Is he implying something about Norfolk and ODU campus or was this just a general statement?

It would be very on-brand for someone uva related to take a shot at ODU or Norfolk at any point but Mendenhall does seem legit concerned about COVID in general and if football will be played in the fall.

For UVA deciding between an at home vs VMI and on the road @ ODU, the choice is pretty obvious. And I'm not holding my breath that UVA will reschedule that game, as I'm just going to assume they'll use any means necessary to weasel out of that game.

RE: We may play UVA!
If they want a home game I'd think they'd ask us to switch our home dates first. They'd have to buy us out of the game then pay an FCS team to come there which would cost probably around $1M. It might be good for us anyway to have them at home in a year where we can pack the stadium and use it to drive season tix sales.

Thats what Im thinking too. But what appears to be happening is UVA is trying to exploit the virus to not play in Norfolk, and not buy us out. I don't think Wood wants to play this year anyway, so a buyout would be fine with me. But if we play they should either keep their word, buy out the game, or switch the order of the home and home. If we cancel our season, and UVA plays then I guess the Hoos are off the hook and they get a freebie. But if we both play, then UVA owes us.

If it's a lost cause to get them to come here- it would be a pretty badass move on Rahne's part to say- fine, we'll come there. Either way, you are playing us.

Could we switch the schedule and play there this year and they play here next?

We suddenly have two, if not three open dates on the schedule so why not. We could swap the 2020 and 2022 games and call it a day. Of course, that would make it very easy for them to weasel out of the game in Norfolk.

They're already trying to weasel out. So whats the difference?

I don't see how we, or any G5 schools for that matter, play this year if there are no fans in the stands. How can you absorb the cost of playing the season out if there is no way to make any money. We are already hearing about the huge cuts that will need to be made to make up the budget shortfall and playing a football season with no fans adds significantly to the operating cost. I think once this all shakes out no TV money = No football season. So you will see P5 conferences try to play, and most G5 programs will sit it out.

Indeed, and any future games as well.

Looking at last year, and the trend of the team over the past 3 seasons, any ODU game was a win/win for UVA. An easy almost guaranteed victory for them without having to drop to an FCS opponent.

Things have changed now.
Looking at recruiting, our future is bright indeed. Even for 2020, our returning players coupled with the new FBS level coaching staff, and a passing game hopefully much improved with Wolff, we should be better, maybe significantly better than last year, especially in the passing game.

Lat year we gave UVA all they wanted until they realized that we could not pass (as did every opponent after that).
Unfortunately, if we can keep Rahne for even just a few years, UVA football likely will treat us like VT basketball has; not worth the possible humiliation.

This has been my line of thought as well. Schools with oversized stadiums might be OK. If you average 15-25K and play your home games in the Sun Bowl or Legion field you can probably make it work. Us on the other hand would be facing some serious deficits where it'd make more sense to not play at all. The P5 will try in order to salvage the TV contracts but I doubt they'll be able to finish the season.

RE: We may play UVA!
I'm not that terribly worried about UVa. not coming to ODU. There's a reason VT scheduled a long term home-and-home and why UNC, N.C. State and (at least until now) Wake have made the trip. They see a benefit in being in Norfolk for recruiting. This year that's not an issue because there's no high school football in the fall and there would be few if any fans permitted, but it's not like Tidewater is going to cease being a football talent hotbed. I fully expect UVa. to make good on @ODU, not for ODU's benefit, but for UVa.'s.

VT likely benefits greatly from 757 exposure.

However, because of UVA's academic requirements, I do not believe they would benefit nearly as much from an every-other-year presence here. Recruiting targets are preselected based on various criteria including academics.
Additionally, those individuals know who they are and already know who UVA is. They are more likely to be interested in the likes of a Stanford, or a Notre Dame, etc, so your selling with a different set of talking points.

I agree that UVa. goes after different kids than VT, but both are well known to their targets and both enjoy the benefits of flying the flag in Tidewater. It's been a burr in the Cavs' saddle that they would get outrecruited here not only by VT, but sometimes UNC and ECU. If anything, Norfolk exposure might be more important to them since VT has long been the bell cow for 757 recruiting.

That said, I do think they'll look for the easiest game to be their OOC plus-one this season. I suspect it won't be VMI because I'd be shocked if FCS played in the fall, given how many conferences have already punted on fall ball (the NEC today became the most recent). It's in the NCAA's best interests to postpone the FCS playoffs to the spring, and if they do, everyone's moving their schedules. Who knows, maybe this is the proving ground for a permanent FCS season move.

They can’t play non-conference out of their own state.

I wasn't clear. Not exactly thinking about now, but for future scheduling. Beatty is working this area hard. Seems like a game here would make sense for them.

But would Pitt help us drive ticket sales? I have doubts they’d help much.

I would think any ACC school would drive ticket sales. Obviously not like VT or UVA, but everything else being equal would think Pitt would draw more interest than Wake Forest and certainly more than anyone in CUSA. Best way to drive sales is winning. When we were winning we sold out all of our games. We didn't develop a big problem until we started sucking. Having Pitt at home probably wouldn't sell out if we suck. Only UVA or VT would do that. Maybe ECU or JMU.

Agreed on winning. And you’re right that only a few programs would have a big impact on season tickets. But I also don’t see the drive in landing a home and home with Pitt when we have so many similar or better programs to pick from that are much closer. Give me UVa, VT, Maryland, Duke, NCSU, Navy, ECU or Wake before going that route.

I'm good with all those. Not even saying we need to make Pitt happen, just that I'd be fine with them as well.

I know we're ACC country but I'd like to see an SEC team or two make their way to Norfolk at some point. Probably not Alabama/LSU/Florida, but maybe South Carolina or Kentucky or one of the Mississippi schools.
