BTW, visited Rhode Island fan board (lurking) and some there are as worried about possibly losing NIU "buy" game as NIU is about losing Iowa game. They also lost an Ivy game with Brown.

One would only have to assume if NIU were to lose its money games, they would also have to drop a game like Rhode Island.

Wouldn't you have to cancel all games in order to legally support that clause?

On the other hand, pressing this could bite a G5 in the a** in future when trying to schedule against the P5 for $.

One alternative: partial payment now (helps current G5 finances) counting against payment for future game.

This was going to be the basis of my pushback.

Okay. There is a clause that states you can back out if there is an epidemic/pandemic. Fine. But, that doesn't hold water when you don't cancel ALL of your games. The pandemic isn't just a risk during non-conference games.

I'd think, these smaller schools could push forth the treat of a lawsuit and the P5s will have to pay up or play.

And, tbh, I'd be just fine with them simply paying up.

Of course, if the NCAA pulls the plug on the Fall season, this is all for naught. But, then that would effect everyone and not just the G5s.

Right, doesn't seem they can apply a pandemic clause in this case to cancel a game when they are still choosing to play a 10-game season. The clause would seem to only be applicable if ALL games were cancelled because of a pandemic.

No one is forcing the Big Ten to not play non-conference games. They are CHOOSING that option.

I did not want to believe that but with things getting worse, not better, it’s the most likely outcome. A couple vaccines are on track to be ready by the end of the year. That’s the only logical thing now. Hope those vaccines get here by the end of winter and start play then. Maybe still abbreviated seasons.

This will have a devastating impact on NIU, bye bye recruits as no money for the 85 scholarships.

Of course, if the NCAA pulls the plug on the Fall season, this is all for naught. But, then that would effect everyone and not just the G5s.

If the NCAA pulls the plug, there is no debate.
However, there's no guarantee it would be financially worth doing and that small schools would win a lawsuit. We don't know the specifics of clauses and it would be easy to argue the clause in the contract is for that specific game. Obviously the P5s could make the point that the risk of a pandemic is lessened when it comes to conference games because conference members are all having to operate under the exact same set of rules, methods, etc. when it comes to combating covid. The P5s could (and probably would) argue successfully that non-conference foes can't be held to the same policies, procedures, etc. for covid thereby making the non-conference game riskier. As much as we want the money, we have to look at things from the opposite side, and yes, you don't want to burn bridges now in order to preserve future opportunities. The one certainty is that guarantee money will more than likely be more important in future years.
Once again, remember some Huskie history. Based on existing contracts, NIU was supposed to play at Wichita State in 1982, however, the Shockers decided to drop football. There was a contract but WSU essentially said: "sorry, sue us." NIU went 5-5 that year unable to find another opponent and Wichita was not required to do anything to help us. Yes, everyone can sue, but it's not always worth it financially and there's no guarantee of a win.

Big Ten to Conference-Only Schedule
Nice article.

Also included was an article about BYU's options, even a suggestion to join a conference for 1 year.

RE: Big Ten to Conference-Only Schedule
Northern's future FB schedules call for a game at Iowa in 2025. There is an open slot on the 2024 o-o-c schedule, but that would mean three road games (at Notre Dame and New Mexico State, home v UMass). I'd rather see that open slot filled with a home game (BYU if cancelled this year?) That said, how about making a MBB deal with Iowa for 2021, 2022, 2023 or something? Maybe a home-home ... bet that Convo game would draw well. Maybe throw in a WBB game too. Get something.

No chance. Iowa’s road games since 2016:
- Syracuse (ACC/B1G Challenge)
- Iowa St (CyHawk)
- Virginia Tech (ACC/B1G Challenge)
- Iowa St (CyHawk)

RE: Big Ten to Conference-Only Schedule
It was just an idea, since I don't know what Iowa's future MBB schedules will look like. Add possible future cuts in travel costs, in-season tournament limits, whatever. Although further off, consider the on, maybe, sorta off, conference-only, maybe-no-season shifting sands concerning FB, though I think there will be a BB season (maybe spring 2021 only). So far the cancellations and limits have concerned "fall" sports, not "winter" and "spring," if going by the seasons.

RE: Big Ten to Conference-Only Schedule
Just checked Iowa and Maryland official websites.
--- Iowa marked games vs. Northern Iowa, Iowa State and NIU as "cancelled."
--- Maryland doesn't even list-non-conference games.
NIU website still lists all games as previously scheduled, altho times are TBA.

Just for info.

NIU's and MACs D1 days probably came to an end with these events. It was happening anyway, just was sped up by the virus and the response to the virus
