I would think this season would be an audition for Danny.

Makes sense, didn't know if there is a guy in waiting I'm overlooking? Maybe that guy IS Manning? Wouldn't mind seeing Maryland have some success again.

RE: Open Thread - Big 10 News Plus.
Quote:Maryland Sports Properties, a Playfly Sports property, announced Wednesday the signing of a multi-year partnership with PointsBet USA. The agreement is the first sports betting partnership within the Big Ten Conference and will feature fan-facing in-game and campus activations in and around Maryland's XFINITY Center and Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium, in addition to strategic responsible and problem gambling education to Maryland staff, students, and fans. The partnership will also include a philanthropic component, which will be announced at a later date.

PointsBet is recognized as a market leader for its responsible gambling efforts, and the partnership with Maryland Athletics will emphasize and create awareness around responsible gambling and sports betting education. In 2020, PointsBet made history becoming the first-ever sports betting operator to partner alongside an NCAA Power 5 athletic department with the University of Colorado Buffaloes.

"Investing in the University of Maryland athletics program expands our ability to impact local communities and the greater DMV region while also connecting PointsBet with alumni that remain actively involved in reverence to their alma mater," said PointsBet USA CEO Johnny Aitken. "Sports betting education and safe gambling is key to our long-term strategy, as is making a tangible impact on the communities we invest in. We are proud to work with such a high-profile, storied university to further these objectives."

"With the announcement of our partnership with PointsBet through Maryland Sports Properties and Playfly Sports, we are looking forward to raising awareness and educating our student-athlete and University community about responsible gambling," said Maryland Executive Associate Athletic Director and Chief Strategy Officer Brian Ullmann. "Maryland Athletics continues to lead boldly with the first deal of its kind in the Big Ten Conference and in the region."

The partnership between Maryland and PointsBet is the latest gaming sponsorship deal for Playfly Sports in a string of similar deals being activated for the 2021-22 academic year. In addition to in-arena activations and commercial assets, PointsBet will be featured across Maryland's digital channels and sports radio network broadcasts.

"Playfly Sports is a proud partner of Maryland Athletics and we are constantly seeking innovative opportunities to engage new sponsors," said Craig Sloan, COO at Playfly Sports Properties. "Maryland's relationship with PointsBet will elevate both brands, while strategically enhancing the rooting experience for fans, alumni and local communities."

RE: Open Thread - Big 10 News Plus.
A look back at the very beginning of BTN.

Quote:Skipper then noted that the first TV deal he worked on was with the Big Ten. The conference pushed back for a large increase in rights fees, which caused ESPN to balk. That caused then-Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany to begin the process of what would become the Big Ten Network, something that Skipper seems to regret letting happen.

Quote:The first conference deal I worked on was the Big Ten, which came up in 2005,” said Skipper. “We were competing with FOX. We did a 10-year, $1 billion deal. That was the first billion-dollar deal in college sports for the rights to most of the Big Ten’s games. They kept some games for the Big Ten Network. We should never have let the Big Ten Network happen at ESPN. Wasn’t good for our business that those games leaked out of the system, but Jim Delany had the smart idea to launch a network with FOX and that also was good business, even though it had a rough start.”

A lot of chatter about Jim Harbaugh and the NFL. I'm not posting links, but it's pretty much everywhere right now. Any truth?

RE: Open Thread - Big 10 News Plus.
This could be a bigger deal than thought:

https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/SB...02/14.aspx

Quote:Sources: Look for Big Ten to let ESPN’s exclusive window end without a deal
ESPN has entered an exclusive negotiating window with the Big Ten to renew its rights deal. Multiple sources expect the conference to allow ESPN’s exclusive window to end so that it can take its rights to the open market. It’s not clear exactly when the exclusive window ends, but sources expect the Big Ten to secure new TV deals before the fall semester.

The reason: several other networks have expressed their interest in taking the Big Ten’s rights from ESPN. Interest from CBS, Fox and NBC virtually ensures that the conference will see a hefty increase from the $440 million that ESPN and Fox pay each year. It’s the same premise as buying a house -- prices go up when you have multiple bidders.

Just because the Big Ten is almost certain to let its exclusive window with ESPN end without a deal doesn’t mean that the conference will leave Bristol. ESPN expects to make a big push to keep conference rights to football and men’s basketball games.

Fox, which owns about half of Big Ten Network, has made it known that it wants to wind up with a bigger deal. Thanks primarily to its Big Ten deal, Fox’s noon Saturday window was the most viewed in college football this past season.

CBS and NBC also will be aggressive in trying to get Big Ten rights. By aggressive, I mean that it looks like they will come to the conference with lots of cash. CBS wants high-quality college football games to replace the SEC, which is leaving CBS after the 2023 season, and NBC is salivating over the prospects of fall Saturday doubleheaders with Notre Dame games leading into Big Ten ones.

It would be incredibly ironic if Notre Dame games could be used to bolster the ratings of Big Ten games later in the day.

Great news for RU! He's building something there and plenty of recruits to grab in New Jersey.

Interesting! I really don't know how I feel about their approach? Seems a little unstable, for lack of a better word.

Sounds like they are trying to stick by their principles in an unprincipled world. I wish them well, but I'm not optimistic.

I'm a fan of the Badgers, even as they refused to pay higher salaries and attract top-tier coaches. Now this approach, Yikes! You're right, they do stick to their principles and are always behind to the times by about 5 to 10 years. Committed to their way simply translates to being stubborn, at least that's how I take it?

Amazing they are a very solid program with their pride in the way. Who am I to judge, they're doing something right and you always know what you're getting with them.

"The"

Kind of silly and arrogant if you ask me. I still love the school, though; even during their boneheaded actions!
