RE: Boise in the American?
Boise football would be a great addition... perhaps the best, realistic addition the conference could make.

If we are willing to wait 20-30yrs or more for them to build a program. It won't happen overnight. Liberty University is putting about $10M or more per year in their FB program to reach a competitive level in D1. Liberty started their program in the '70s in NAIA, and finally made D1 in 2017.

Our very own conference mate - USF - started their football program in 1997 with nothing but a trailer for the offices. In four years they were playing FBS-level.

Well there's that, but look further at the comparison. USF in FL, has the resources that a 50K enrollment provides vs about 16K at WSU. And USF, had the good fortune of starting their program after the U of Tampa which had been the bay area FB program had quit football. USF filled that college FB void. Then because of location, USF joined the BE and that financed their program. WSU has none of those resources or the population of the Tampa Bay area or FL location. And we all know the apparent weak football coming out of KS. So maybe they'd have a miracle development but their situation & history say otherwise - likely would take much longer development than USF. Should we stake our conference future on that?

Kansas is one of the most barren football states in America... Florida one of the most fertile. The idea of Wichita developing a competitive football program in a similar manner as USF or UCF is a pipe dream.

Yep Boise is a much more cosmopolitan and economically more dynamic place than Wichita. Wait, what! Boise is in Idaho!

Who said anything about staking the conference's future on WSU? I just said I prefer them to Boise. I also prefer WVa or TCU to Boise. Less chance of getting them than there is in WSU reviving football.

Yep. Florida produced 59 4-5 star recruits for 2020. Kansas produced 2. I imagine the talent gap is similar at the 2-3 star level. The Kansas Jayhawks haven’t had a winning record in 11 years with 5 different head coaches and have been terrible nearly every one of those years. After Kansas St takes the recruits they want, WSU could have trouble fielding a competitive FCS team.

We can only hope they can remain competitive in basketball, if Gregg Marshall ever gets the itch for a new challenge. That’s going to be a tall order in itself.

Countless FBS and a few FCS programs have shown you can start a DI program in five years or so.

No, I think you can easily count the number.

They dropped d1 football in 1987 (we used to play them when we were in the Missouri Valley Conference). WSU needs about $80m to kick it off again to compete in the American. The Koch bros (Wichita residents) drop more than that every year in political contributions. Football is much more interesting don't you think.

RE: Boise in the American?
Did I miss that the AAC is exploring expansion, or are we just bored and recycling again?

Logistically, it would be easy to pull off a "fb only" membership to offset Wichita State. You're talking 4 road trips a year spread among 11 AAC programs. That's like Memphis going there once every 3 years. The candidates for this start with Boise and BYU. (Wichita St building a program is not a good plan.) From the Boise side, it would be them making 4 road trips a year to replace trips to places like San Diego, Las Vegas, Hawaii, etc. The league could even fund the travel out of a pool. Outside of Boise or BYU, the less appealing candidates are Army, Air Force, or a couple of CUSA's (I guess).

Boise or BYU would undoubtedly help the football P6 profile. And it would help the tv contract. It would come down to whether the league wants more "part time" members and the complications from that (equity, branding, etc.).

Yeah this is all mindless speculation.

AAC said a long time ago, like not long after UConn announced their departure, that UConn will not be replaced.

Wichita State just got permission to demolish Cessna Stadium and build a smaller soccer/lacrosse field in it’s place. I doubt if they could bring back football unless the Koch brothers took a sudden interest in the program.

Unless the NCAA decides that it won't allow a CCG for conferences that have less than 12 members. If that happens it won't affect us, because we will be in the Big 12.

In 2016, they allowed conferences with less than 12 teams to still have a conference championship game, but only if they played:
A) Best team in each division (we have a division waiver for a couple of years)
-or-
B) Total round robin with every team in the conference.

Without UCONN we have 11 members, meaning we'd have to play 10 conference games to meet requirement B.

The waiver is only good for 2020 and 2021.

It shouldn't be that hard for ECU to get back to being a successful program. They have a loyal group of fans, and the in-state rivals they face aren't world beaters.

Tulsa went 10-3 in 2016. They aren't in the best situation sandwiched between Oklahoma and Arkansas, but they occasionally rise up.
