I'm sure despite not working they still want to be paid. IMO go for it, people will adjust accordingly and make public education irrelevant.

I always told my kids (regarding adulthood, not when they were actually kids) "If you don't work you don't eat". Maybe teachers need that lesson.

There are reasons beyond education for kids to go back to school. Some aren't eating well, exercising, socializing, being scheduled etc etc... quite often they aren't being shown/told how to socially distance or practice good hygiene etc... and the stresses at home can be unbearable... especially in a household with one or more parents out of work.

I can't say I've looked enough into it to know if it can be done 'safely', but it's not a 'no discussion' either way.

For those older teachers who are in the higher risk group and scared to go back, they can be the teachers who work with the online learning.

In our state and others, there is talk that those parents who wish their kids to not go physically to school yet can choose the online option. What has some parents upset is that they need to make their choices very soon, as the school districts have to do some planning now.

Somebody needs to be the teacher for the online option. Those teachers that are afraid have that option. At least here, the pay is the same.

Our county is giving 4 options. We signed our 2 kids up for the brick and mortar regular school. As of yesterday about 15% are choosing distance learning.

There have been plumbers and airline pilots that have died from it or with it too, dummy.

What makes you think a teacher automatically caught it from some little kid who hasn’t been there since March , instead of the local quickie mart or bed bath and beyond?

More likely Karen’s husband who’s been trolling the local divorcee market to get away from her brought it on home as a little gift. Far more likely than from little Amy who hasn’t seen a classroom in nearly 6 months.

Pilots can't fly if they are on medications if they have health issues. Teachers do not have the restrictions. There are a lot of people or staff in these schools between the age of 40 up to in their 80s. Those are the ones that are mainly at risk of dying from the virus.

RE: School Re-opening Debate: "It's Not About Kids, It's About Power"
Two things, David.

1) The teaching profession is much younger these days. One of the alphabet channels did a survey which showed most teachers are under 45.
The risk for that age group is not real high. A lot of us 'old farts' got out early once things started going downhill. Like cops, I wouldn't recommend it as a profession unless a person was really gung ho. The job will beat that out of a person real quick. Dealing with today's parents is difficult, not to mention their offspring.

2) As I pointed out up above, those who are at high risk can work the online learning and not have to go physically into the classroom.
