It's my understanding the FDA only uses studies that represents the U.S. population. For example, UK trial wouldn't have any Native Americans included.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/oxford-astr...1609317308

1. Two shots are required.

2. AstraZeneca’s vaccine uses a traditional vaccine strategy by placing a weak virus strain from a chimp into the body which then causes an immune response.

3. The shot - vetted for safety - s 62% effective compared to 95% for Pfizer and 94% for Moderna. However, a small subset were given a half dose followed by a full dose which resulted in 90% effectiveness. Scientists say more study is needed to explain the 90% figure.

4. The AstraZeneca, Pfizer, and Moderna vaccines should be effective against the newly identified CV-19 variant.

An aside: What is the issue with using UK data for the FDA evaluation? The UK has an advanced medical system and first rate medical research capacity and is a democracy. They would not unleash an unsafe drug upon the public.

Also 100% efficacious against severe disease.

A couple of days ago Astrazeneca's CEO or someone like that stated that the vaccine will be as efficacious as Moderna and Pfizer vaccines which means by 95%. They said the data would be published later. The issue apparently was the timing between the two doses.

This is the latest on the variant, the deletion that has increased transmissibility first discovered in the UK. The variant increases transmissibility over the non variant by 0.4 to 0.7 --- so the reproductive number for this is 1.4 to 1.8. For whatever reason it is infecting under-20s the most

And right on cue the variant has been found in California and Colorado. The FDA needs to get off his ass and approve the AstraZeneca vaccine.

“US officials are considering giving people 2 half doses of Moderna's COVID-19 shot to speed up rollout, vaccine chief Slaoui says”

Evidence apparently exists that half doses are as effective as full doses in folks between 18 and 55. FDA approval is needed.

Although the tweet is directed to Tennesseans, I surmise the treatment’s efficacy transcends state lines. :)

According to the article, early data shows a 33% decline after two weeks. Israel has vaccinated about a 1/4th the nation - the highest world rate. Finally, the side effects are no worse than other vaccinations.

This Nature article describes the spread of SARS CoV2 and concludes that it will likely remain in the world population resulting in almost everyone eventually either getting the disease or gaining immunity through vaccination. After which reinfection and viral shedding (spread) remain. Those whos immune systems have previously been exposed to likely have common cold like symptoms. Compares this virus to the other four endemic common cold coronaviruses and the likely similar history of those viruses. Predicts a similar path for SARS CoV2.

In a similar vein this study looked at 43,000 individuals who had a previous infection. The chances of re-infection was shown to be 0.1% (in this study.)

Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine update:

1. It is in a late-stage study of 45,000 volunteers.

2. Results of the late stage study could be available within two weeks.

3. It requires only one shot and may be shipped unfrozen.

4. If approved by regulators, distribution may start in late February.

Drugmaker plans to ask U.S. health regulators to expand bamlanivimab’s use to protect nursing-home residents and staff from Covid-19

In sum, the drug was found to prevent 57% of CVV-19 infection among staff and residents and 80% for the residents alone. The side effects were seldom and minimal (e.g., headaches).

Linked is expert opinion on the new analysis published by the UK yesterday suggesting that the new virus variant maybe actually more deadly (13 or 14 out of 1,000 vs 10 out of 1,000) as well as more transmissible. They note some limitations of the study but also their concern.

My positive news is that my wife and I got our first innoculations of the Pfizer vaccine yesterday. Our second shots are scheduled for February 12th. And two weeks after that, I guess we'll have reached full immunity, or so they say...

Anyway, a light at the end of the tunnel, at least for us.

The bad news is that we had to be of a certain age to qualify.

Man I cannot wait to get the vaccine. Jealous doesn't adequately describe the feeling lol. These mRNA vaccines are hellaciously good. If you don't mind, have you had any side effects yet? The usual ones are simply an indication that your immune system recognizes the (pseudo) threat and is kicking in.

International team of scientists identifies new treatment for COVID-19 that appears to be far more effective than drugs in use now

Quote:From a rare marine sea squirt found only in the waters around the Spanish island of Ibiza comes a potential COVID-19 treatment called Aplidin that researchers say has proven 27.5 times more effective than the well-known remdesivir in human cells in the lab.
