RE: Dixie State considering name change
Deseret State University?

Original name that Brigham Young and Co gave to the region.

You’re still DSU.

Trail Blazers still makes sense as a mascot.

Plus, most won't even pick up on the religious connotation - thinking it was just a spelling error.

That’s about as likely as going with Mountain Meadows University and calling the team the Massacre.

Mojave State might be an option though.

RE: Dixie State considering name change
I hope they don't change their name strictly because of current conditions. If their constituents really want to, fine. But they name has historical significance and isn't directly related to anything controversial. It's Dixie because Dixie meant southern, but not "the old south" and all attributed meaning.

Beehive is as much a state as Chicago, Dixie, and Tarleton.

Dixie’s original meaning is a nickname for the Southern states of America, especially those involved in the Confederacy. The southern Utah regional “Dixie” was founded by southern Mormons who set out to grow cotton in the area, which later led to Dixie Junior College (renamed in 1952) adopting the “Rebel” nickname and formally making the Rebel soldier its mascot in 1956. The confederate flag then became affiliated with the school in 1960; blackface minstrel shows and mock slave auctions were even held on campus. Dixie State College (renamed in 2000) eventually ended up cutting ties with all southern symbols and mascots in 2007 besides the name “Dixie.”

RE: Dixie State considering name change
Dixie is a France word and have been used in France New Orleans by a bank who created the Dixie bill. Dix is the word meaning 10 in France, and the Dixie bank note would be like a 10 dollar bill today. Dix is the France money. Dixie in Louisiana means the culture, and nothing to do with the south. Dixieland is a type of jazz music of New Orleans that were made famous by Louis Armstrong.

The Dixie of the south was actually derieved from the Mason-Dixon Line. It has nothing to do with the Dixie of the France terms.

Dixie is also a name of actual people and characters.
Dixie Carter, the late actress.
Dixie Carter of professional wrestling
Pixie and Dixie of the cartoon mice
There was a professional baseball player in the old days name Dixie.

Dixie is a word that have different meanings. If Dixie State being forced to change their name? They should be called Bending The Knee State.

Yup, Dixie State is in the need of a school image makeover.

I think that's too easy to confuse with Southern Utah University, especially since the acronym would be the same. I'd go with St. George State University. "St. George" captures the location and "State" needs to be in the title so the university can't be mistaken for a private sectarian school.

RE: Dixie State considering name change
Just looked it up and was surprised how large St. George has grown (90K). Passed through in the early 80's and it was definitely a town rather than a city back than.

St. George State University isn't bad but unless the push comes from their own constituents they shouldn't change. Name changes for image purposes alienate alumni and long term fans, especially when all reference to the old name is killed off, and don't necessarily get you off the hook anyway.

If current students don't like the name or it's hurting recruiting those would be good reasons.

Zion University would stand out - would be the only Z school.

Then the WAC could have two schools named after National Parks.

Honestly “Dixie State” sounds like a D2 program. I think Western Utah has a nice ring to it. Imagine the headlines “NM State basketball routes Western Utah in WAC play”
