German Study Suggests That Trained Dogs Can Sniff Out Covid19 Infections
You've probably seen or read about dogs trained to sniff out and detect those with cancer. Now, the early results of a study suggest they can also detect which people are dealing with a covid-19 infection.

A preliminary study in Germany found that dogs are capable of discerning people infected with COVID-19.
Although more research is needed, a study by the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover discovered that eight detection dogs that were trained for a week to detect saliva of a COVID-19 patient were able to identify between the samples of infected and non-infected individuals.
"During the presentation of 1012 randomized samples, the dogs achieved an overall average detection rate of 94 percent," said the study.
Researchers hope the trained detection dogs will be able to " identify respiratory secretion samples from hospitalized and clinically diseased SARS-CoV-2 infected individuals."

"Dogs have a sense of smell that is 1,000 times better than humans, so their potential within the medical field is huge," said Volk.
Future research will include "the ability of dogs to identify the different COVID-19 disease phenotypes and phases of disease expression, such as asymptomatic, pre-symptomatic, mild and severe clinical cases," said the study.
