Why the NCAA doesn't control college football and never will

Key passage:

"Football Bowl Subdivision conferences have never been closer to breaking away from the NCAA. The small steps to separation began in 1984, but those steps became leaps in recent years. The five “power” conferences formed their own group, the “Autonomy 5,” in 2014 for the purpose of forming its own legislation. Their always-evolving power has been on full display this summer. The commissioners of the five most powerful conferences have met almost daily during the pandemic to discuss options for the upcoming football season. In a sense, the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC became a superconference by working so closely this summer to develop testing protocols and scheduling plans."

Separation is coming. Possibly much sooner than most expect.

These meetings also make clear there is no P6 and never will be. CUSA has as much voice as the AAC, which is none.

The author should have paid closer attention to what SEC commissioner Sankey had to say in the fall out of the Big Ten announcement about thinking all the conferences were being honest with each other and were working together. He was VERY angry with the Big Ten and went further by saying since they weren't working together, the SEC would be looking out for itself in the future. After that statement the ACC quickly changed course and fell in line with the SEC and the Big 12 adopted a similar stance shortly thereafter.

The only way the P5 breaks away right now is if the Big10/Pac12 capitulate to the SEC. And those two are too arrogant in their own self importance to allow anyone to dictate terms to them.

Pete Thamel
@PeteThamel
Sources: The ACC is discussing scheduling models, with 10 league games and a "plus one" outside the conference as the favorite. The ACC start date is still being debated between September 12, 19 and 26.

**Hat tip to WesternBlazer

If this is the ACC's favorite format, I wouldn't be surprised if it's the direction the SEC is leaning. Both leagues have big cross conference in-state rivalries that financially need to be played, unlike the Big10 and PAC12. Our two instate SEC programs don't but AU already plays at UNC and seems like Alabama will play BYU so they are close to set.

The SEC Commish can bluster but in this case I'll believe what I see. If there is a season, it will look remarkably like the leagues have already separated. I'd call it a test run.

So, IF the ACC goes 10 +1, who does Miami keep on the schedule UAB, Temple or Wagner?

ACC Current remaining viable Non-Conference Games (ACC HOME GAMES)

Boston College - @ Kansas or OHIO
Clemson - SOUTH CAROLINA
Duke - CHARLOTTE or MIDDLE TENNESSEE
Florida State - FLORIDA
Georgia Tech - @ Georgia
Louisville - KENTUCKY
Miami - UAB, TEMPLE or WAGNER
North Carolina - vs. Auburn (Atl), @ UCF or UCONN
NC State - MISSISSIPPI STATE, LIBERTY or Troy
Notre Dame - @ Navy, ARKANSAS or WESTERN MICHIGAN
Pittsburgh - MIAMI, OHIO or @ Marshall
Syracuse - LIBERTY or @ Western Michigan
Virginia - @ Old Dominion, VMI or UCONN * vs. West Virginia (Atl)
Virginia Tech - LIBERTY, @ Middle Tennessee or NORTH ALABAMA
Wake Forest - APPALACHIAN ST or @ Old Dominion

The Atlanta Braves lost BOTH catchers (negative tests but symptoms, they'll have to re-test) and had to pull from the minors.

Michigan State's ENTIRE football team is quarantined after numerous positives.

If there is an attempt at a season, ridiculous stuff like this is going to happen weekly to multiple teams.

Easy decision

Miami don't want another C-USA team to 04-chairshot04-rock

Temple was the school Coach Diaz has left at the alter after signing the contract. A revenge game for the Owls05-mafia

So be it. Play your second or third team guy or even fourth team. Maybe a team will have a Cinderella season and a blue blood will have to play a third team quarterback. A guy has to quarantine. A guy breaks a leg. At least you get the quarantined guy back. Suck it up and play ball or shut it down for a year.

What happens when you lose three guys out of the starting OL or DL?

Whatever. We can all sit and speculate all we want. All we can really do is wait and watch until we find out.

Think that there will be some games played but it is unlikely that anyone gets in a complete season, and it is entirely possible the plug gets pulled overall. I love my football but not to the point that I expect the players to put their lives and longterm health at risk. No one knows better than UAB fans that if you have to sit out a year you will survive.

Rutgers has become the second Big Ten team in two days to quarantine its entire program. RU football had four positive tests for Covid-19 after returning to campus June 15. Yesterday the school learned of an additional six more positive cases.

The CDC and the WHO have both said they are not 100% sure how much protection you get from a previous infection. People who previously tested positive have antibody numbers in 2-3 months that barely register. "Everyone getting it" is not going to solve this and it is really medical malpractice for a licensed physician to be advocating that we shoot for that

There have been patients who have tested positive again after their initial infection, a few weeks after testing negative twice 48 hrs or more apart..

