams' records are in the 4-8 to 6-6 range. It may not always play out that way with a Rutgers, for example, but it allows most A5 teams to have seasons that at least on the surface appear successful.

Playing devils advocate, in football, if they split, why do you believe the P5 wouldn't continue to play games against NCAA (G5) teams and visa-versa? NCAA teams would need the buy games, P5 would need opponents. P5 doesn't need to allow G5 teams to compete for their championship. NCAA teams play NAIA teams. This would be no different. And to those who suggest the NCAA teams would boycott the P5 teams, you really think a school like Akron would bypass a huge payday?

Its much different in basketball because of the NCAA tournament. The value of the tournament is the first and second rounds, the upsets, the little sisters of the poor beating the big bad state university. The tournament is worth $1 billion per year, that is way more cash than the BCS tv rights, which are about 60-70%. The question is what would be the fee for P5 tournament? Would they add a few conferences like the BE to add depth? Since the p5 only gets a minimal amount of the payout currently for the hoops tourney, they still may receive a bigger financial payout by having their own tourney.

I was assuming that a split meant A5 only, as has been implied. Could still happen, similar to scheduling FCS opponents, but would likely be limited to 1 or 2 games. Not enough to flip the math.

It may not always play out that way with a Rutgers, for example, but it allows most A5 teams to have seasons that at least on the surface appear successful.

I could see it playing out 1 of 2 ways-

1. they take the AAC, Army, BYU, Air Force, and possibly Boise with them. Those are the only schools who have a legitimate shot at hanging with the A5. They may have scheduling arrangements similar to the NFL where 1 or 2 games each year are assigned based on the prior year record (i.e. Wake Forest would play another weak A5 team like Texas Tech or Kansas), and 2 bad AAC/Independent schools (i.e. Tulsa from last year). The A5 team would feast on 2-3 wins against weak schools and protects the A5 from getting hit with competition in the playoff race since they can claim "oh the AAC is weak" even when it isn't. Meanwhile, the best AAC schools would get be able to get one headliner game every year in out of conference (i.e. Memphis/USF/UCF/Cincy vs. Oklahoma/Georgia/texas/Ohio State).
2. The AAC and above schools mentioned are legitimately included in an expanded playoff, and the old NCAA schools become the buy games. The only issue is that the AAC overlaps the SEC, ACC, and Big 12, so I would question how fast they'd want to have competition on theit turf. Before the Big East broke apart in relignment, USF and Cincy were legitimately threatening to break their in-state P5 competition's strongholds on their respective states. If USF and UCF got elevated, it would probably crater Miami's recruiting. I'm also fairly confident Houston and SMU would pass Texas Tech, Baylor, and TCU within 3 to 5 years.
