RE: Big Ten to Conference-Only Schedule
MAC will lose 11 B1G $ games. NIU loses Maryland and Iowa. HustleBelt estimates the MAC revenue hit to be $15 to $18M.

BGSU loses $2.2M for the Illinois and Ohio State game.

B1G is probably even MORE profitable without having to pay any guarantees.

If other P5s follow suit, the G5s could be in real trouble.

RE: Big Ten to Conference-Only Schedule
Look for the MAC and all other conferences to follow suit.

Before the month is out, the next announcement will be for the NCAA to cancel fall sports altogether.

If this does happen (and I expect it will), I am thinking of letting Athletics just keep whatever I paid for this year (tickets, seat upgrade, game benefits, etc.). They will be hurting really bad financially, especially with the confirmed loss of two B1G (big money) games.

Yikes, how much were the Iowa and Maryland guarantees we just lost?

We are going to have no choice but to cut some sports teams and coaches and staff (including their salaries).

I bet baseball is one of the top ones on the chopping block. Can't be cheap to play your first 20 games on the road down south and out west.

NIU could lose 6 million plus from their revenue stream. 2 million from games, reduction in student fees due to enrollment and drop in attendance. His days in D1 might be ending

Correct. There are very few businesses in existence that could shut down for a year while maintaining their regular expenses. Something has to happen, and it will not be pleasant.

I think the NCAA needs to have a serious discussion on the minimum sports team requirement for a school to play at D1 level. I think it is currently 17 sports are required.

Stanford just announced it will cut 11 of its sports programs. This is affecting everyone and will hurt G5 schools the most. P5 conferences still make a ton of money with TV contracts and donors. I think Big Ten and SEC make more in TV revenue than we spend on our entire athletic department.

They had 36 so they were probably looking for an excuse to cut some.

It's looking like the other P5s will indeed follow suit. The ACC said they'll help out Notre Dame with as many games as they need. Not sure what will happen with BYU. Their first four games were supposed to be against Utah, Michigan State, Arizona State and Minnesota. They also had later games scheduled with Mizzou and Stanford. The independents may have to get together and play round robin. Home and home with New Mexico State. Also, does the MAC allow us to play them if the MAC goes conference only.

Will, in all likelihood did and still are.

RE: Big Ten to Conference-Only Schedule
I wonder if colleges that drop all or most DI sports will expand intramural sports. Each student team could be assigned a coach and have one practice with a coach each week, then practice on their own the rest of the week. I don't know what intramural athletes get now, but maybe with a new expanded program, they'd get uniforms, travel to a statewide championship, qualify for nationals? To get expanded perks, each student would need to pay $50 to $100 to defray costs. The university would pay the travel expenses for coaches, uniforms and state and/or national championships.

Big intramural programs might be a draw for high school athletes who aren't going to get a scholarship or make it to the bigs. They wouldn't have to make the same commitment as with joining a DI sport, but they'd still get to play sports in college.

I know the tennis industry has created TennisOnCampus to expand play and offer national playoffs.

Sean T needs to be on the blower to Cincy and Iowa St to replace these games. Big Ten overreacted.

RE: Big Ten to Conference-Only Schedule
Story link I posted on the Covid 19 and college sports thread discusses impacts on MAC but does not give specific NIU $$$ info. I also added a link to the list of cancelled games for all.

I would expect a reaction story/something from NIU soon ... but who knows. I've seen little/nothing on any Northern contingency plans along the way, but maybe I missed it (?).

As for football at all, two things come to mind:
--- The reason given for the Big 10 decision is to allow the ability to move games around a 13- to 14-week period if a team has a Covid-19 outbreak. The same would apply if MAC goes conference-only.
--- Northern has to weigh the costs of operating Huskie Stadium regarding revenues from attendance, maintenance, utilities, plus any extra costs of testing, etc. Social distancing numbers don't look good per revenue. The numbers under the 20% attendance limit: 23,595 x 20% = 4,719 allowed. Subtract refunds on tickets sold, loss of vending sales, etc.

Don’t we have a contract with Maryland and Iowa? Do they have to pay us some form of buyout?

Hard to see BYU being independent having a season unless they align with the Mountain West. I don’t see them traveling to DeKalb. Can’t see Maine traveling either.

That gets us down to conference games only. Unless we happen to pick up some in state FCS schools, if they even have a season.

I believe the force majeure provisions might apply, however, that would be a hard case to make if they add any additional B1G games beyond their scheduled 9. And, from what I have read, they intend to add one and play 10 conference games.

Seems to me, they are certainly trying to eliminate their guarantees.

Depends what cancellation clause says. For example, per USA Today (see link on "Covid 19 and college sports" thread), the Illinois contract with Bowling Green specifically lists an epidemic as cause to walk away. Ohio State's contracts with Buffalo and Bowling Green say " ... other unforeseen catastrophes or disasters beyond the control of either party." Also, Northern's contract with Rhode Island would pay URI $400k, according to a herosports posting (see thread "FCS guarantees including URI @ NIU") but I don't know what the "out" clause says.

Also, was NIU paid anything in advance? That's happened before, as I recall.
