Dixie State considering name change
Posting for news, not for political.

https://www.fox13now.com/news/local-news...m-its-name

Dixie State just went through a name change in 2000 (from Dixie State College to Dixie State University). I know one of the possible names discussed was University of Utah- St. George. Other possible names included was St. George University, Utah Southwestern University and others.

RE: Dixie State considering name change
I know it’s different for the Dixie fans and fans of Utah sports in general but in my opinion this might not be a bad thing. Most people don’t know the history behind the Dixie name for this school. Up until they joined the WAC I had never heard of Dixie St. and when I did I was wondering why we were adding a school from the Deep South. So maybe it wouldn’t be a bad thing to rebrand as something that would let the average person know what state or region your school is from. Going into a new league would be a good time to do it too I guess.

RE: Dixie State considering name change
Dixie State and the community of St. George have been wrestling with the identity of the institution long before social media cancel culture, as evidence in this Dixie State University: A timeline of branding changes article from 2015. I'm also going to go out on a limb and say that my opinion on their naming shouldn't really matter to anyone. If the University's administration, students, trustees, and/or broader St. George community decide "Dixie" is no longer useful in describing their school and decide to change it, more power to them.

RE: Dixie State considering name change
When Dixie announced its WAC intentions, I was interested to know why "Dixie", in....Utah? I did a little googlin' and learned this has come up before:

https://localtvkstu.wordpress.com/2013/0...sity-name/

They unanimously voted to keep the name in 2013. They did switch from "Rebels" to "Trailblazers" a while back.

"Recent study showed 83% of those with ties to school want to keep name as it becomes a university"

https://archive.sltrib.com/article.php?i...type=CMSID

Craziest thing of all to me, Dixie did not even become a University until 2000, and didn't adopt the name "University" until
2013.

Not specific to the University, but a little background from Wikipedia on how this area of Utah came to be referred to as "Dixie."

Already the settled area of the Virgin Valley was being called Utah's "Dixie." The fact that cotton would grow there, as well as tobacco and other semi-tropical plants such as the South produced made it easy for the name to stick. The fact that the settlers at Washington were bona fide Southerners who were steeped in the lore of cotton culture—many of them, at least—clinched the title. Dixie it became, and Dixie it remained. ... The name "Dixie" is one of those distinctive things about this part of Utah ... It is a proud title

— Andrew Larson, I Was Called to "Dixie" (p. 185) [Emphasis in original]

The origins of Dixie comes from the Mason-Dixon line (the border between Pennsylvania and Maryland); Surveyed by Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon in the mid 1700's. South of the Mason-Dixon line, were slave State. And, the unofficial Confederate anthem of the south was Dixie's Land.

Unofficial Anthem of The Confederate States - "Dixie's Land"

As opposed to the Anthem of the Union...

"Battle Hymn of the Republic" - American Civil War Patriotic Song

In 2007, Dixie St had approval from the school's trustees as well as the U of U to move forward with a "University of Utah - St. George" rebrand, but never took action on it. I wonder if they'd try to revive that plan?

Beehive State University They can change their mascot to a honeybee. Would that make the men's players drones?

For those not familiar with it their state nickname is the beehive state.

Except for maybe Red Rock and Tri-State, all those names are associated with someone who did objectionable things or are appropriated, and could eventually go down.

There is a Tri -State University in Indiana. Cant remember if it is hyphenated, but the name is taken.

The name of the Football Stadium is Already Zion (after the National Park). Maybe Canyonlands University? What about really Hot Place University?

I was actually in St George last week. Baseball stadium looks really nice.
