Ramifications of No Fall Sports College and Pro
What if there were no sports this fall or no fans in the stands even if there were sports-mainly football.

1. How will that affect sports media channels and their ability to pay the royalty fees?

2. How will it affect college revenue with tickets sold, etc?

3. How will it affect the local economy if there are no football/fall sports?

I am not sure many are actually looking that deep into the negative or positive ramifications. Perhaps this will really cause a reorganization of sports conferences, etc.

I honestly do not know the answers to those questions, but I'm sure the AD's do. The way a school behaves is going to indicate how dire things are/might be.
We heard from Bourne a month or more ago that schools that were not even entertaining the idea of a new conference. The less revenue that comes in, the more desperate schools will be I think their actions will indicate that.
And that talk was coming from missing basketball and spring sports revenue. Imagine how much revenue will be lost if football doesn't happen AND/OR basketball doesn't either.
I think the quieter programs are, the better position they are in all of this. I think JMU can weather these storms, but every school is going to have a tipping point. I think we are lucky in the fact that we are probably on the better side of things than most.

RE: Ramifications of No Fall Sports College and Pro
With regards to your last point, I wrote this up on another forum and figure I'd post it here.

On one hand, I'm worried about what happens when the football season is cancelled/postponed and/or it's announced that classes will be moved online. I would imagine without any more stimulus, many restaurants and small businesses that cater to students and visitors associated with the college will have to close up shop.

On the other hand, I'm worried about the town's ability to keep up with their COVID procedures given a ~20,000 person influx into town when school opens. What do the grocery stores look like? What do the downtown bars and restaurants look like? While many people feel confident that college students, on the whole, won't get severely sick from COVID, but some will. And those who get COVID and don't get very sick may spread it to people who work in those support businesses. How will the hospital handle that influx of cases?

We have to remember that the good, in this situation, comes with the bad. I'm not making a judgement call about which one is worse; but there are multiple perspectives to take into consideration.

I respectfully disagree. I DON'T think the AD's know the answers to those questions. I will give you they are likely the most informed and have the best intelligence, but they don't know where/how/when/what this is going. The questions hburg poses are all huge question marks to the AD's and University Presidents at this point. At some point in the next 2-3 weeks, some very difficult decisions will ultimately have to be made...and even then, there will be contingency plans associated with them because 21 days from now into the 1st week of August there will still be a large amount of uncertainty and risk assessment going on.

This is life in 2020 sad to say. Let's hope 2021 is the time to soar from the bottoming out we are experiencing this calendar year.

I've spent the summer here at Smith Mountain Lake near Roanoke. It's VT country here and the local news did a story on the economics of no football in Blacksburg this year if that happens. Many small businesses say they would have to close up as the past spring of no sports here has just about killed most of them. A no football 2020 would be the dagger in the heart for them. I'm sure that would be the case in most football towns. I've spent time in Auburn, Al., and its a small town with a big University. They live on the university's drawing money. Going to affect a lot more than the players.

Yep. Even if CFB takes place, it will likely see anywhere from no fans in the stands to a significantly small percentage attended. Those dependent on college FB tourism are going to be severely affected no doubt about it. If CFB stadiums allow say 20% of the stadium attendance, I'd be willing to bet almost all of that is coming in on the day of the game and leaving soon after (read: very limited hotel stays and restaurant patrons before/after).

RE: Ramifications of No Fall Sports College and Pro
I saw something very hopeful today. My son and I have been building an outdoor kitchen in the brutal Texas heat. We work for an hour or two, jump in the pool to cool off, then hit it again. Today, while relaxing in the pool, I noticed something I haven't seen in months, jetliners, one after another, flying into DFW. We live 20 minutes from DFW and right in the approach path from the east. Pre-COVID, jetliners in the sky on the glide path to DFW were a common sight every minute or two, often several a minute. Since COVID, the sky over our house has been eerily quiet and absent of the giant birds. But today, it was like old times, jetliners aplenty, lining up and flying into DFW. I'm not sure why this has happened all of a sudden, but I am certainly happy to see it.

