KBR: UAT to cut school budget by FIVE percent
Kind of blazer related: The UAT university budget is being cut by 5%. At UAT due to a ten percent drop of out of state students. Per T-town news

Not actually related to UAB budget but may give an indication of what could happen here. Good news is that UAB is not as dependent on out of state students. Bad news UAB's cash cow is the SOM which IMHO will be hit harder.(capital projects and deficit coverage) Very bad news Hospital has already had revenue fall much more than that per snews (very little impact on UAB undergrad)

A big chunk of hospital revenue is related to elective surgery, which has been shut down for much of the year.

The hospital has made up the deficit, partly with federal aid, and is busier now than it was this time last year. Cut salaries are restored. As long as we don’t have to close elective surgeries down again, it will be fine. Watch out for UAT trying raid us. The football/ out of state student economic model is a house of cards this year.

Given that they've turned the ER waiting room into a COVID ward and are working down the steps of the surge plan, it's not exactly like we should be counting on this

What exactly does this mean? UAB money doesn't go to UA. I'm pretty sure that would be a federal crime

I would hope the Feds would help UAB out. Whether you agree with everything they say or not, UAB medical representatives and employees have been working their asses off this entire ordeal. The burden of practically running this state's response has fallen to UAB and compared to some other states like Georgia and Florida, I think we've done ok.

I think UAB may come out of this pandemic with a greatly enhanced national reputation. We're even one of the institutions predicted to thrive in the covid altered landscape of higher ed (only one of two in CUSA, the other being Rice).

From the system website:

“What We Do
The Office of Finance and Administration manages the administrative functions of the University of Alabama System Office including financial operations, information technology, and human resources. In addition, the Office administers System-wide investment activities and treasury cash management, including the pooled endowment fund and operating cash reserves, assisted by an Investment Advisor.”

Do you think every dollar stays in one place?

Yes and they also help pool and administer bond issues. But that does not mean that the financial records on the campuses and at the system offices are tampered with. Do you think UAB internal audit and state auditors and FEDERAL auditors and Big FOUR outside accounting funds and the finance officers at UAB, and medical governance board, or just idiots, or willing to risk their careers and families livelihood and be willing to commit fraud in order to help UAT.

I see what you're saying but do really think the UABOT will sit still while the Tuscaloosa campus is in crisis but the Birmingham campus is thriving? That hasn't been my experience in many decades of observing the system. If the bot does want to "reallocate" operating cash reserves, it will be one of the Big 4 assisting them to do so. That's how they roll, very well connected. All will be perfectly legal and aboveboard of course.

If they cancel elective procedures again the last thing you'll have to worry about is sports. That was so painful financially that hospitals won't do it unless it's a last resort and I mean like more than half the beds are covid

a) they can't just "reallocate" any cash reserves between campuses. I don't care how powerful Fess thinks he is, but PricewaterhouseCoopers isn't going to bet the farm on something that illegal. This is a common meme around here but UA can not and does not siphon money out of Birmingham. I mean, they do to the extent that they chargeback the campuses what I would say is an excessive amount to pay for the new overly extravagant System Office building and the ever growing number of Vice Chancellors, but that pain is being shared equally by UA, UAB, and UAH. They aren't raiding the School of Medicine to pay for new Greek housing in Tuscaloosa, no matter how much you want to think it's so

b) I'm not sure why you think UAB will be "thriving", I don't work there anymore so I don't know what's going on internally but I'm pretty sure the current environment is stressing UAB (even minus the hospital, which is a separate entity from the University)

NYU professor Scott Galloway predicts hundreds of universities will shutter, possibly for good, if they reopen in the fall

His dataset and formula says UAB will “Thrive” while UAT will “Survive”

RE: KBR: UAT to cut school budget by FIVE percent
A few observations about the chart. I hope I read it right.

The following schools weren't listed
USM
marshall
WKU
MTSU
Troy
USA
I may have missed them, but I wonder how they fall out

Surprisingly the schools from our conference that were listed did fairly well.
ODU struggle
LT-survive
UNT-Survive

Perhaps most interesting they had UAH perishing. In the event that happens what happens to any aerospace engineering contracts, facilities and endowments. After they pay debts involved with UAH, does anything that is left over revert back to UA System/Trustees. If so, does this insure UAH dies so Trustees can access the schools remaining assets? I know, I sound like a crazy conspiracy theorist, but as we have learned from the Trustees they are capable of anything

Why should I rely on his algorithm on deciding who is going to thrive and who is going to shut down? I don't think UAB is going to shut down but I don't think this situation is going to be *good* for the university. I also doubt that all of the universities on his list will shut down. It's a cute exercise, but it's just a guess and a shot in the dark for all but the state schools, or those with massive endowments

Agreed none of this is guaranteed. I still like the idea of identifying conference partners that may not be ready to make the commitments that we can finally make
