Cal recruited nationally, as well as getting who he wanted from the city. Finch and Dana - different times, to be sure - but they recruited 99% locally. Their success depended upon how strong the city classes were. Fortunately, we had some strong city classes back then.

After we had fallen and were having trouble getting back up (sound familiar?), Cal managed to convince kids from Chicago, Detroit, Camden, Boston, etc. to come rebuild our program. And he did it going toe-to-toe with programs like Kansas and Kentucky for the players he wanted. He was a great recruiter.

Now Now, don't resort to crass personal attacks. For sure don't physically threaten anyone. Belittles you and our board.

When losing a debate best to sit back an analyze how you lost. Typically it's you didn't grasp all the facts and didn't understand the frame of the question or oppositions argument. In this case; you did all 3.

Welcome to our board BTW; you've almost been her a year. Good luck making it to 2.

If you don't know that I meant bash you with words from the mic, I can't help you. The only thing that belittles me is having to put up with ignorance from posters like you. I believe I lose IQ points having to read your inept statements.

Since your post is still clueless and misses the OP statement, I laugh at your insults.

Yes, I have been reading this board for years and joined about a year ago. The only reason I won't be here for years to come is if other great posters leave and I'm left reading the stupidity of the uninformed.

Penny will be #1 before he’s finished. Without a doubt.

Larry was the best we’ve had at convincing high profile Memphis kids to stay here.

Agree, up to a point, Marc.
I wonder-if the sheer DOLLARS that are available to some of today's kids had been available in Larry's tenure, which (if any) Memphis kids might have gone for the payday? Purely conjecture, what do you think?

It was a different time during Larry’s tenure. The NBA really didn’t take kids out of HS except in rare cases... Shawn Kemp and Moses Malone come to mind... so he didn’t have to compete with them. Too, SEC schools, outside of Kentucky, Tennessee & later Arkansas weren’t spending squat on basketball, so it made keeping local kids home a little easier. The world was just smaller.

Memphis kids didn’t go to Memphis until Larry stayed home, so he had an authentic story to tell. Larry was just a good dude.

Times were different. Most kids stayed home if their school was high caliber.

RE: Was Coach Finch Best Recruiting Coach?
U r welcome Browning Hall,
Ike is always trying to keep u Dudes enlightened in all things,
I'm sure you r aware JTII, took the road of locking down D.C., wasn't a player in the city he didn't sign if he really wanted him. Then some Dude named Ewing signed out of Boston and JTII became a national recruiter.
Ike thinks Penny is following the map of JTII and will eventually be our best recruiter and land the national title.
I'ke will be on the street tonite to see if any news on local 5 star football player as of now Ike is getting conflicting
News.

Cal had more ability to do so, but less desire. He got who he wanted locally.
Kirk had success at the same level as Finch. Of course, Finch was part of Kirk's success, but we're talking HC recruiting.

Except Thaddeus Young. I think Thaddeus could have helped us replace Shawne Williams and make the final 4.

True

I think Cal knew he was playing from behind. He would have been a game changer.

Nike, Mr. Raveling had their claws in.

Plus, Georgia Tech is a helluva helluva engineering school.
