There is no substitute for human trials. Without human volunteers for testing, no vaccines would be possible in a country like the USA. I commend the volunteers willing to take the risks on behalf of older folks like me and for the risk adverse.

A study that shows that 35% of blood donors that have never been exposed to covid-19 still show reactive immune cells to covid-19's spike protein (used to infect the cell.) The covid19 spike has a very close relationship to other endemic human coronaviruses spike proteins and possibly the source of this immunity. 35% is a lot and probably explains the asymptomatics. If it proves successful, a vaccine being developed by a little-known company called Novavax could be manufactured at the university to help get as many doses to the public as possible. But, Novavax has never before produced a vaccine for public use.

The Trump administration awarded the University Systems Center for Innovation in Advanced Development and Manufacturing a $265 million contract to ramp up to mass manufacture a potential vaccine.

As long as the side effects of eventual Covid-19 vaccines are transient and not severe, these would not be sources of alarm — in fact, they may be signals of an immune system lurching into gear. It’s a simple fact that some vaccines are more unpleasant to take than others. Think about the pain of a tetanus shot, for instance.

The biggest issue with the Moderna vac candidate, aside from apparent rather severe reactions in stage 3 trials (enough to remove a substantial number from the trial) is that it permanently alters your RNA. Such approach has never been allowed & carries ethics & safety concerns. Should add for context, I am far from anti-vaccine, taking, benefiting from a variety of vaccines over my lifetime. But I am quite uncomfortable with the idea of altered RNA.

Thanks, an interesting note that I read elsewhere is that your body normally responds with a number of different types of antibodies. Using one antibody here runs some risk of allowing any latent, unaffected, mutation to now take advantage and proliferate. Using two different antibodies makes this much less likely. They're using two different monoclonal antibodies here for that reason.

The Novavax vaccine passed Phase 1 in human trials with excellent results. No adverse reactions except for things like soreness around the shot. *Created an immune response 4 times greater than seen in your typical covid-19 convalescent patient.* It's really looking good on the vaccine front --- the candidates are really stacking up now:-)

20,000 more Americans have died while the FDA has delayed since July 1 a new emergency use approval for outpatient use of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) for COVID-19.
On July, 1 Henry Ford Hospital physicians and researchers in Detroit filed an urgent request to FDA Commissioner Dr. Stephen Hahn for a new outpatient Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for FDA approval of HCQ to be used in early treatment for COVID-19. Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Institute in Dallas, issued an urgent appeal supporting the Henry Ford EUA application, based on their clinical study of prophylactic use of HCQ in their own medical workers. Baylor cardiologists emphasized there were no adverse cardiac outcomes in their own or the Ford study.
Henry Ford’s new clinical trial found an impressive 51% reduction in deaths if HCQ was begun within 24 hours of admission to hospital. An outpatient primary care study by Dr. Vladimir Zelenko, using HCQ, azithromycin and zinc given within less than 7 days of COVID-19 symptoms, showed approximately 80% decrease in deaths, and less than 1% of his patients needed to be admitted to hospital. These U.S. early intervention studies extraordinary results show how many lives can be saved with early HCQ treatment.
If the FDA had acted quickly on the Henry Ford and Baylor approval request for HCQ, we can reasonably consider that 16,000 lives could have been saved since July 1.
EUA applications do not have to take long to approve, when well documented rationale and supporting research is presented as Henry Ford team and Baylor cardiologists did.
HCQ is already an FDA-approved drug, unlike remdesivir, which had almost an immediate compassionate use authorization granted that has now been expanded for early use despite severe side effects. The former director of the FDA subagency BARDA, Rick Bright, Ph.D., submitted an EUA for HCQ approval for hospital use at 11:30 pm on March 28, 2020. Dr. Hahn’s approval was granted a little after midnight, March 29, 2020. Approval in about 30 minutes.
We have been waiting almost 30 days for Dr. Hahn to issue approval of the Henry Ford EUA application for outpatient use. Dr. Hahn has stated that we need more data. Henry Ford and Baylor doctors have already provided research documentation stronger than in Rick Bright’s March application, and included current COVID-19 studies from the U.S. and other countries.What amount of “data” will ever satisfy Dr. Hahn?

New York City councilman, says he nearly died of COVID-19 earlier this year, but hydroxychloroquine saved his life.

“I couldn’t breathe, very weak, couldn’t get out of bed. My doctor prescribed it. My pharmacy had it. Took it that day and within two to three days I was able to breathe,” Vallone told The New York Post. “Within a week I was back on my feet.”

“We were in panic mode when I went down because I didn’t have a lot of immune response,” he added. “I needed something to stay alive.”

Paul Vallone wasn’t the only one who became a believer in the anti-malaria drug’s effectiveness in treating COVID. His brother Peter, a former city councilman who currently serves as a civil court judge in Queens, couldn’t deny the drug worked after seeing how it helped his brother.

Peter Vallone has a theory why there’s resistance to accept the drug’s potential.
“I guess all those doctors who are prescribing it are right,” he said. “This drug is already on the market and the patent is up so it’s cheap. A new drug won’t be. So big money does not want this drug to be used. Always follow the money.”
