Amazed a MAC Freshman of the Year ended up quitting football before his senior season.

He probably realized he wasn't going to start. At that point, you have to ask if the juice is worth the squeeze. Go through an rigorous off-season to maybe start if Bowers gets injured? Or focus on your studies and prepare for making money post college.

He's accomplished a lot. Probably wasn't going to accomplish much more outside of that. He had a rough playing style, his body probably thanks him for retiring.

He played out of his mind in that MAC championship game, but never regained that swagger or improved. He gave his best...

Agree. Childers put on one of the best come-from-behind, single-game performances I've ever seen by an NIU QB. Yes, he had help, but I will always remember that game for his throws and Brinkman's catches. But everyone has to make their own life decisions.

RE: 2020 football roster is up
Here's my take:

OFFENSE

If the starters on the line stay healthy its a really good group. If there start to be injuries then there is next to no experienced depth. With Bowers being less mobile and concussion prone we need that group up front to do a good job.
In terms of weapons there is potential to be a very, very good offense. At RB the biggest question is if Ducker is so good you absolutely have to get him on the field as a true freshman, b/c otherwise a group of Nettles, Collins, Gregory & Oliver is more than adequate as it is.
As far as pass catchers go; Crawford should have a big year as the #1 tight end (possibly #1 target, period). We pretty much know what Tucker is at this point: solid but not exceptional. Hopefully Richie can be more consistently dangerous in his 2nd year in the offense and w/ Bowers. Robinson is useless we all know that. If either or both McCray/Toure can step up and live up to their recruiting rankings that would be a major game changer. Throw in Love, Mitchell, Payne & Travis and it's not very likely that any of the freshman get much of an opportunity this year, although Howard & Rudolph look like legit playmakers on film.

DEFENSE

Linebacker is the team's best position group with Deveaux, Pugh, Cole, Labus & Rattin leading the way.
Up front you have Kramer who is pretty much the only known commodity. Mattox showed some very nice flashes last year as a freshman. Pretty much just have to hope that a few guys are actually really good players and are just young/haven't had an opportunity yet. If not, only positive thing I could say is we have some really decent #'s so we could run lots of players in and out allowing them to go all out on every play and try and wear down opposing O-Lines.
At CB we have 2 likely starters in Walker & Thomas, but there should be a ton of competition as well with Aitken, Harris, March, Evans & Gandy. So while largely inexperienced this could turn out to be a really solid group.
Safety should be interesting, to say the least. There's 2 RS-Soph walk-ons in Ross & Earl that have little to no playing time, and that is your most D1 experience. Seems likely that the transfer Appolon will have a really good chance at taking one of the starting spots. Ross, Earl, early enrollee Brown & RS-Frosh coverted CB Henderson are the likely other competition. For my $$ with very limited info to go on with it being such a young group, I would go with Appolon and Henderson. Gives you the ability to play your base 4-3 defense, a nickle type defense with Henderson covering the slot & a 4-4 type defense with Appolon in the box and Henderson in the deep middle; all without having to substitute and tip the offense off as to what you are going to do from snap to snap.
Overall the defense really worries me for this season, but I think has a really good shot at being an elite group in the next few years.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Abrell (LS), Richardson (K), and Ference (P) should be a pretty elite group. Only question will be who will return punts and kicks. Would love to see a truly dynamic playmaker back there for a change. Seems like since Tommy Lee left it's just been a caravan of "we know they won't drop the ball" guys, with a sprinkling of actual returns from Beebe. Possible candidates: Richie, Love, Howard, Waylee, Rudolph & Beiber.

Robinson is an interesting player. He has all the measurables and looks the part. But he hits the field and can't adjust to catches, looking completely awful. Hopefully he can turn it around, because there's no reason why he shouldn't be similar to Kenny Golladay.

I agree he is an interesting player.
But he has little, if not NO, comparison to Kenny G.
Kenny G was a shorter explosive receiver that then grew like 6" in college.

Robinson came in pretty much maxed out; body wise. He was 6'5" and has stayed there. He doesn't have the frame to bulk up much because he wasn't what most would call fast, or explosive at his weight. He came in at 192 and is listed this year at 210. He doesn't look to be fast enough to threaten deep so defenses can just sit on the shallow breaking routes.

Again, I like him as a prospect and a college WR. I do, I really do, I'm a sucker for bigger receivers, you just cannot teach height and length like what he has. But with his limitations athletically I would love to see him next to or across the line from Crawford and just wreak havoc with short-intermediate option routes; with zigs and zags all over the field.

But comparing him to Kenny G is just off base. Kenny G is a nightmare NFL match up let alone in college, and let alone in the MAC. He is the rare height-weight-speed guy with above average speed, agility, and elusiveness. Plus he just has that "separation factor" at all levels of the field. Hence why he is putting up big time numbers in the NFL.

Yeah, I was wrong. I'm looking at the kids size, thinking why the hell not.

Kenny G was 6'4 and a 175 out of St Rita, looking way too skinny to be an FBS athlete. But I do remember them saying that he probably ran the best routes in the state.

As for other receivers, I like what I see in Tyrice Richie. He's pretty explosive and if he can play consistently could be successful. I also like what I see in Cole Tucker.

I wish he would catch the ball more regularly.

Robinson reminds me of the line in the movie Little Giants - hands like frying pans: Skip to 1;15 of this You tube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIPAKnjEVQw

Robinson is not that bad, but he does have poor hands when it comes to catching very catchable passes.

Not something I saw on our end, but would've made sense considering his dad played football here, and his dad is cousins with Aaron McKie.

RE: 2020 football roster is up
Other than size, I'm not sure why we and a bunch of other schools recruited this kid. No offense to him, I hope he turns it around. But this is from his profile:

High School
• As a captain his senior year, helped lead the team to a 6-2 record.
• Rushed for 108 yards with seven catches during his senior campaign.
• As a junior, rushed for 324 yards with 39 catches and 11 touchdowns.
• Robinson was named to the list of top players in Broward County by local media.
• Averaged 13 points per game in basketball.

I counted 6 receptions in his highlight and the rest were blocks. Wondering if that's from his senior year and he was injured a bunch?

I didn't see Michael Love on the roster. Is he still on the team?

Carey could not recruit and develop WR's. 76% of the WR's recruited during Carey's tenure never caught a single pass for NIU. Two (12%) of the most productive WR's he brought in did it last year for a different staff (Tucker & Richie). Basically Aregeros Turner, DJ Brown, Christian Blake, Chad Beebe, Spencer Tears & Jauan Wesley are the only Carey guys to be productive under Carey. Those 5 guys COMBINED averaged 2 catches for 23 yards per game and 1 TD every 7 Games for their careers. Now we know there were some serious QB struggles during a lot of that period as well, but still... Yikes!
