G5 decisons
If you are a g5 team and a p5 team does not play you this year do you isolate and only play your conference or just your region such as cusa east only play east and then play nearby team from another conference or do you maybe combine conferences.thoughts?

RE: G5 decisons
I think it depends on the conference:
MWC and MAC should probably stay in conference; the MWC should extend an olive branch to BYU and see if they want to play with them for the season, especially since some MWC schools might not be fielding teams due to travel restrictions in their states.
AAC, C-USA, and SBC could play G5 OOC games especially since there’s a lot of geographic overlap:
(Ex. ECU, Charlotte, and App St)

RE: G5 decisons
The American will almost certainly play conference only, excepting Army-Navy game.
MWC will probably go internal, although questions are huge surrounding the participation of Hawaii, New Mexico and the three California schools. Yes, an olive branch to BYU as one year favor each way makes sense.
I see no reason for CUSA, SBC or MAC to bother playing. FCS is already half shutdown and probably all of FCS will shut down. But why bother without money?

RE: G5 decisons
I think it would be in their best interest not to come out and say that they are only playing conference games. That way they have an argument to get the money game payouts. Once they say they are going conference games only then technically both sides cancelled the game. I wouldn't try to replace those games either to further show that they fully intended to play the money game. I would do everything in my power to put the burden on the other schools and conferences.

If you're the AAC, you're probably better off getting rid of non-conference games. It'll make their chances of getting the Access Bowl higher than it is.
IMO, the other leagues (at least the Sun Belt and CUSA) should consider un-scheduling whatever games aren't tied up for scheduling with ESPN to get non-conference games situated and then re-schedule those conference games around the non-conference games.

Here is the thing---buy games (either G5 vs P5 or G5 vs FCS) dont really make sense in a year when you can only seat 20-30% of your stadium. So, most replacement games are likely to be home and homes---if schools bother replacing them at all. Probably the best way to go is an extra game on the conference schedule plus whatever you can do on the OOC front to get to 10,11, or 12 games.

It seems the P5 have vacated most of the early national television slots to the G5. This could elevate the early media attention on the top G5 programs, and maybe create some new G5 match-ups attractive for ESPN. The AAC and Aresco should be in a good place to capitalize on these opportunities.

That's a good point. If I am a G5 commissioner, I am looking for ways to play games from August 29 through September 19, as that will likely provide my schools with higher than normal TV ratings, in the absence of many of the top P5 teams. Even bottom feeder Sun Belt vs MAC teams could draw a lot more eyeballs than usual.

Ive already stated on the AAC board my preference. I'd move to sign a one year deal to let BYU take the UConn #12 slot and play the normal 8 game schedule using 2 divisions. BYU would be in the West and Memphis or Navy could move east for 2020. Under that deal, BYU would be eligible for the AAC championship.
My second option would be to simply enter into a deal for 6 games with BYU and Army. BYU would play the 6 western schools and Army would play the 5 eastern schools. The games would just be OOC games---but they would represent fairly attractive inventory for ESPN and would probably represent needed scheduling help for Army and BYU in this current Covid mess.

Or in the places you can do so, you become the 1 in the 9+1 or 10+1.

Agreed. It's a great opportunity for the G5 to create some one off match-ups for TV.
From an App State perspective, it would make more sense to schedule local G5 OOC games and cut back on some conference games against the West division of the SBC. We could drop Texas State (away) and Arkansas State (home) from our conference slate to save travel money for everyone. Those are ESPN+ broadcasts so no real TV money lost there.

Apparently we moved up our game vs SMU to August 29th. Hope we can capitalize on the opportunity.

Why do you think the P5 have vacated early national TV slots? By adding more conference games to be played instead of G5 opponents, plus providing flexibility by adding bye weeks later in the season, they will surely claim the best slots in early September.

Mountain West presidents meet Wednesday to potentially determine a schedule.
ADs recommended options, including a 10-game conference only model as well as 8+2 & 9+1. The main takeaway: Unlike many other G5s, MWC is not expected to play more than 10 games, sources tell
