Or maybe just 'not fried out after years of meth' or 'functioning' well enough to have a better lawyer.
I'm not knocking the people, nor am I suggesting that 'the system' is the issue. I am merely suggesting that some people know how to, or can afford people who know how to stay out of trouble, and some don't. The big criminals are often incredibly smart people who could have done lots of things. When the left says 'the rich get away with it' they're often talking about the entitled frat boy who does coke vs the homeless guy doing crack... but it's also true (and in many ways, more true) of the gang leader/major drug dealer
When I watch COPS, some of those guys I want put away for a long time, but a lot of them seem just too messed up and fried out to get out of their own way. Some of that stuff is REALLY bad.... not just for the high it gives you, but what it does to your brain chemistry in the long term

I think it goes deeper than than what you wrongly label 'education". I think you are right on the money when you say "money". Now does an engineering degree make you smart? No. Does having money for good lawyers get you better results? Sure, just as having money for dentists makes you teeth better.
But I don't see how degrees and money either one teaches you to hide your gun in a glove box.
I would think it more likely one would take the advice of their street buddies on the best way to conceal a weapon.

It certainly isn't tied directly to education, or even to having a law degree. Remember the story I mentioned a couple of weeks ago about the ID forgery ring at Rice? (see https://csnbbs.com/thread-797972-post-16...6917342.). When one associate advised students not to voluntarily incriminate themselves, other associates at the table argued the opposite. Of the latter, the one who was most insistent that students should incriminate themselves was (somewhat unbelievably) also an attorney* who had a position at Rice teaching "critical thinking".
*According to the State Bar directory, it seems that "This attorney has been suspended by the State Bar of Texas for an administrative reason and is ineligible to practice law in Texas." Most likely, the administrative reason was simply failure to pay dues, as I believe the person stopped practicing law quite a while ago.

I'm actually saying the reverse in terms of cause/effect... but we really aren't saying different things...
An engineer can certainly get addicted to drugs... and because he's an engineer, he may be able to afford rehab to get clean or a good lawyer to keep him out of jail... potentially avoiding the worst effects of drugs.... but he most often becomes a successful engineer by staying out of jail and getting rehab, avoiding the worst effects of drugs. Chicken or egg.
I shouldn't have said anything about hiding a gun... but I did because it as poor example of what seems that by the time these people really hit rock bottom, their brains are too fried to even have common/street smarts to effectively hide a gun. I've seen very intelligent people become complete idiots because of drug addictions.

We will leave the gun out of it, then.
I think we are in agreement that people with money fare better legally AFTER the cops get involved. Probably due a lot to the DAs wanting to make deals.
it doesn't really matter the source of that money.

Seattle police chief
Another one bites the dust.
The dust raised by falling buildings, that is.
I think the Seattle city councilmen will find that nothing they will satisfy the mob.
