Lou Henson passes away - age 88
Obviously not NIU but relevant to the college sports landscape in Illinois.

Took New Mexico St and Illinois to the Final Four.

He was still attending NMSU games near the very end - helping the staff - FIFTY years after he started coaching there.

A lot of strange stuff going on at Illinois when Henson was head coach.
When you win, everybody forgets the shoe boxes or bags being passed out. The end justified the means at Illinois with Henson.
RIP

Illinois got attention because they won. The stuff they pulled was very minor. I hardly put Lou Henson in the realm of cheaters and dirty program. Notice how programs welcomed him back and he was never forced out of a position for activities outside of basketball. And anything Bruce Pearl says should be taken with a grain of salt seeing his fine track record.

Something I found interesting....
In 1997, Henson returned to New Mexico State as interim head coach after Neil McCarthy was abruptly fired before the start of the season. Henson wanted to donate his time, but was told that state law didn't allow him to coach for free. He finally accepted a nominal salary of $1 per month. After a successful season, he was given his old job back on a permanent basis.

Henson in a recruiting visit: "Hey son, if you come play for me, you can work for the Illinois Tollway during your summer vacation".

"Work."

If you were on campus in Champaign during that time, the Blazers were no secret across football and basketball.

Years ago I worked with the sister of Efrem Winters. She told me that she got a job out of the deal.

Then again, they say it takes one to know one.
As a fan of Randy Fens myself, I'm also familiar with too many people who knew Kenny and also knew about the car he got.

from what I heard and know there was more than a car involved! There was stuff going on at NIU when Willie White was an assistant but not to that degree

It was common knowledge among high school basketball coaches that
Lowell Hamilton received a variety of incentives to attend Illinois. Illinois recruiting style in the 1980s was to make sure they were the last one for the official site visit. Bobby Knight thought he had Hamilton all locked up until Hamilton made his last official visit to Illinois. Hamilton committed to Illinois the next day after his site visit.

I saw it. Not kidding. Blazer "Snake 33" or "33 Snake" I forgot which one. It was leased. And of course, lease he didn't pay for.

I didn't say he was a saint, but people are naive. It's not like the movie Blue Chips. I mean look at Tua Tagovailoa. Guy's dad moved his whole family to AL, just happened to find a job. Out in the open. And in the ERA he coached in you had Kentucky in BB and SMU in football. They were out for blood.I mean if I remember shoes were seen as evil as well as buying a kid to a plane ticket to see his dying mother or funeral, I forgot which. So I'd think if they wanted to nail Illinois, people like Collins and the phone tapping, they could have found more than a year.

I'll never forget watching a news report back in the 90s when UofI got pinched for having football players "intern" at cars dealers in the summer. Many players on the team got orange Broncos. As the reporter talks about the team denying allegations, they quickly pan past a few players and in the background are orange Broncos.
