Right now they are throwing out the book and re-working things. They will be thinking outside the box and considering alternatives.

It will be interesting, although I think the more immediate possible (probable?) change is playoff expansion to 8 teams. Whatever reasons different factions might have had previously to reject an 8-team playoff will go out the window with the hunt for revenue to make up for this lost 2020. No one is going to leave any revenue laying on the table from 2021 going forward.

Agreed. If ESPN puts a big pile of new money on the table for an 8-team playoff, the powers-that-be will figure out a way to pull the plug on the remaining CFP years and take the money. (ESPN is the only network that could make a new deal right away, because ESPN has the CFP tied up for several more years.)

I don't think ESPN wants further P5 realignment, because the experience of the last decade tells them that realignment just means ESPN has to pay more. If it happens they'll deal with it, but they are not going to incentivize it.

I think they're going to have to either designate the AAC a power conference or gut the top programs from the AAC into P5 conferences for a final realignment and separation. The latter seems less expensive.

RE: SEC goes 10 game, conference only
BYU wont be added to the B12. If the B12 even tries to have a 10th game it will be with an existing member a 2nd time. It's going to be hard for any of the conferences to actually play 10 games.

The only logical option for BYU is the MWC, where they are close to several mountain time zone schools, plus those in Nevada. I suspect the MWC will have to operate without Hawaii and New Mexico anyway due to State quarantine rules. But can they bring themselves to do it?

Those state quarantine rules likely sideline New Mexico State. They are in the most difficult position of any Independent.

Who knows about the rest? The American really doesn't need to help anyone. But perhaps they offer Army, knowing they can do what Navy does, and because they are on the expansion list.

UConn, UMass and Liberty would have to beg C-USA or the MAC. I suppose those three and Army could play a rump of a schedule, each other twice. That's enough to keep the doors open.

BYU's pride wont let them go back to the MWC, even just for temporary shelter.
I agree with your point on the AAC not needing to help anyone, I would hope our commissioner is hard selling BYU on AAC membership right now.

They wouldn't.........but it will make a lot of fans angry enough to pave the way for some of those four pairs of teams to make a conference switch in the next few years.

I believe you might see the possibility of Kentucky and South Carolina headed to the ACC while Florida State and Georgia Tech being added to the SEC.
Bullet is correct in that this season will usher in the possibility for a new wave of realignment.

Ugh. Don't call them "Southern Cal". Don't imply they are connected to Cal in any way. 07-coffee3

May I suggest "USuCk" or "University of Spoiled Children".

Blame the PAC and Big 10 and then the ACC. The PAC set the tone and the Big 10 followed. When the ACC went to 10 the SEC had no choice but to do the same. The leadership you need to blame is that of ESPN and the ACC.

But look at it like the social experiment it is. If 5 home SEC games doesn't draw as well or better than what you had scheduled with 2 buy games what have you lost?

Also Gamecock if it isn't worth having the Season if you don't play Clemson then you don't really belong in the SEC. I would think by now that games with Tennessee, Florida and Georgia should be worth a season.

FWIW, apparently South Carolina was the single dissenting vote in the SEC's conference only decisions.

Georgia Tech too. Odds are there won't be much of a season at all anyway, though.

But Georgia's scheduled to host in 2020. It doesn't mean as much if fans aren't allowed in the stands or there is limited capacity but it also affects television rights. Now in the case of Georgia, if they replace Georgia Tech with LSU they'd probably get better TV ratings and more money (Georgia was already scheduled to play Alabama in 2020 but in Tuscaloosa). Then again, if Georgia replaces the home game with Georgia Tech with a home game with one of the Mississippi schools, they will probably lose money.

In the case of Florida State, they are replacing Florida with two additional ACC opponents. Florida State will play at Notre Dame in 2020 which I'm pretty sure they weren't originally scheduled to do this season. Replacing Florida with Notre Dame might improve the TV ratings/money for FSU (not sure since Florida is their biggest rival). But if that game airs on NBC and all the money goes to Notre Dame, Florida State gets screwed. Florida State will play Clemson, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Pitt, and Virginia at home. Clemson and Virginia are divisional opponents that they would have played at home in 2020 had it been a normal season. If I'm a Florida State fan, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, and Pitt all seem like pretty big downgrades compared to Florida.

Nobody gets screwed. That game will air on NBC.

The TV money in 2020 will all be pooled and shared by all 15 ACC schools, the NBC money included.

There wont be any fans in the stands. It's not going to get past the health officials. Even in the South, MLB, MLS and the NFL wont be allowed fans, so what makes you think an exception has a chance in hell for CFB?

Well if they do what they always do they'll just take the 4 teams with solid records who have the largest national audience numbers. It is after all the baby of ESPN.

What?
The ACC went to 10+1.
Then the SEC went to 10 games and left Georgia Tech, Florida State, Louisville and Clemson hanging with no rivalry game.
That blame falls squarely on the SEC.

Why does the opponent matter for TV games? The schools get the same amount no matter who they play. Now, there may be adjustments this year due to a decrease in games, but that’s a given.
