If you’ve been reading today, you know Seattle has become a warzone. Anarchists are throwing homemade bombs, mortars and chemicals at police. Fires have been set, peoples homes/businesses have been destroyed/ruined.

“It was not peaceful. They were here to intimidate. Scare people. Scare children. There were children out there and they were asking them what schools they went to. They were yelling the most horrible things you’ve ever heard in your entire life,” said wife Jamie.

“You’re coming to a small community. We see all these peaceful protests getting hijacked in Seattle and Portland and other areas,” said husband Whitney. “It just takes one Molotov cocktail, takes one person trying to light something on fire, one firework going off. Then we now have a neighborhood in crisis. We feared that more than anything, was having a crisis here in our neighborhood that we ultimately didn’t deserve.”

In a statement, Sheriff Adam Fortney said in part:

I spoke with Chief Best on the phone who was not at the residence at the time. I assured her that the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office would deploy whatever resources were necessary to protect her, her family, and her property. I am pleased to report this group decided to disperse and there were no other incidents last night.

The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office has been supportive and accommodating to all peaceful protests that have occurred in our jurisdiction. With that said, protestors targeting one individual’s house is a bullying tactic that will certainly require an extra patrol response to ensure every resident in Snohomish County can feel safe in their own home, with their loved ones, no matter what they choose to do to make a living. If this group or any other group wants to protest the government, we would ask they do so at a government building and not at any individual’s private residence.

Chief Best had a message for both elected leaders in Seattle as well as the group that showed up to her neighborhood.

“I would hope elected officials, and specifically, our City Council would loudly, boldly and assertively denounce this kind of behavior,” said Chief Best. “I’m not a person who can vote or has a specific say in the outcome of the public budget issue. So being there really is not going to make a difference in the outcome.”

The Roulstone’s said Chief Best attended a neighborhood meeting on Sunday to apologize and thank her neighbors.

“She couldn’t believe what the neighborhood did for her. She apologized that this even came here. I told her don’t apologize. We need to apologize to you that this is even happening. it’s unacceptable,” said Jamie.

“We admire her. We see what she’s doing. She’s doing a great job. That this has happened, on her behalf here, we as a neighborhood are rallying behind her,” said Whitney.

On Sunday night, Chief Best made public a letter addressed to the Seattle City Council. In part she wrote:

These direct actions against elected officials, and especially civil servants like myself, are out of line with and go against every democratic principle that guides our nation. Before this devolves into the new way of doing business by mob rule here in Seattle, and across the nation, elected officials like you must forcefully call for the end of these tactics.

The events of this summer were initiated in a moment of grief and outrage over the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers and so many other Black and Brown people suffering at the hands of injustice. All of us must ensure that this righteous cause is not lost in the confusion of so many protestors now engaging in violence and intimidation, which many are not speaking against.

KING 5/Survey USA found “53% of adults surveyed said they opposed or strongly opposed proposals to defund police departments, and a little more than one-third said they supported or strongly supported the proposals.”

An Elway/Crosscut poll released over the weekend, surveying voters statewide, shows an astonishing 73% oppose the defunding of police. When it’s broken down by party identity, 96% Republicans oppose and 51% Democrats oppose.

The council isn’t trusted
What’s especially telling in this new poll is that the Seattle City Council isn’t trusted to handle any defund plan they end up adopting.

With a whopping 61% support, Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best is seen as most trustworthy to “making fundamental changes to SPD while protecting public safety.” Best has been an outspoken critic of the defund plan, calling it the “height of recklessness.”

“I think the word plan is rather loose here. They haven’t got a plan. All they have shown us that they want to reduce the budget by 50%. I haven’t seen any real planning in that. And the real tragedy of doing that is that we will lose 1,100 employees. That’s 50% of our total workforce because most of our budget is made up of our personnel costs and it would be a tragedy,” Chief Best told the Jason Rantz Show on KTTH.

Second most trusted to fundamentally addressing policing issues is Mayor Jenny Durkan. She, too, has called out the council’s plan.