DFW went from 4th busiest airport in the US pre virus, to busiest, and also busiest airport in the world in May, and still is. This is due to the fact that AA has cut way back on direct flights, and returned to the old heavy hub and spoke, and their #1 hub is DFW. Still way down from pre virus 200k+ passengers a day in the summer. They're just not nearly as down as some other major airports US and worldwide. DFW:
April: About 10k passengers a day.
May: About 25k passengers a day.
Now: 100k+ passengers a day.

Thanks, Statsman (you really should change your screen name to that). What you posted makes sense. I just noticed a huge increase in traffic today.

Am familiar with the airline scheduling- they do monthly schedules, so their current pace of daily flights started beginning of July. I've flown through DFW several times recently, and noticed the news reports explaining the increase.

Spent 3 years in the Metroplex, living in Allen. Nice people and great high school football. Don't miss that oven-like heat though. 90 days in a row over 100 and never dipped below 80. The pool would be 12 degrees cooler than the outside temp. Sadly, it was still 93 degrees.

Is Allen that much hotter than Dallas? Dallas record is (or was) 42 straight 100 degree days, set in 1980.

LOL! I love 93 degree water! Enough below body temp to be refreshing and not so frigid that you need a wetsuit. I recall as a kid growing up in east Rockingham County and spending every minute outdoors that I could playing in the mountain streams and swimming holes. Good times, but I could not do that today. I am old and spoiled.

I was back in the valley over the Fourth visiting relatives and my wife and I spent a day with two of our daughters at a swimming hole in Stokesville. Very picturesque (the first thing we saw was a snake making his way across the swimming hole when we invaded his environment), but way too cold for this old man.

I'll take Texas temps any day. In fact, I would like to live even farther south. Belize is very appealing to me. Twelve months of swimming weather. Texas in the winter is not a lot different than Virginia. Anyone who was at our first Natty in Frisco knows what I mean. We were tailgating in 11 degree weather at 6 AM. Our beer was literally freezing in our cups.

Pic of the outdoor kitchen my son and I are building. Almost done. Yo, Horny, check out the longhorn steer cabinet knobs.

Haha- you do make me laugh BDK. We moved into our house in Sept of 2011 and obviously had been down there several times through the summer, looking and checking out the 'hoods. That figure was something our realtor told us about that year's summer. Did also hear bar patrons speak of the horror of that summer and the consecutive days streak.

But to your point, no-I never bothered to look it up to see if the statements were 100% accurate or suburban legend. Allen seemed to be about the same as Dallas in terms of temps. Burning the bottoms of my feet on the deck of the pool at 8:00 at night told me everything I needed to know.

3 more days to get through for a real US team sport to begin.

Fingers crossed for Thursday night. Hopefully professional team sports will start and gather steam on a positive note.

Last week one night, I was watching a Braves intrasquad scrimmage via my MLB.tv subscription online. It was interesting to me when one of the Braves' top prospects, OF Christian Pache, slid into 2B and came up with an apparent ankle injury (turned out he's OK) how everyone reacted.

In normal settings, he would have a player, base coach, perhaps nearest ump, and then the medical team would run out from the dugout to assess. In this scenario, the nearest players and the 2B Ump all started waving their hands and arms in a motion for everyone to stay away from Pache. I realize you had to be watching it to appreciate it in the moment, but it just dawned on me how different baseball is going to be over the next 2-3 months (assuming they can get through it into October). Base coaches with masks on. Umps with masks on. Frowning upon spitting and the like. One of the Braves, Dansby Swanson, hit a 3-run dinger. Upon rounding the bases, the 2 guys ahead of him who scored waited for him near home plate and they all did a foot tap instead of high fiving.

Having said all this, I hope the Astros get beaned at least 17 times a night. (and, the Red Sox too just for good measure) Damn cheaters.

Just sayin'. 04-cheers

In 1998 and 1999 we had about 25-30 of consecutive 100 degree days. Pool was well over 90, but refreshing. Dust from west TX on everything. Had a 1992 Isuzu pick-up with an AC system that didn't really do much...lived the the old joke "had two-forty AC"
