I'm glad our board is full of epidemiologists!

It's amazing how many problems common sense can solve

It is not a significant illness for anyone under 60 ...
[/quote]

In fact, it might be. We're learning more about COVID-19 every day. It looks now like many people (all ages) don't completely recover from this. You lose the symptoms and develop antibodies, but you may suffer lifelong health issues from heart, lung and kidney damage, brain damage, neurological damage (e.g. balance problems).

Until we know for sure what the after-effects of this new virus are, you might want to avoid catching it. It's not the flu.

I have used words like "might" and "may." People who post things like you did as a fact are the reason why young people are hosting "Catch COVID-19!" parties. They think it's "not a significant illness for anyone under 60..." Are you certain enough of that to let your child or other family member get infected? Where is your data?

The sooner we get more info on the long-term impact of this disease, the sooner we will probably see athletes bailing like crazy to protect their careers.

Yes, like wearing a mask, social distancing, and not risking the long-term health of world-class athletes until we know more about the long-term impact of catching and "recovering" from the disease.

Glad you agree that believing you know all there is to know about this disease (e.g., it doesn't really hurt anyone under 60) is simple-minded.

Sometimes we get so hysterical that we forget to use common sense. I think that is clearly true right now.

Some are truly obsessed with the virus, not sure they can move on to normal life.

Yes, you are correct. The deniers are obsessed with ignoring science (or just the daily numbers) and are killing themselves at a rapidly increasing rate, ensuring they can't "move on to normal life." You are dead right.

RE: Big Ten to Conference-Only Schedule
The Big Ten says they don't want to travel as a reason. They just buy all their non-conference home games anyway.

I counted 33 home games and only 9 away games in the Big Ten non-conference schedule. It must be rough only playing 79% of your non-conference games at home. Oh my the travel...

I think the real reason is they don't want to pay out all these guarantees if they can't have fans in the stands or be allowed to fill up their stadium to max capacity.

Rutgers had a game scheduled 60 miles away at Temple that got cancelled but having Nebraska fly halfway across the country is ok.

That's exactly the reason.

The whole "flexibility and control in our scheduling" rationale is vague and nonsensical.

RE: Big Ten to Conference-Only Schedule
I can see a combination of motives, such as ...
--- protect the conference schedule first
--- cut costs by eliminating payouts to non-conference schools
--- be able to more easily to move games around through "open" weeks over a 13- to 14-week period in case of Covid-19 outbreaks (with non-conference opponents, moving games around would require considering the other team's other games and schedule = a lot more shuffling).

That said ... wouldn't it be just as easy to select the games with opponents geographically closest? As pointed with the Rutgers-Temple, Rutgers-Nebraska example.

If there is a season -- following the B1G's action, and what other conferences might do -- I could see the MAC doing a similar thing, but with a change ... play all in-division opponents (5 games) with 3 home/2 away or 2 home/3 away ... but with three other-division games being against those closest geographically to reduce travel costs. Balance the schedule so everyone has 4 home, 4 away. Some of those will still have to be weekday nights if ESPN needs to fill the schedule, but I would hope no more than 2 (1 H/1A) for each.

BTW, I wonder if the financial hit Northern will take also may include not getting paid some portion of the ESPN $$ for games not played. Again, the "secret" details of the MAC/ESPN contract come into play.

Yeah...that “it only kills .5%” or whatever is really bad advice. Measles has a .2% death rate but it can trash your immune system for years.

Wouldn't you have to cancel all games in order to legally support that clause?

On the other hand, pressing this could bite a G5 in the a** in future when trying to schedule against the P5 for $.

One alternative: partial payment now (helps current G5 finances) counting against payment for future game.

This was going to be the basis of my pushback.

Okay. There is a clause that states you can back out if there is an epidemic/pandemic. Fine. But, that doesn't hold water when you don't cancel ALL of your games. The pandemic isn't just a risk during non-conference games.

I'd think, these smaller schools could push forth the treat of a lawsuit and the P5s will have to pay up or play.

And, tbh, I'd be just fine with them simply paying up.

Of course, if the NCAA pulls the plug on the Fall season, this is all for naught. But, then that would effect everyone and not just the G5s.

FYI, that statement is from the Middle Atlantic Conference. Different MAC.

Saw this on another board so checked the link and brought it here. Talks about game cancellations per "force majeure" and about possibilities of lawsuits over same. Interesting read, IMO.

RE: Big Ten to Conference-Only Schedule
PAC-12 announced on Friday it's going conference-only for 2020. Links is on the Covid-19 and college sports thread if interested, and since it's another P5 (but doesn't impact NIU directly) also made a thread. Use/ignore at will.

BTW, visited Rhode Island fan board (lurking) and some there are as worried about possibly losing NIU "buy" game as NIU is about losing Iowa game. They also lost an Ivy game with Brown.