The Seattle City Council comes in a distant fourth in trustworthiness of tackling police reform (47%).

When it comes to trusting the council on policing, it seems increasingly like the council’s recent behavior is alienating constituents.

West Seattle Councilmember Lisa Herbold recently promoted the idea of exclusively firing white cops, on the basis of their race, to address concerns with her 50% defunding scheme. And during a protest, Councilmember (and mayor hopeful) Teresa Mosqueda said a protester was justified in his threat to murder Seattle officers.

Seattle is heading in the wrong direction
Given the rash of recent riots and violent clashes between fringe protesters and Seattle police, it’s not shocking that the city is seen as heading in the wrong direction. And the numbers are shocking.

In May, 59% of those polled said Seattle was headed in the right direction. In July? Only 34%. A whopping 53% of those polled say the city is headed down the wrong track, an alarming uptick from 32% in May.

Council ignores the voters
As of now, the council is publicly ignoring the will of the people. They are pushing ahead with their plans to defund Seattle police. A leaked draft of a resolution — from an unknown councilmember — shows how fringe the plan could go, with an end goal of abolishing the department.

A media campaign by the Seattle Police Officer’s Guild (SPOG) has generated voter support. It earned over 100,000 signatures against defunding the police in just four days. The ads, which can be heard on KTTH radio, target Socialist Councilmember Kshama Sawant. She just released a “plan” to cut the police department by 50%, leaving the details to the chief. This, of course, isn’t much of a plan at all.

Meanwhile, pressure mounts on freshman Councilmembers Andrew Lewis and Dan Strauss. Then-candidates, Lewis and Strauss supported more police, a position that helped earn them seats on the council. Since then, however, they’ve flipped. Both councilmembers have been unresponsive to constituent emails expressing concern.

One Queen Anne constituent of Lewis, for example, was desperate for a response from Lewis. The councilmember was holding a Town Hall on public safety, but didn’t include any guests from the Seattle Police Department. The constituent asked why the police perspective was missing from the mid-afternoon Town Hall.

“When one of your constituents poses a reasonable question to you, it is your duty as an elected official to offer a timely, reasonable answer,” he wrote.

Two emails in total, he only received a form letter ignoring his question. Can Lewis and his colleagues ignore the Seattle constituents on defunding?

4 year terms. Pretty unusual. 7 district members are safe until 2023. 2 at large members are up next year.

4 are new, 2 are in their 2nd term, the Socialist was first elected in 2013, is the longest serving member and represents the CHAZ area.
Of the at large, 1 is in her first term and the other in her 2nd.

Rioters assaulted Seattle’s East Precinct on Monday night. This marked another night of violent, criminal activism against police officers unconnected to anger over a recent police shooting in Wisconsin.

Criminals tried to murder Seattle police
As some in the crowd vandalized the building and tormented police, others brought quick-dry cement to seal police officers inside the building.

The criminals at the 12th Avenue entrance reportedly mixed what is suspected to be cement mix and water in a bucket with a wooden stick before applying it to the door. Photos show the criminals also destroyed the electronic key card off the door, presumably to stop people from getting inside the building.

On the East Pine Street side of the East Precinct, the criminals started a fire. The intent appeared to be to burn the building with the officers inside.

A source tells me the officers inside had to kick the door open to exit the building and disperse the rioters. Luckily, already lacking discernible skills, the rioters did not follow directions and may have used too much water in the cement mixture. Photos indicate it was too runny to fully seal the doorway shut.

One officer was injured and one suspect was arrested.

Police union weighs in against ‘domestic terrorists’
Seattle Police Officers Guild president Mike Solan is condemning the crime, along with the lack of response from city leaders.

“It’s clear that domestic terrorists are continuing to hold our great city hostage by their criminal acts,” Solan tells the Jason Rantz Show on KTTH. “We’re talking about a little over 100 people who continue to force their political agenda to push assaults on officers, destroy private and public property, to continue their dangerous ideology. What’s next has been seen before and I’m fearful that someone will lose their life in the coming days. This could all stop if our public officials would decry and push back against these criminal acts.”
