The UGLY Politics of North Carolina School Reopening
So our "brilliant" governor decided a couple of weeks ago that it's not safe to send kids back to school on a normal schedule (with social distancing and other measures to protect). So basically they can go back on a 1/3 in-person schedule or 100% online.
That same "brilliant" governor is allowing the UNC System to reopen, the catch, most schools in the system are forcing kids back on campus to attend 1 or 2 in-person classes the fall semester, the remaining will be online. So I'm paying for my son to live in the dorm + meal plan $4,000+. Since his school opted to convert the semester into quarters, he'll have 1 in person class each quarter meeting 3 hours/week and basically sit in the dorm the rest of the time. I guess there are two reasons for a ridiculous schedule like this. First they can't force student athletes back to campus (in hopes of preserving fall football) if all students aren't required to return. Second without tuition and housing revenues (non-refundable even if on-campus is closed) the University System can't afford to pay faculty and staff.
Conclusion since the funding is in place for (primary/middle/secondary schools) facutly/staff to be paid no reason to re-open on-line learning is effective enough to justify keeping schools closed. The UNC System, most of which offer a full on-line degree option, must re-open to effectively educate, and more importantly get the normal revenue stream to pay all faculty and staff.

What else did you expect from King Coopa? McCrory got tossed out over dudes peeing in the women's bathroom, but Coopa can shut the state down and probably will get reelected. Half the electorate are Grade A Morons.

McCrory earned his loss by picking a battle that he didn't need to pick. He angered his own city by losing them All-Star weekend. Add to that a botched process in passing a Voter ID law.

I have yet to see any major company adopt unisex bathrooms. The common sense law may not be on the books but not many LBGQTWXYZ are using bathrooms that do not match their biological sex.

That's why the fight was unnecessary. The Republicans went out to tilt at windmills that day.

Sure. Trying to keep NC from becoming the next VA shitehole is tilting a windmills.

Nah, it was an election year and they wanted to find an issue that would win over those Moms of America (NC edition) and the anticipated a slam dunk. They won that vote but, paraphrasing the words of Plutarch for this situation, if they were victorious in one more battle like that, they would be utterly ruined.

It's been hard for a Republican to win NC Governorship for decades. There have been good GOP candidates but if they're tied to Charlotte, the Triad and Triangle unite against them fearing Charlotte Metro would be favored over the small cities.

This is true. But, wouldn’t it be wise not to be stupid when you finally get one in?

Some people say it wasn't the bathroom issue that brought McCrory down, but the I-77 toll lanes that turned off Charlotte voters. IDK, but dems were going to throw everything at him regardless since he was vulnerable on several fronts.
