Extraordinarily easy to say that when you aren't anywhere near the war zone. Better for you to stay in the Arizona sticks.

And yet they have won two World Series in their franchise history (under 30 years). Go figure.

Would love for Montreal to get a franchise back (or another Canadian franchise). You have to imagine Las Vegas will be on the fast track too. I don't think MLB is at the point where it can expand (not enough talent, IMO, to go around); however, with expanded playoffs (and the possibility of that becoming a regular thing), who knows?

Vegas might push for a franchise, but another place hungry for a pro team is San Antonio.

Hoping 30 for 30 does a piece on the '94 Expos, especially with all of the all-star players that played elsewhere afterwards. Would be a great story to see.

on a similar note- what is the over/under on the number of 30 for 30's based on 2020?

Hard to see MLB working in Vegas and definitely San Antonio. It's just too hot during the summer. I know there are domes and Arizona/Texas/Houston make it work but it's tough.

That's what night games are for. Up through the late 1990s, Texas almost never played a day game outside of April, early May and September. Including on Sunday nights.

Texas got away from that, mostly because of ESPN's Sunday Night exclusivity clause. But we could make an exception for 2020, I'd think.

The Rays, while competitive, have an out-of-date stadium (Marlins have a brand new one), with limited resources (the Marlins have at least spent at various points, and won) and a city that refuses to let them out of their lease (or allow them to build a new stadium).

St. Pete issued an RFP for bids to re-develop the Trop site earlier this week. They seem to be ready to let the Rays leave.

I hate to see it, because the Rays are such a better franchise than the Marlins. But if they move elsewhere, hopefully it'll be somewhere they get the fan support they deserve. Montreal, Portland, Vancouver, wherever...all will be a big upgrade on the support they get locally in Tampa-St. Pete.

The Marlins are in one of the biggest markets in the country and don't draw flies unless they are in the playoffs (which they have been just twice in 27 years). It's deader than a Rice game or a Tulane game in the Super Dome.

What kills the Rays are two things:

1) Stadium location: Most Tampa fans live in the city of Tampa, while the Rays' stadium is in downtown St. Pete. As the crow flies, that's not a bad distance, but the actual drive is a bit of a haul. Had the stadium been built in Tampa, you'd see numbers more like the Bucs get (still not great, but better for a baseball team).

2) The New York, Boston, & Chicago fan populations in Pinellas County. These fanbases aren't exactly small in any city, but the amount of these fans is especially obvious in Pinellas, where most either move to retire, or for jobs in & around Tampa. My loathing for Boston teams lies in the number of zealous Boston fans I went to school & events with growing up, & these three fanbases take over any games that their teams show up to. Add to it that Tampa is in the same division as Boston & New York, & of course they're not going to show up to other games to support a team that could hurt their own. Add to it that many local kids like myself move out of the area for work & school, & suddenly you can't sustain a long-term fanbase while others overcrowd the area.

It sucks to watch the conversation become a matter of when, not if, they will move, but I totally get why they want to go elsewhere. I was born just a few roads from the stadium, so I will be sad to see them go whenever that time comes. For now, I enjoy the team from a distance & try to catch a game when I'm in town during the season.

It's 100 degrees at 8pm in Vegas. They would need a dome.

Portland would need a retractable roof. It rains 70-75% of days from April through mid-June. But the end of June through September is perfect ballpark weather!

Portland would need a fire proof building with escorts to and from your parking site.

You guys act like Portland is Mogadishu. In fact, it's just a few blocks that are subject to protests and damage. Indeed, it's far less widespread there than in some other cities like LA, which is why the Feds went there to be more easily able to target protestors.

Let's keep this political **** out of the thread though. MLB is not going to be deterred in moving a team to Portland because of some protests going on right now.

They bought two World Series teams and then had massive fire sales right thereafter because no one in Miami cares. Otherwise, they have never made the playoffs. They've had 6 winning seasons in 27 years. It's a horrible franchise, and Derek Jeter is just making them worse.

And this is why baseball will ultimately fail.

Stop watching Fox News. Portland is still safer than most cities. The protests are limited to a VERY small (like 6 block) area in downtown.

If you like craft beer, excellent coffee, a stupendous combination of urban manmade environment and natural beauty, top-notch cultural attractions (art museum, zoo, etc.), a non-mainstream music scene (jazz, classical, alternative rock, ambient, world, etc.), mass transit, cool restaurants and bars, and quirky urban neighborhoods, you'll love Portland.

If, on the other hand, your lifestyle and hobbies/interests lean toward the more mainstream, suburban/small town and "normal," you will not.

Nothing wrong with either preference.

Maybe vs Chicago it is.

In the murder rate list, Chicago isn't in the top ten, and isn't even the murder capital of Illinois ... the only state with two in the top ten is Louisiana, and at least five cities with a higher murder rate than Chicago have MLB clubs, so it's not like crime statistics play a big role in where MLB clubs locate.

This is just grist for the spin room posing as sports discussion ... if the Mariners are a small market club, Portland is not feasible, and that's all there is to it, but it's a relatively safe city.

Yeah, I would wonder if with Seattle out there, could you have another small club like Portland without it impacting the other coastal teams.

I would think there was room for another team in the mid-south, like Memphis or Nashville, or somewhere else, like Charlotte.

The Braves would love to have a greater percentage of Florida back in their territory - I could see that being a condition for allowing the Rays to move to Nashville or Charlotte. They night be more willing to let Nashville go since it ultimately hurts the Reds and Cardinals as well, while Charlotte would really impact only the Braves.

It also would be a perfect excuse to implement minor league armageddon by "promoting" Nashville and either Portland or Montreal. The AAA team in Nashville displaces a AA team, and then two more AA teams get created.

MLB: add Nashville, Portland
AAA: Nashville > Birmingham; new AAA teams in Jacksonville, FL and Saint Paul, MN
AA: Jacksonville > Bowling Green, KY; Birmingham -> Columbia, SC; new AA teams in Lakewood, NJ and Eastlake, Ohio

For A ball I'd just let musical chairs commence. The Midwest League is down two (Bowling Green and Lake County), as is the South Atlantic League (Lakewood and Columbia) before any real cuts are made. Hillsboro may have to move being in Portland's shadow.

It's hard to imagine an MLB franchise in Portland when the city can't even support AAA or AA ball and the local short-season Class A team plays its games 15 miles out of town in Hillsboro.
