@RedboxBowl
will not be played this year. Game was scheduled to feature Big 10 vs. Pac-12, so now we’re down to 41 FBS bowls. Please adjust your schedules accordingly

Quote:The 18-year-old event matched the Pac-12 against the Big Ten at Levi’s Stadium. But last winter, the 49ers made the decision “to not renew the current agreement,” according to the franchise.

I think it's significant that this is a bowl matching two P5 conferences. If they see the handwriting on the wall, we can just imagine what bowls between G5 conferences, some of which are only marginally viable financially under normal conditions, must be thinking.

Right now, the ACC's plans for their Conference Championship game to be played on either 12/12 or 12/19, in order to allow for flexibility in the regular season schedule due to COVID. I doubt they will be alone planning this way. At this point, I wouldn't want to bet on much past the NY6 bowls holding out to the bitter end. I won't be surprised if the number of post-season games is between 0-10 at the end of the day.

Look at the other aspect of this. Since so many of the P5 conferences are going to conference only games, it means that only about half of the teams will be bowl eligible. Most of the P5 conferences have tie-ins for a majority of their teams. That means there will be a bunch of bowls stuck with no eligible teams from their tie-ins. I doubt that there would be enough eligible at large teams to dill those spots. Conference greed to snag bowl slots is coming home to roost.

Greed has a way of doing that.

Actually, the G5 bowls might be the least affected. The G5 bowls are largely owned by ESPN and are made for TV affairs. In other words, those games are more about attractive live football TV programming in December than they are about putting butts in seats (or attracting tourist for the local Chamber of Commerce). Attendance is much less of a financial imperative for those bowls to maintain their value to ESPN.

The 49ers were reportedly providing a lot of money for this game, and the organizers couldn't replace that with other sponsors. Obviously it's difficult to see how they could line up new sponsors for a bowl game scheduled for the end of a season that might not be completed.

Yes, and not only that, most G5 conferences don't have 10 bowl ties like some of the P5 do. As someone else noted, with just 10 games, all in conference, the SEC will surely not fill 3 or 4 of its 10 ties, even more if they get their usual 3 teams in to the NY6.

In contrast, conference like the MAC often have 6-6 bottom feeders left out of bowls because they don't have enough ties, so they will fill all their bowls.

Unless the NCAA grants a waiver to let 5-5 teams in, it is likely that many P5 bowls will go unfilled.

Few things in 2020 are certain. But if we are going to wish upon a star that a regular season is completed and bowl games are played, then if that wish comes true, I am certain that the NCAA will permit any team with a .500 record in 2020 to play in a bowl game this season.

The Redbox Bowl is not only non ESPN bowl owned but is also non ESPN televised bowl.

I think ESPN is going to wait it out a bit before their bowl games start getting canceled

There wont be any bowl games. No fans traveling, students dismissed at Thanksgiving and told to return mid-January or even February. Teams will be sent home as soon as the season ends at Thanksgiving or a bit later, only the CCG played maybe mid-December. Done over and out.

That assumes a season happens, as 13 States are now in the critical zone where they should lock down again, including Texas, Oklahoma, Florida and Georgia. Things have gotten worse not better with summer.

Bowl games don't matter. Season even if it starts won't make it to Dec. These conferences are scrambling to salvage a season that is as good as dead already.

@RedboxBowl
will not be played this year. Game was scheduled to feature Big 10 vs. Pac-12, so now we’re down to 41 FBS bowls. Please adjust your schedules accordingly

Is there a reason they haven't expanded to 65 bowls so that every team can make one? Don't say there's no demand but there's no demand for 41 as it is. Then we can remove fake OT and bring back ties too.

There's always Shreveport.

I would love to see Shreveport incorporated into the CFP rotation this season.

The FBS was designed so that the only true championship any school would play for was their conference championship. Bowls were intended to be exhibitions played for fun only - fun for the players and fun for the fans in attractive winter vacation destinations. Maybe it could be that way again this year. At least I hope so.

Not sure that will make much difference. With the P5 largely playing just internally---about 40% of these leagues will probably finish below .500. Frankly, I think we will be lucky to make it more than half way through the season---expectations that we will actually have a significant December bowl season is probably a bridge too far. I hope college football gets in an entire season with bowls---but its looking like a real long shot to me.
