UofM will start Fall remotely, then reassess in early Sept
Fall classes will start Aug. 17 with predominantly remote learning at the University of Memphis.

University leaders will then reassess in early September and evaluate the possibility for some on-site and hybrid courses in a voluntary return to campus if health data allows for a safe transition.

Conference only games is the latest in stupidity. Missouri can travel to Florida, but Florida International can't? Makes sense.

It's not just travel.
It's the standard COVID safety protocols that have been left to conferences to determine, since the NCAA acquiesced long ago. P5's will likely test 2 times per week. How often will FIU?
And it's about shortening the schedule, to allow for interruptions. The SEC is going with a 10 game schedule, and if they have to shutdown for a couple of weeks, that's much easier within the conference.
But most importantly it's the tv contracts. ESPN will still pay bigly for Mizzou-UF. They will want their money back for FIU only.

If they are starting virtually, there is no way, minus a vaccine, there will be on campus instruction this fall at the U of M.

Quote:“We need at least two to three weeks of good trend data to alter any plans on campus,” U of M president M. David Rudd said Tuesday, Aug. 4, in the Memphis-Shelby County Joint COVID-19 Task Force briefing with reporters.

“Ideally, if we have good trend data, we will return some small classes and instruction to campus, most likely in a hybrid model,” he said.

There are already people on campus.

Quote:The U of M campus has been operating at 35-40% capacity since students returned home in March, including in the residence halls, where hundreds of students who could not get home have continued to live.

The university has managed the density “very effectively,” Rudd said. “We have had no significant difficulty or outbreaks. And we will continue to manage that moving forward.”

The university will be open early in the fall term to students who have labs or classes that must be taught in person. The university also said last week it will allow students to move into dorms, although it has not said if it will have double occupancy.

If classes are not allowed to meet, how can teams meet?

Because they are 2 different things?
Teams will require regular testing, symptom checks, questionnaires of contacts, somewhat controlled environment, extraordinary cleaning, extraordinary safety precautions
Classes do not.
