RE: NMSU dominant in WAC Tournament...
Didn't the WAC announce that CBU will be eligible for the WAC Tourney. But, they are still not eligible for the NCAA tourney. So, a few questions:

For the 2021 WAC tourney there will be 7 teams. How would be bracket work? #6 vs #7, then the winner plays #3 seed, #4 vs #5, with the top 2 seeds getting byes?

What happens if CBU wins the WAC Tourney? Will the WAC's automatic bid, go to a P5 8th place team?

I think if CBU gets to the semi finals, the refs will heavily favor the other team, so that the WAC can actually send a team to the NCAA and get their money!

I think if I remember correctly, if CBU wins the WAC Tournament, the NCAA bid will be awarded to the regular season champion or the highest finishing "eligible" team in the final standings (if CBU happens to win the regular season as well). Otherwise, the other six teams will be competing for the NCAA bid in the WAC tourney.

As for the WAC Tournament brackets, I can imagine, the WAC will default to what was done prior. The #1 seed will get a first round bye in the WAC tournament while the other six play.

The impression I get from the other commenters here, some of whom seem to actually know this stuff, is that the WAC gets to send someone period. If CBU wins it could be the 2nd place team, or the regular season winner, or some other method decided ahead of time by the conference. But maybe one of the experts should weigh in.

EDIT: PistolPete knows better....and types faster.

Bingo. However, the other post-season tournaments are all for the taking.

If the CBI and CIT resume this coming season, all WAC teams will be eligible. The only two tournaments that are operated by the NCAA are the NCAA Tournament (of course) and NIT. The CBI and CIT are pay to play. On a side note, I doubt NMSU will ever play in the CBI or CIT. If NMSU doesn't make it to either the NCAA or NIT, the University will not fund the cost to participate in a post season tournament. They will just end the season and start preparing for the following one.

Looked it up. $50K is a lot of money, surprised we went for it. I can also see that for NMSU it would be a letdown rather than an opportunity.

Is there an info graphic with teams that are 0 for their last 11 NCAA tournament appearances?

See if there is also one for teams that haven't made it to the NCAA tourney in 51 years.

The only other "current" WAC team to go to the NCAA tournament is Seattle U. And, they haven't been to the big dance in over 50 years. NMSU has been to the NCAA tournament 11 times in the last 22 years; which predates the current WAC competition. That's at least a NCAA trip ever other years. And, 25 times overall... and it probably would have been 26 times if not for the corona virus preempting the tournament. If you're going to do the talk (about NMSU not winning in the NCAA tourney) at least do the walk (have your team make the NCAA tournament occasionally).

Considering SU wasn’t D1 for 28 years and ineligible for a few after that, 50 plus years isn’t entirely accurate. Whatever makes you feel better though.

What makes me feel "better" is watching my team make the NCAA tourney most every year, with a punchers chance to win a game or two. It never gets old. Tough to win when you are given a low seed. Perhaps teams like SU should step up to raise the profile of the WAC champion and get them to a better seed.

I'm good with all of NMSU's NCAA appearance. Obviously Seattle U is still paying for its decision to drop down from D1; because after 12 years back, it's still looking for its' next NCAA appearance. One has to consider, since Seattle last NCAA appearance, NMSU has been an independent and played in four different conference. Stability has not been in NMSU's past, present, and future. But consistency has been. Seven out on eight Aggies coaches during the last 51 years have taken NMSU to the NCAA tournament at some point during their Aggie tenure. Henson (7)... Hayes (1)... McCarthy (5)... Theus (1)... Menzies (5)... Weir (1)... Jans (3 and counting).

Texans just mad because New Mexicans kicked their butts in 1841 (Santa Fe Expedition) and 1862 (Civil War). What is funny is in 1850, Texans tried to get New Mexicans to become part of Texas and New Mexicans told them to go **** themselves haha damn I'm proud of my ancestors and it should be piss off Arizonians to know that you were New Mexico before Arizona and your first capital city, Mesilla. Pretty much Las Cruces. We're your daddy.
