Why wouldn't they?

Because you're not getting the same type of services you would get if you were on campus.

You're missing the point. They receive the same services as in state students. Now, if you wanted to argue that all tuition should be reduced if classes are online, sure. But regardless of where and how classes are done, out of state students pay a higher rate than in state students because they have not contributed to the tax base that funds the state institution.

Gotcha! Regardless, out of state students are willing to pay additional out of state cost because of the experience of being on campus in addition to the educational aspect. If all you're able to offer is online services out of state students will be better off finding an in-state school to attend for the year and save a bunch of money.

And I have spoken with several parents who live out of state but their kids attend college in state and they're not happy with having to pay out of state tuition if they will only be offered online courses. Regardless if the parents do or don't understand the tax part of it, they're still not happy about it.

Seems like the schools have a legitimate reason for charging more for out of state students but then the out of state students and parents will also have a legitimate reason to stay in their home states. Points towards more kids staying at home to go to college. Would that hurt or help UAB? We have a much smaller base to draw from than some surrounding states. But we might get some high performing students that previously would go to Duke, GT, Vandy, etc.

Strange times.

I believe around 85% of UAB's enrollment is in state. So we aren't as reliant on the out of state students which would be helpful if more people decide to stay close to home.

Under normal conditions though, I know UAB's plan has been to grow out of state enrollment.

I don't know how common the practice is but some schools waive out of state tuition if the student signs up for certain courses of study. Two of my grandsons - one from B'ham and one from Memphis - attended MS State and paid no OST because of their declared majors. UAB may have that same practice.

I don’t know if it’s changed, but back when I worked at UAB, it was SUPER easy to gain in state status. Pretty much anybody who took the time to jump thru a couple hoops could pay in state tuition after freshman year

If the BOT allows for that to happen. They're too busy recruiting out of state students at Tuscaloosa. As of 2018, nearly 60% of UA's student body is from out of state. I'm sure that number as grown since then.

RE: 2020 season in the spring?
I don't see any way that they play in the spring. First off, any seniors with eyes on the NFL won't be playing. Second, if they play in the spring they'll be playing another season a few months later.

Either we play conference only, or the G5's play other G5's who are nearby regardless of the league, or there's no season.

Unless something changes drastically I don't think we get a season. P5's will move heaven and earth to play and get that big TV money, and of all the P5's the SEC will hold out till last before giving it up.

we play in spring or we do not play this year. unless there is a medical breakthrough it is not going to happen. americans are too selfish and stupid to take the simple precautions to keep this under control.

I don’t see us playing in the spring either. I think that we will either play conference plus anyone else we can get, conference only or not at all until fall of 2021.[/u]
