Memphis in the new Super league? Hypothetical!
I heard a discussion this Week about Now being the perfect time to hire a football czar and reformulate top college football division. How does it impact Memphis?

Leave the NCAA.
New tv contracts.
New bowl structure that feeds the new football championship playoff.
80 teams, Five 16 team conferences.
Some movement would occur between conferences.

I know all hypothetical. But things are so screwed up right now and there is such little trust of the NCAA the timing is good.

The big question is there any way we get left out? 50 teams will. Some are easy to figure. It may not be the best 80. Geography, reputation, history of success, facilities, R-1 status....what makes the difference.

If teams remain in current
ACC- 13 teams + ND ( 2 openings
B10- 14 team. (2 openings
B12- 10 teams. (6 openings
PAC12 12teams (4 openings
SEC- 14 teams (2 openings

This is not a conference realignment discussion, it just looks like one.

RE: Memphis in the new Super league? Hypothetical!
I like six 14 team conferences. PAC adds 2, Bigxii adds 4, and the Armerican adds 3. That would be 4 more teams than in your scenario. Still a lot of dead wood like Vandy, Rutgers, etc. If we are being hypothetical why not just pick the best 80 put them in regional 8 team divisions and match two divisions for a conference then switch the divisional alignments every four years. Have a 9 game regular season every team plays the other 8 teams home and home. Conference champions seeded then ten at large invites to the rumble. Champion and runner up only teams who play 14 games. And to keep it interesting every year the bottom eight teams from top tier and top eight teams from the next tier playoff with the four losers from the top and the four winners from the next play with the winners of those games playing in the top tier next year. Also have a national lottery and only winners of that lottery get half the tickets and expenses to the championship game. The other half go to the two teams fans. Also free beer for everyone in America on game day. I do have a few more hypotheticals in case this thread goes anywhere.

It’d be interesting to see how quickly we’d improve against great competition and with tons more money.

RE: Memphis in the new Super league? Hypothetical!
All sounds reasonable, particularly dumping the NCAA altogether. Have, as is current, AD’s for each school and League Commissioner’s. Have a CEO that oversees all leagues with Commissioner’s governing as a group when problems arise or sanctions need to be addressed. All with clear cut rules and how to address, no more of NCAA throwing poop against the wall and making decisions at their discretion.

The real plus, ad revenue, sponsor $’s, etc., all go back to the schools with equal shares. With the NCAA cut out completely there will be much higher payouts to all parties.

To Hell with the NCAA, they have ruined their own brand as well as any integrity they ever had.

GTG!

The big schools have zero reason to leave the NCAA.

I think this would be the biggest hurdle.

Why would the P5 share that money?

I don't see a way this new league will not diminish the current checks teams in the P5 receive.

The "haves" don't want the "have nots" on equal footing... So don't bet on any potential solution that gives any of us "have nots" a leg up.

Oh, I'm very aware. But I'm not so paranoid as to think "they" would not allow a couple of us to take the place of a couple of their coat-riders, if it could increase the pie and if it were even possible politically.

I think you underestimate having control and the value of negotiating a new bigger contract with a legitimate playoff. That’s a cash cow that has much better potential long-term than the current free for all model.
Especially if we lose this season and everybody misses the TV paycheck.

I think you are more likely to see things go the other direction. The elite teams will separate out into a 16 team league or whatever the number is. You are see something similar emerge in European soccer.

Those elite teams will then negotiate new TV contracts that will make them even more $$$.

There is really no sense in Alabama splitting money with Ole Miss like it is in the current model.

If they can maintain their current payout I am sure they will agree.

You could be correct that I am underestimating the additional funds that could be generated by his model... But I just don't see it as possible.

No one is asking for a leg up, just that they take their knee off our neck.

I highly doubt any current P5 team would be left behind or essentially kicked out of the club. They would find something to sue over and keep it tied up in court forever. The questions is IF something like this ever happened would they expand and would we have a chance at getting a seat at the big boy table.

I don’t think so. One 16 team super conf leaves too much inventory on the table and 16 teams doesn’t allow for the ups and downs as college teams develop.

It may not be 80 teams but they will standardize the numbers in each league, the number of league games required and number of non-super conference teams you can play. Even Bama, Clemson and Ohio State have had bad years, super coaches don’t last forever and the public loves some underdogs.
