Dixie State considering name change
UUSG is a mouthful but it tells you exactly where it is.

Utah State is the Ag school so what about Utah Tech?

Dixie State isn't a tech school. Western Utah seems like the best choice.

Even if you go with Utah-St. George, you have to figure out how to brand the athletic teams. Do you go with USG? St. George State? St. George? Western Utah solves all of that.

The petition being brought forward is to change it to Saint George State University. I doubt it happens.

Be like Auburn and name it after the city and ignore the state.

St. George University

St. George University

Some opportunity for confusion with St. George's University in Grenada, which is one of the Caribbean medical schools popular with US students. But probably not significant.

I still think Western Utah is a better marketing name. No one is going to know where St. George is anymore than they know where Dixie State is.

If Dixie St becomes Western Utah then Utah Valley should switch to Northern Utah lol.

Dixie's formerly part of the same education system as BYU before going public. I believe it was named for the city, back then. The switch to "Dixie" was after it was absorbed into the state system. And even though it refers to the city, the "Saint" part of "Saint George" itself has religious connotations & is kind of off-brand.

Southern Utah?

Taken.

Weber State is named for Weber County. St. George is in Washington County. Washington State?

No.

Santa Clara is right next door to St. George. Santa Clara?

That won't work.

Grand Canyon is right across the state border. Grand Canyon?

Darn.

Colorado River runs through the Grand Canyon. Colorado State?

I give up.

You kid but there is a Virgin River near St. George. Branches off from the Colorado.

You are over thinking it all. Just call them Southwest Utah State and keep it moving.

I’m still waiting for USF to become West Central Florida. But Dixie State is, in fact, the westernmost university in Utah.

Actually I like this idea. It may revitalize some interest in Utah Valley along the Wasatch front (that and if they had football they would get more attention from the local media).

Imagine the rivalries between Western Utah University (or University of Western Utah), Southern Utah University and Northern Utah University/University of Northern Utah.

Just change it to Mormon Land State. Unique, tells you where it is.

Best record in the rivalry games gets a Compass Trophy. Call it Clash for the Compass.

Why not just go with COVID State University?

Timely, but it might not last, I guess.

Oh well, I'm sure something will be decided on.
