Sept. 19 game a possibility for ECU, but not a sure thing

"80 FBS teams are playing college football this fall. A number of FCS programs are playing up to four non-conference games versus FBS or FCS teams"

Some athletic departments are working inexhaustibly to build relationships and negotiate scheduling deals

Other Athletic Departments are preparing and signing transfer documents so that star athletes can go to rival programs.

But isn’t UVA really just part of JMU’s program? Why else would UVA be painted on our arena floor?

The money always seems to rule the day. It is why football teams fly over 100s of universities to play someone else.

TV decided to ruin what was the student athlete by creating the Power 5 for its own selfish gain. TV decided it would kill traditional regional rivalries by ending games played for decades. The game is no longer about entertaining the fans. It is about making money and loyal P5 fans fund it all.

No one else stepped forward to pay for the naming rights so JMU took what they could get. The naming rights on the building was fairly inexpensive too. Again, it was all the free market could vet. It sucks to have UVA on our court but the money to pay the bills must come from somewhere.

I get it; Charlie wanted that money. And I don’t have any inside info on who else put in an offer. But pride in the school should count for something when considering which deal to sign. Take $50k less & allow your alums to not be completely embarrassed. It’s clear to me that wasn’t a consideration.

Is there anyone on the staff at JMU with experience negotiating large sponsorship deals?

No there isn’t which is why they pay a hefty fee to farm it out to Learfield.
You can debate the fee they pay Learfield or the results they get from Learfield, but not JMU’s corporate negotiations for athletic sponsorships. Simply put, they don’t take part.

Alright, I was one who did not have an issue with not playing games this fall and was almost a bit relieved because I was concerned about a serious case.

And obviously I was not following that close, since I just realized today the team had been practicing prior to the positive test earlier in the week.

BUT - if we were already practicing, why did we not schedule 2-4 games? If your taking the risk already, then why not play some games in a non fan environment?

Once again - Dukeman is not allowed to respond to this post. 04-cheers

I know they said getting any deals signed was difficult, but conceptually I agree. Would have liked to see 1-2 games like NDSU is targeting. I’m certain this will not impact spring or playoff eligibility, plus it helps keep the team focused and sharp.

Two possibilities would have been a multi-year deal like NDSU cut with an FCS school (SLC, big south, etc) or possibly a minimal money game against a G5/P5. Obviously no one is going to pay big bucks for an empty stadium game.

Most schools that are playing games are at 20% stadium capacity or less, and no tailgating, so they are working to minimize risks. ‘Bama has said 20%, no tailgating, and ECU is talking about potentially only 500 people in their 50k-ish stadium. They do seem to be going forward with games.

Is Learfield scheduling football games and monitoring conference realignment too? Maybe Learfield is behind the "we can't schedule because nobody will play" JMU propaganda? I don't buy that...

In all fairness, Learfield has many schools in their portfolio including many top flight athletic programs.

Not completely true. The director of the Duke Club was the COO of a Fortune 100 company. Prior to assuming his role as Director he was in charge of Revenue. In that role he restructured a number of existing contracts and agreements which needed to be updated. Let’s just say that JMU has never had anyone involved with athletics with Cliff Wood’s business and leadership experience. Cliff’s role may not be, exclusively, to work on those contracts but he is in a position to be involved on a go forward basis in those decisions.

I still find it funny that many on this board, as much as we all love JMU, never pass on an opportunity to take shots at JMU leadership. (Not necessarily referring to those posters quoted).

I think some people just naturally hate people who are decision makers or have authority. Why is it hard for some to understand that there is more to a subject than what meets the eye? People watch a 15 second video clip and they think they know the entire story. The rush to judgement is rampant.

I am reading posts on here where posters are basically saying the administration is lying about the difficulty they had putting together a schedule. I have read posts in the past saying administrators want to destroy JMU. Huh? This irrational thinking has me scratching my head often. They basically see the JMU administration as dishonest.

I know Cliff, Jeff and Charlie pretty well. My experience is they are all straight shooters. If you believe any of them are dishonest, then you don’t know them.

Share with me one factual reason (not something you create in your mind) why signing a home and home contract with NSU was in the best interest of JMU. Take into account that the deal was a straight up swap of home games. I could find a reason for a two for one, but that deal was laughable.

I’ve been a pretty big defender of the game @ NSU, but this is correct. A 2for1 accomplishes that just as well. And is definitely a stronger business decision.

I have no idea why they scheduled that deal? I have no idea the complexities that are involved in building any schedule at our level? I’d suggest that that the difference between you and me is that I trust that they made the best decision based on ALL the variables at that particular point in time. Does this mean that I think that every decision that has been, or will be, made is the right one? No, absolutely not. What it means is that I believe that our leadership has made the right call more often than not. I know that they bleed purple and have the best intentions of the university and its athletes in mind at every turn. Therefore, I trust them.

That's certainly possible but pending govt. orders/exceptions it is being speculated that ECU will likely allow 20-30% capacity with obvious safeguards in place.

From an outsiders view, I agree with you BP. Why sign that deal? I don’t factually know why. This might be a good example of what I was referring to. There is more to this deal than meets the eye.

Here is a guess as to why we sign this deal. If we play them once at JMU, we have to pay them to play us. If we give them a home and home, we don’t have to pay a guarantee. We get a game in an important recruiting market. A game in a market we lost when ODU left the CAA. The kids on our team from Tidewater get to play back home too.

We are going to play the occasional patsy. There were some things to be gained by playing that patsy. That being said, I hate playing patsies. There is no entertainment value to me as a season ticket holder.
