Why is it hard for some to understand that there is more to a subject than what meets the eye? People watch a 15 second video clip and they think they know the entire story. The rush to judgement is rampant.

I am reading posts on here where posters are basically saying the administration is lying about the difficulty they had putting together a schedule. I have read posts in the past saying administrators want to destroy JMU. Huh? This irrational thinking has me scratching my head often. They basically see the JMU administration as dishonest.

I know Cliff, Jeff and Charlie pretty well. My experience is they are all straight shooters. If you believe any of them are dishonest, then you don’t know them.

I couldn’t agree more.

Share with me one factual reason (not something you create in your mind) why signing a home and home contract with NSU was in the best interest of JMU. Take into account that the deal was a straight up swap of home games. I could find a reason for a two for one, but that deal was laughable.

From an outsiders view, I agree with you BP. Why sign that deal? I don’t factually know why. This might be a good example of what I was referring to. There is more to this deal than meets the eye.

Here is a guess as to why we sign this deal. If we play them once at JMU, we have to pay them to play us. If we give them a home and home, we don’t have to pay a guarantee. We get a game in an important recruiting market. A game in a market we lost when ODU left the CAA. The kids on our team from Tidewater get to play back home too.

We are going to play the occasional patsy. There were some things to be gained by playing that patsy. That being said, I hate playing patsies. There is no entertainment value to me as a season ticket holder.

As Hyper stated, a two for one could have been understood. Our peers had to be scratching their heads.

A 2 for 1 may have meant we pay NSU a guarantee. I don’t know the details of the negotiation. I do know that I did not attend the game at NSU and it wasn’t because the weather was bad. I had no interest in watching another 80-7 game.

Hyper was there but mostly to see the NSU band.

I can tell you why "I thought" it happened.

1) we get them to come to Harrisonburg for free
2) 757 is a hot bed for recruiting
3) we have many alumni in that part of the state

I believe 2 & 3 were stated by JMU at the time of the announcement.

That said - 03-drunk

80% of the time I agree with the administration, and can see why we are so successful.

Occasionally I really shake my head on things such as bidding on FCS games, basketball & baseball coaching hires & retention, as well as home & home with an FCS doormat.

I know Mickey was quite upset about 10-15 years ago when the current scheduler at JMU wanted JMU to play at an HBU - I recall it was someone like Bethune-Cookman, but Mickey said no way. (I'm not sure it was B-C, but it was an HBU outside of our area that seemed to make no sense)

Delaware has played DE State 9 times. All at home. It's obvious why they do not schedule home and home with their in state doormat.

JMU agreeing to home and home with NSU is almost like VT or NC St giving us a home and home as FCS, except we play them competitively, unlike NSU.

So, scratch that, this is the same as VT agreeing to a home and home with someone like VMI or the Ticks. May have been some financial or recruiting motivations, but its absurd. If NDSU can do 2-1 with the SLC champs, we can do better than this. They have the same challenges we do scheduling wise.

We shouldn’t have to pay any guarantee on a 2-1 with a team we usually pay for a buy-game. Don’t even think our one-game buy pay is that high. I suspect some of the leadership at the time the schedule was made had strong feelings about treating NSU as equals. New coach came in when it’s time to actually play the game. Maybe his options were playing @ NSU w/$100k more for assistants or buyout the away game & have it out of his budget. Easy to see how it might have gone down if that’s how it played out.

Also my favorite football team just so happened to be playing! Amos would have returned so many punts for TDs if we played this whole game...

What’s sad is the rain delays killed the Spartan Legion’s pregame and halftime shows. I left before they called the game.

And obviously I was not following that close, since I just realized today the team had been practicing prior to the positive test earlier in the week.

BUT - if we were already practicing, why did we not schedule 2-4 games? If your taking the risk already, then why not play some games in a non fan environment?

Once again - Dukeman is not allowed to respond to this post. 04-cheers

The DNR article about scheduling attempts is interesting to read on this topic. 27 teams were contacted, 9 of which were FBS UNC, UVA, Liberty, ODU, Marshall, Temple, ECU, Charlotte and the farthest being Army which is a 6 hour drive.

Which leads to the question, why weren’t the rest of the remaining FBS schools contacted? It seems someone waved a white flag before all avenues were exhausted. I agree that if you are already practicing then why not pursue games even if it is a partial season.

If Army was palatable for driving distance, Then why didn’t JMU contact NC State, Duke, Wake Forest, Clemson, West Virginia, Navy, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, App State, Virginia Tech etc
At least Go ahead and empty the tank before shutting down the engine.

We’ll see if the college football season can be completed and how long it lasts if it doesn’t, but it has started and JMU got to watch the FCS kickoff game along with everyone else last night.
Strange times

Might be semantics, but there's nothing that says others weren't contacted. I believe the 27 teams listed had mutual interest in playing JMU. I'm sure there were others contacted that had no interest and no further follow up happened.

If so, that means it came down to not being able to agree to terms with any of them?

I think the scheduling was fluid- could JMU have kept the UNC game- by all accounts yes- could they have secured others as time went on- maybe- I guess they just didn’t want to risk waiting for openings or commitments and didn’t think it was fair to the players and coaches to have everything in flux. Central Arkansas did pull together a nice schedule but I do think it was easier for them to do it based on the relative strength of the programs and their willingness to travel further. JMU has their reasons for pulling the plug and I respect that. You have to ask yourself what was the upside to hanging on if they weren’t going to get a good schedule- and also what is the upside for other programs to be willing to schedule JMU. We aren’t a guaranteed win no matter what level the opponent is and in some cases we may have been a likely or guaranteed loss in a season that doesn’t have many games. What was in for Ecu or App State or Marshall unless they were desperate for a game? Nothing.

The JMU administration had an opportunity to build relationships and negotiate exciting long term deals with like size universities.

These opportunities do not come along often.

There were many ways to be successful.

It was a total failure for JMU, and now our players are transferring to other schools, Charlotte took our game vs UNC, App State scheduled Marshall, etc etc

You had to be disappointed. I remember reading your posts and how much you were looking forward to seeing their band. Sorry it didn’t work out for you.
