Banning investment in China?
https://www.realclearpolitics.com/articl...tment.html

Article suggests an option the Labor Department has:

"...The Labor Department in the next few weeks has the opportunity to cut off a main spigot of U.S. funds flowing to China by barring private U.S. retirement plans from investing in Chinese companies, an unprecedented step that would cost China billions in U.S. investment.

In fact, those advocating the bold move argue that the Labor Department has a fiduciary responsibility to do so, as well as the perfect opportunity in a pending regulation governing these investments. The Labor Department is currently finalizing changes to the regulation governing private retirement funds and could simply decide to disqualify all companies that don’t adhere to current U.S. banking and investment transparency laws, which would automatically prevent investment in Chinese companies. In late June the department released changes to the rule for “financial factors in selecting plan investments” and will finalize it in the coming weeks...."

True. But we can either deal with them now or die later.

I say move the pharmaceutical trade to Canada and Cuba. Keep what's in India. Move manufacturing to Puerto Rico, various South American locations, and Mexico. That way you don't kneecap the retirement funds nearly as much and our most needed products are close by, and the United Sates becomes a benefactor for our neighbors. 60 years of cold war with Cuba hasn't worked. Let's use industry to make them wealthier and their cancer research could help us.

Your suggestion is a great plan. Separate from that though it seems like the goal is to get China's inflationary economy to collapse. Before we as a nation start running around like a whirling dervish, I would like to know if there is any predictive analysis on when that black swan event would occur in China. We could be looking at a Japan style multi-decade ennui instead. In such an event the financial manipulation efforts would have been for naught.

Retirement funds won't help anyone much when the Chinese own them.

You can only worry about what you can control. We need our medications and infrastructure closer to home. We help Taiwan and Japan and South Korea and Viet Nam if we have to. But first things first. China needs Middle Eastern Oil. It is a lot like Japan circa 1927. But we know that going in. Contain their sphere of control and bleed their resources. They won't go toe to toe with nukes. We can't get into a conventional war with them anywhere near our soil. That's why enriching our neighbors is a must and it creates a great barrier. And it wouldn't hurt to play the Russia card either. Putin doesn't trust them anymore than we do. If we can ally with Comrade Joe Stalin then doing the same with Vlad Putin isn't so unthinkable at all.

Better to be kneecapped now than to deal with a chinese collapse later.

Chinese companies are refusing to abide by the audits required to be listed on the stock exchanges. THat means they are doing shady stuff, and the last entity that needs to be pumping money into them are those who hold retirement account monies.

I believe everyone suspects shady accounting but the G20 and World Bank memberships clearly provide a patina of legitimacy.

Guys please! It's a Communist system. The State runs it all and controls the CEO's. The part that only makes them seem legitimate is the they are actually Fascists with a Communist control running Corporations that only have the facade of legitimacy. The People's Republic of China is formidable because they are a hybrid of both Communism and Fascism with a more Fascist wealth distribution than a communist one.

And because of that control structure we haven't a clue as to what they actually have, but they will not go belly up until they have to compete for natural resources which is why they have bought the crap out of Gold. They are a growing beast and if we don't neuter them soon they will devour us at their earliest certainty of victory.

We are the ones with 25 trillion in national debt and a somewhat depleted reserve of precious metals. We are only doing well because the world still fears our nuclear capability and our technological superiority in Space, which due to neglect is being rapidly gained upon.

Wonder what happens when China does the same thing to us and stops buying our debt? May not want to play chicken on this...
