UAB Will COVID-19 Test EVERY Returning College Student in Alabama
https://twitter.com/JoeGoodmanJr/status/...6654205953

Dennis Dodd@dennisdoddcbs

Via $30 mil in state money, UAB is proceeding with testing every returning college student in the state of Ala -- 300,000 in all. Amazing thing, UAB medical types won't wait til beginning of school to test. Students will be asked to go to testing center or be sent a kit at home.

Joseph Goodman@JoeGoodmanJr
Adding to this, there will be 15 testing centers throughout the state. Students will be sent to facilities near their homes and not near their universities. Been told state will test about 10K students a day.

The sh*t will hit the fan when they force vaccinations. Zero reason to get tested if you have no symptoms or no one vulnerable at home. Otherwise, it’s a cash grab. Just like hospitalizing folks with antibodies and zero symptoms just so you can say your in-house patient numbers are up and you get the $5k extra dollars.

They already force vaccinations to attend college in Alabama https://www.uab.edu/students/health/medi...ns/level-1

Unless they're going to test these people every other day all semester, this isn't going to help at all. Especially with home testing kits, they'll just swab their dog's nose just to spite

The problem is that this will make a bunch of people think it's "safe" to come back when it's not, and it's going to waste $30m in the process. If it was doing something that was harmless, then okay, but this is actively bad IMO

As the parent of a returning UAB AND a returned UA student I welcome this. My sons wear masks and are very conscious of what's going on. There are others they do not take this thing seriously. Consider this: if they test 300,000 students and get a positive rate of 10% that's 30,000 folks who could be restricted in their activities such that they could not as easily infect others. With the exponential rate of infections that would be a tremendous help. Even if some idiots fake the tests this is still a major step in slowing this thing down. Even if 5,000 or 10,000 students could be identified we are much further along than otherwise. Having a single source also has its benefits.

As far a wasting money, the money was probably already earmarked for COVID-19 testing or related activities. How is it wasting money that wouldn't or couldn't be used on anything else?

I agree it’s mostly a good thing but it gives one VERY limited piece of information with a very short half-life of relevancy..

Agree. I have two returning UAB students.

RE: UAB Will COVID-19 Test EVERY Returning College Student in Alabama
Is it better than nothing? Okay, it will keep everyone from becoming infected on day 1. But, it relies on the at-home kits being done correctly which the chances of that are near zero. And the results will be useless on week two, because these students are not going to be quarantining, they're going to be out and about, living in the dorms, going to bars, the beach, etc.

And the issue there will be that everyone will think "oh, they're testing the students, college is safe!" but they're not, they're testing on day one, and people with their false sense of security will let their guard down and it'll be a disaster

This is about saving the football season, that's it.

Now, if they commit to testing every student (and faculty/staff--didn't see any mention of that pretty important group) on an ongoing basis throughout the semester then this will be a great thing, and might actually move the needle on overall cases not just cases on campus. But, that's not what was announced and I'm pretty sure won't be. If it is, I'll take my lumps and give kudos where they're due

You can read about UAB's Sentinel Testing plans here (bottom line, goal is to test 5-10% of the campus population every week): https://www.uab.edu/coronavirus/reentry/...el-testing

Big, bold, highlighted letters say it's voluntary. and 5-10% a week means it'll take the whole semester to hit everyone. And I get that they will be able to see hotspots before they infect everyone on campus, but for something that could kill you, you kind of want this to be less of a statistical exercise and more of an exact science

I agree it's a good thing, and that it also has very transient utility. Just bc all these kids test negative doesn't mean they aren't actually positive, won't test positive 2 days later, or that campuses are safe to open to mass amounts of student...

I applaud the idea of testing the students as advertised. A major impact from this will be to create a baseline of important information on the incoming student population and then provide for identification of those in need of observation, medical care, etc. This is a highly vulnerable group whose behavior is already widely recognized to be risky in the Covid 19 world and has a high probability of helping to prevent further deterioration in the health of Alabamians.

This is definitely a good thing and another example of UAB being able to showcase it's leadership across the state.
