Division One Conference Changes – effective July 1st, 2020
Division One Conference Changes – effective July 1st, 2020:

1) CSU-Bakersfield to Big West Conference (leaving WAC)
2) UC-San Diego to Big West Conference (leaving Division 2 CCAA)
3) Dixie State to Western Athletic Conference (leaving Division 2 RMAC)
4) Tarleton State to Western Athletic Conference (leaving Division 2 LSC)
5) UM-Kansas City to Summit League (leaving WAC)
6) Purdue-Ft Wayne to Horizon League (leaving Summit League)
7) Robert Morris to Horizon League (leaving NEC)
8) Bellarmine to Atlantic Sun Conference (leaving Division 2 GLVC)

I think this is the complete list of Division 1 conference realignment effective 1 July 2020. Have I missed anyone?

You might note where programs have gone if not to the new primary conference, like RMU, Dixie, and Tarleton FB to FCS Indy.

Missed the biggest one - UConn returning home to the Big East.

Well, not exactly returning home. They stayed with the old Big East, and now they're joining the new one.

I realize it's all semantics, but I think of the "old Big East," the "classic" Big East, if you will, as the conference with Boston College, Providence, UConn, Syracuse, St. John's, Seton Hall, Villanova, Georgetown, and Pitt.

Six of those schools are about to be in the Big East, so in my view UConn is returning to the "old Big East."

Well, not exactly returning home. They stayed with the old Big East, and now they're joining the new one.

The Big East Conference, Inc., a New York corporation, acquired the rights and most of the assets of The Big East Conference, a Delaware partnership, now defunct.

There is no old Big East. The American Athletic Conference was founded in 2013, not 1979. The New York company is legally the Big East. It's like claiming NBC isn't the network founded in 1926 because Comcast now owns it instead of RCA.

It can get complicated, of course. The Big 12, for example, is not the Big 8+4. The Big 12 was a new organization and did not maintain the lineage of the Big 8, which was defunct after 1995, as was the SWC. However, the Pac-12 maintains lineage to the PCC and AAWU conferences, even though none were owned or acquired by the current Pac-12.

Well, I can't say I know much about the legal aspects. My understanding had just been that the old Big East changed its name to the AAC in 2013 and sold the old name to the new Big East conference. The AAC retained the old BE's BCS spot for the 2013-14 season, for whatever that bit of continuity is worth.

CUSA is legally the Metro Conference. They figured out it was easier to kick the Virginia schools out (ODU/VCU---UNCC had already left) than to create a new conference.

Interesting. Charlotte was in CUSA from the start though.

The Big East is gone.

UConn separated from the others before their return next season.

Pitt and Syracuse and BC are in the ACC.

So there's Georgetown, Villanova, Seton Hall, ST. John's and Providence with a bunch of midwest schools.

And later arrivals, Cincinnati and USF are in AAC. Miami, Virginia Tech and Louisville are in ACC. Rutgers is in Big 10 and WVU is in Big 12. TCU never arrived and landed in the Big 12.

Plus the Irish, who were all sports but football, and Temple, who was no sports but football.

Virginia Tech, not ODU. VT was waiting for a Big East football invitation and had not interest in playing CUSA football. VCU was just the odd school out.

Charlotte, as pointed out, was in CUSA from the get-go. VCU, VT and Dayton were the only Metro/GMC schools to not get invited.

I thought the AAC was legally C-USA.

Seems more like the old Cleveland Browns, now the Ravens and the new Cleveland Browns ... the Big East Conference Inc. was a newly established corporation, and acquired rights and assets by agreement, but it was the AAC which retained the NCAA autobid, because they were recognized by the NCAA as the corporate reorganization of the original Big East. The American was entered as the new name of the conference previously known as the Big East and the Big East Conference Inc. was entered into the books as a new conference.

I love my new computer. And I saved so much money making it too, since I used the motherboard, processor, memory, hard drive and power supply from my old computer when I made it.

It's funny: Butler, Creighton and Xavier will soon have been in the Big East longer than Louisville, Cincinnati and USF. They've already been basketball members longer than VA Tech. In a few years, they'll be in the league longer than Miami (which has been in the ACC longer than the Big East).

The Big East, despite wishful thinking of many, is not dead. It is nothing close to it. Looking forward to many successful and fun years ahead.

It “feels right” that Connecticut is back in the Big East. Xavier was an obvious addition to me. Butler and Creighton still seem a little forced but I don’t dislike the adds. I might’ve stuck at 8 with the Catholic-7 + Xavier for a little while but I can understand why they went to 10 immediately.

I like the idea of Saint Louis as #12. Dayton is often mentioned along with VCU as a possibility. I’ve even heard Massachusetts mentioned on different sites as the next addition which would be interesting. I don’t think the Big East goes to 12 anytime soon.

We have had a lot of movement this last month. We are watching a 50-year old conference melt quickly before our eyes.

RE: Division One Conference Changes – effective July 1st, 2020
With 20/20 hindsight, if the non-football Big East schools had a time machine... *let me adjust my tinfoil hat*... I wonder if they would make their separation from the football schools earlier, and how much earlier.

It seems like today's Big East fans are happier than they have been since at least the 90's, if not the 80's. They seem to have a genuine camaraderie, an identity, a culture. It's not the behemoth it was when Louisville, Syracuse, Pitt, Cincinnati, West Virginia, and Notre Dame were in the fold, but it's a basketball power.

I can't help but wonder if a separation had occurred in, say, 2001, before the ACC's first raid. The Football conference might have survived on as a power league, and the Basketball league certainly would have.

I think the key of when they did it was that they had already incorporated Marquette and DePaul in. Having those extra 2 schools to the 5 really helped things out IMO. Made it where they could add just 3 more to get to 10...

well, they're all official...

D1 now has 357 programs. Have a feeling that number will go down some- don't think some schools survive.
