Exclamation Breakthrough Could Make Football Possible
From Yahoo! News:
Australian researchers invent 20-minute coronavirus blood test
Quote:The researchers at Monash University said their test can determine if someone is currently infected and if they have been infected in the past.

Short-term applications include rapid case identification and contact tracing to limit viral spread... Hundreds of samples can be tested every hour, the researchers said...
It's not a cure or even a treatment, but it does make it theoretically possible to screen players a half hour before kickoff, which could be HUGE - if it works as advertised.

Thoughts?

You'd have to isolate everyone before hand - what if the quick test shows three positives, and those three have been in close contact with the rest of the team?

Although you could argue that the exposure has already happened, you got the players out of the stadium, so might as well play the game.

This could be a huge breakthrough to slow the spread.

Yeah but this thing was just invested. We're talking about football in 6 weeks.

Why would you do a blood test right before playing a violent game?

You drive 2 hours to go to a game after paying $200 per ticket, get in, go watch some practice, maybe walk the concourse, find your seat, go to sit down, watch some practice, and now the game's cancelled because your star QB caught the rona. Thanks for your support, please visit the concessions on the way out, and have a safe trip home.

Yeah, they'd have to be awfully desperate to use this technology for gameday testing. I'd think twice about buying tickets if I found out my team was using this.

I was told that Abbott Labs already gave us the true 5 minute test back in late March.

Just sayin'

I think the huge money involved is making football possible.

I will say it right now, for the record, while the pandemic rages away and medical doomsayers are predicting campuses will not open: We will have college football this Fall. We will have the conference seasons and then the bowls and the playoffs.

Just as the pro leagues are going on, CFB is essentially a pro league.

Saw that too, and said could be made cheaply. In Finland, right? I believe sometime in September was the earliest.

In my experience, if people want something badly enough, any excuse will do.

I guess the question would be would it require any of the reagents for it or is it something that could be done otherwise?

The availability and the expense of the kits are an issue. You can buy the (fairly expensive) machine, but if you have no test kits it's not doing you any good.

That's why the progress on saliva tests are so interesting ... at $1-$5 test, you can test before every practice, and only use the more expensive tests when there is a confirmed outbreak.

I hope you are right. I feel slightly better than I did about a week and a half ago when the Big Ten and PAC 12 announced they were going conference only

If such a test were to become available, why would we assume that college football would get any special priority for what limited supplies would be available in the Fall? Don't you think those supplies would be better used to reopen schools and businesses first?