You don’t know as much as you claim to know..

malpractice ,,,for a comment on blazertalk ,,,try to sue me for that
hope that you have a big paid desk job

You are right they cannot said 100 % because nothing is 100 % ,ask people which color is the sun ,,,5 % will be wONT said yellow ...simple statistic
most of the test dont know which antibody to look for and they are not very sensitive yet

THE CDC and WHo (this one is funny) play the safe card and I UNDERSTAND ,,,SOME dont seem to understand

FYi CDC AND WHO miss the boat when they didnt protect the senior citizen living in nursing home ,,and said nothing about the death sentence of ventilator (10 % survival )
Those number and fact were available late december 2019 for some who read medical literature

fyi
I guaranty none of the football players from michigan state will died from the virus , most of them wont even know , some few will be sick like a bad flu ,,,,,

once again every one who are in contact with civilisation will get infected by the virus ,,,,it is a new virus and no one had seen this virus and had protection aka antibody from it

agency try to help but you need to use your comment sense ,example TCH is still like heroin a class one drug by the FDA

It is not certain what Covid 19 may set one up for down the road. Chicken pox sets you up for a later case of shingles so Covid might have other consequences down the road, and that is without considering mutations of the virus as with the flu. Plus, all the talk about a vaccine seems to presume 100% effectiveness while most don't claim that level from the past.

The sun is white. It appears yellow from Earth because some colors are scattered by the atmosphere.

And that's why you don't take scientific "facts" from an amateur using that there common sense.

So with all due respect, I'll ask astronomers about the color of the sun, and epidemiologists about the spread of Covid-19.

RE: Time to face reality: ‘No one is playing college football in the fall’
The issue in college football, as we are seeing, is who's going to "shut everything down?" The NCAA? They are a voluntary governing body at FBS level. They could certainly "oversee" a shutdown if it was voted that way by members, but they have no power to shut down FBS football unless the majority demands it. The conferences? That's more likely but only because they wield the power of the mighty $$ and own the TV agreements (I think all radio agreements are lumped into each school's media rights but could be mistaken). Is a CUSA school going to go ahead with the season if the conference puts the TV contracts on hold? Only if they don't mind losing basically a TON of money. Then again, conferences are voluntary organizations, too. But it's one thing to have a large enough portion of the 130 FBS schools agree to keep playing, quite another to get enough "rogues" out of 14 to cobble together a schedule.

That's not mentioning the legal liability if the NCAA & a school's conference recommended shutting it down and a school plays anyway then one or more deaths from COVID-19 symptoms. A school has lost the legal cover of both the NCAA & conference at that point and would be very near someone taking everything but the socks from the athletic dept...if not from the school itself. I guess I should add that the legal ramifications might be covered by waivers signed by players assuming they are 18 & up.

You got me there ,,but my question which color did you see the sun,,,:)
I wish guy work in the medical field with real pt ,,,it is not exactly what tv show you ,,,
I have been close to most of you with Covid pt . I wear those space suit(the optimun protection right now) which are very comfortable and I am still alive :)
too many information is out there and no one read the whole articles
if you dont want to get infected ,,,stay home for the rest of your life , wear glove ,,,,change them ,,dont touch your face ,,,and when you get it beside all your precaution (which are not very good anyway) i HOPE that your immune system will fight it
I am out :)

RE: Time to face reality: ‘No one is playing college football in the fall’
I think many of us on this board know doctors who work with COVID patients fairly regularly at this point. All of them that I know say this is serious, and one of the biggest ramifications of catching it is the long term effects. We don't know what those will be, but they don't look promising in many people at this point. Staying home for the rest of our lives is obviously not an option, and none of the people I am friends with and trust have ever suggested that. But they have suggested wearing masks in public and not putting myself in harm's way.

If COVID hits an entire FBS roster at once, nobody is expecting 80 players to die. But if all 130ish teams have this breakout, that would be over 1000 otherwise healthy young men, and it's not unreasonable to say there would likely be multiple deaths at that point. The question to me becomes, is it worth it to suffer a few deaths of players and coaches to play college football this fall? If your answer to this is yes, then we can just stop the conversation there.

The major league players are getting paid and have endless funds to protect them, and we are still seeing breakouts in baseball after 4 days of games or so. The NBA bubble appears to be the best setup of the bunch, and I think that may work simply because of how things are being run and the short time frame it will take place in. But, these guys are all being paid and have agreed to take the risk for their paychecks. College athletes are not officially being paid, and they should not be put into dangerous conditions because we love our college football. This will eventually die down, and we will develop a vaccine, or herd immunity will eventually take place. I want UAB to play football as much as anybody does this fall, but I will not put my morals to the side to have this take place. If we play football, I think it's a very bad idea.

Yeah, MLS used the “bubble” model in Orlando at the ESPN complex for the “MLS is Back” tournament and it’s been a huge success. Nashville SC and FC Dallas were “withdrawn” from the event when they had players/staff contract the virus during travel (they’ll play each other 3 times when the regular season resumes after the event to makeup for missing games), but they haven’t had a positive test among the remaining 24 teams.

Hopefully NBA will be as successful. NHL has setup “hub” cities - one for Eastern Conf and another for Western - to start modified postseason play next week. Essentially 2 separate “bubbles.”

Now as I’m typing this the Miami Marlins have had to cancel a game tonight as they have been stopped traveling back to Miami. MLB isn’t saying if there are positives in the club or what.

EDIT: Ok, now they’ve announced that the Marlins have 14 (!!) positives before leaving Philly for Miami
