I'm all for the players looking out for themselves. If it's a inconvenience to fans it probably means it's the right thing to do.

There are plenty of young athletes who would dream of having their spots.
You get a free ride, a platform to demonstrate your skills to get you into the pros if you're good enough, and if you're not pro worthy you at least get an amazing college experience for free.
I'm sick and tired of the ideas to pay or pamper these student athletes. It's time for the schools and NCAA to say come play or don't. There will always be someone willing to take your spot.

Thats about how I feel about it. If these guys are good enough to go pro, then by all means, go pro and make your money. There are tons of other athletes who would love the chance to play college football, have access to great facilities, high level coaching, free housing and food, a stipend and most of all a free college education. There should be no age limits on going pro, and if the pro leagues want to create developmental leagues (like the NBA has), I think thats great too. College shouldn't be the only doorway to going pro (and its not in baseball or basketball) Maybe the NFL can take over the XFL. I just want fair competition, good close games, and decent quality play. That can happen without these guys.

A little over dramatic aren't we? College football needs to do right by their players. And simply getting a scholarship just isn't going to cut it anymore.

Not overdramatic at all. At Rice, a full scholarship is equivalent to a $55-60K/year job. Not bad for part time work. If you can call it work - most guys would do it for free. One of my college roommates walked on to the track team - in a field event he had never competed in, the javelin - expressly to earn a scholarship and help his parents with the expenses. He always seemed happy with the compensation for his work.

But I am pointing directly at your statement "If it's a inconvenience to fans it probably means it's the right thing to do.". I know of no business that increases its profitability by making it tough to be a customer of theirs. Yet the thrust of this movement is to treat college football as a business, and the players as employees. So it is a good thing to make it less attractive to the customers? How?

I am sure they can find Players to fill their spots, who will appreciate a free education, free healthcare, meals and gear for 4-5 years.

The creepy ones are the half mask half face shield. Apparently some company now makes a mask with a cloth surround and clear shield for your mouth so others can see your lips.

Those look REALLY weird.

Don't play. If they don't value a free ride for playing a game decline the scholarship and let someone else play. It's not a right, if its not fair, your right is to not to participate in the system.

Saw this this morning and it's too golden not to share. From the article

"Pac 12 football players have created a list of “demands” 4 the Pac-12/Universities 2 take into consideration, if the demands aren’t addressed/complied w/ the players R threatening to sit out the season..There is significant support growing among ALL 12 teams with 50 or More players on many of teams in support of this action/demands list," Carpenter tweeted. "The initial idea was 2 create a players union, they decided time didn’t allow 4 this & figure the best way to create the change they want is 2 “boycott” the season.

Some of their demands are a 50/50 revenue split, 6 years of insurance after finishing school, more Covid testing, etc etc etc. My opinion is let them boycott; after all, when is the last time the PAC12 was relevant

Let’s compare apples to apples, shall we.

A track and field or tennis scholarship is not the same as football and men’s basketball. Schools make millions on those players and they get nothing, zilch, zero, nada in return. As much as I disliked Johnny Manziel for being a dbag, at least he had a solid argument. He couldn’t charge $5 to sign an autographed jersey that had his name on it but Texas A&M could use his name to raise millions in donations and sell merchandise under his name after winning the Heisman for their own profit (it’s estimated A&M got over $300 million exploiting his name). That’s where I believe schools and the corrupt NCAA don’t have the best interests for the “student-athletes” and if somehow those football and basketball players can get something, I’m all for it.

OK. Lets compare athletes who get 40-75K worth of education and benefits to regular students paying full freight while working delivering pizzas. Who has the better deal?

How do you like them apples?

Schools are more than recouping it's scholarship money from students/athletes. So it seems to me the university is getting the better deal. Also, if students/athletes could work they would work so they could have some change in their pockets.

Make sure you lick those apples real good.

Yep, I am sure they would be happy to work those long hours delivering pizza for chump change while going to class to get that degree.

so if schools are making such a killing why are most of them operating at a deficit? A deficit you want to make worse, BTW.

They are not coal miners, yet you guys want them treated like employees, and act like the U is in the football business.

It would require a complete reworking of the NCAA. Elimination of Title 9 and minimum scholarship sports to play FBS. FBS and Men's Bball (baseball at some schools) support the other 14+ sports scholarships, coaching pay and facilities. Where would this money come from if not the profit made in football and basketball?

Mark Packard was discussing this some yesterday. Name & Likeness is completely different that what these PAC12 players are demanding. It cost about $74,570 a year to go to Stanford. That probably includes room and board. Then take into account on the job training that you are given as a football player by top notch professionals. Now stop and think from a simpler point of view. What does a plumbers apprentice make while working for a master plumber? It takes 2 to 5 years to become a master plumber and the Master Plumber you are working for is making a lot of money off of your work during that period. I find it very hard to sympathize with a group of individuals who get preferred status at some of the top schools in the country when they complain about whats fair and unfair. Now if you want to argue that a player has the right to sell his autographs or his image and likeness then maybe there is an argument there, but these demands are ridiculous.

My grandson is working on becoming a journeyman plumber. Of course, he will still use his boss's truck and tools. Capitalist pig living off the workers! I wonder where the Pac-12 players will play if their boss fires them? Build their own stadium? And I wonder where the fans will come from if they aren't wearing the school's jerseys.
