You clearly know the source, but for some reason, you don't want to share it.

I put the first sentence into Google and got the source as the third result (as that sentence appeared in bold face on the search page results. It took three seconds. I'm embarrassed for you.

You telling others how things work on this board is not how this works. I didn't "claim something." I posted a piece from a scholarly article that any grownup would have read without wondering if The Deep State wrote it.

And how is this hugely relevant to the final point -- that large construction projects often bring in a large influx of outside workers (and the service people who then support them), who stay in the area? I gave one quick example to mollify someone who said that this FACT is out of touch with reality.

I "clearly" don't want to share the source? How could I hide it even if I didn't want you to see it -- it only takes three seconds to Google. I could post the link now, but I get to annoy a Karen by not doing it.

You are hoping to show that my source of information is Deep State, and therefore, my point is false, and that DeKalb won't experience an influx of new residents/workerswon't due to 3-5 large building projects -- and that means no locales with large building projects ever experience an influx of workers to do the work.

What is your point? Where are YOUR facts?

Not all Google searches are equal and if you've already searched or viewed something on your computer, the more likely it is going to show up in a Google search.

With that said, here are links to the first page of my Google search. If it's in here, let us know.

Ultimately though, it's clear that you are being defensive and evasive and clearly don't want people here to know the source to your article. I have no idea why since you seem to be so enthralled by the issue and how it is presented in this article.

It is odd that, when asked for a link to the source, you've gotten so bent out of shape and defensive, though.

Speaks volumes.

Let's assume my source doesn't exist. I wrote the report.

Do you believe that the 3-5 companies building large projects in DeKalb can do so without a significant import of laborers?

THAT'S the point of the discussion.

And, the grownups here don't need to see the source of an article that discusses post-Katrina labor hiring to make their determinations about whether or not my original proposition is utter fantasy, as you or your buddy suggested.

Most people here do, however, like seeing you toyed with because you can't do a simple Google search and it's driving you crazy. The source won't help you at all, but you're like a puppy with a stuffed toy, going crazy over it, because you've found a re herring to distract from the fact that you don't believe what you originally posted.

Truth speaks volumes. A link to an internet article doesn't.

Answer the question. Without my source. Because I'm asking you about your beliefs/knowledge on this subject. Stop changing the subject to, "Mommy, he won't give me a link!" and answer the question.

Do you believe these 3-5 large construction projects can all be completed with local (DeKalb) labor, or will be completed using just DeKalb-area labor, and that all of these laborers will earn local scale and leave when the projects are done?

Please, speak volumes to us.

Seems like they are obsessed with the community involvement and environmental sides of things. From their website:

"Community & Economic Development:

Guessing they have a Facebook tent at homecoming at some point, buy the naming rights to the Children's room in the public library, that kind of a thing? Hopefully they sponsor some items in the NIU Business/Computer/Environmental programs.

Just the extra tax $ is a positive, but guessing they try to bolster the community more than other normal industrial residents.

Maybe, but I'd guess most corporations make statements like this.

There may be many little benefits that together add up. The workers buying gas and food in DeKalb. The utilities a building that size consumes. Local lawn services. Snow removal. And tons of things I can’t think of that involves local supply for that buildings demand. Whatever the actual benefit is I know it’s better than not having them here.

Yep. First you look at FB employee spending. Then you look at their family members. Then you look at the construction folks who stay and their families. These two groups will create more jobs as more people need to serve them (waiters, grocery store cashiers, cab drivers, pizza delivery drivers, new restaurants, residential landscapers, plumbers, pest control, dentists, hair cutters, pet sitters, etc.).

It's not just the 100 FB employees who are so valuable, it's the multiplier effect.

Agreed, but FB has that allruistic start-up, community image they need to maintain. A tampon distribution warehouse that might make the same blanket statement not so much :)

Facebook is getting a 55% tax reduction for 20 years and this data center will only have an estimated 100 operational jobs. The general contractor, Mortenson, isn’t even an in-state company. Their headquarters is in Minneapolis.

I know we all want something to come and save our beloved NIU and DeKalb, but this ain’t it. Still, it’s interesting news nonetheless.

45% of something is better than 100% of nothing.
called bargoning

Many construction jobs over the next 2 years Mostly jobs will go to people within50 miles or less from DeKalb,,Thats better than no jobs at all

Once the Facebook and Farra Candy is in look for other companies to move as happened with Nestlle being the first in the I88 park..There is now 3M,
with multilple buildings Targeet,

Possibly a major truck stop coming....which means more tax money

Interesting, first you set the rules for the members of this board, then you determine what they care about or don't care about.

You also lied about what I posted, lied about your need for the source, wouldn't answer the original question and now lie about not being able to find a source you concede you don't need to make your point (which you admit you can't really make).

Sorry to tie you into a pretzel.

Peace out and enjoy your 4th weekend!

A Facebook datacenter will do a few things:
- Consume an enormous amount of electricity
- Lend permanent job security to a few local HVAC technicians
- Create a small pool of 50-150 well paid jobs
- Wipe out your local supply of enterprise focused geeks

I wouldn't look for "Facebook Stadium". A much better idea is to seek FB investment in the NIU CS Department. Facebook will be chronically short of local talent to fill their positions and NIU won't be teaching actual real world enterprise technology because no CS department outside of a tiny handful of the most elite do. That's part ignorance, part faculty stagnation, part due to the rapid pace of change in the field, and part due to the cost in keeping the curriculum up to date with constantly churning technology.

How does the Facebook Applied Computer Sciences Lab sound instead?

While I agree that any partnership with such a well known organization (even if it has questionable leadership) would be great in any capacity, I know myself personally would like to dream big.

Any stability and infusion of fan traffic or free marketing from the partnership would be ideal, honestly

That's not exactly true. There has been a change in direction in the CSCI department to teach more real world business technology by partnering with companies and doing actual projects. Covid-19 probably stopped some of the Spring initiatives, but I know it's on the docket as the head of the department was a grad student classmate, and a personal friend.

I haven't talked to him about what the Facebook Data Center means to the department, but I'm sure he is in tune and already has proposals started.

That dept has to be licking its chops, doubt they leave any opportunity to waste. From an article in the Midweek:

"...It's the kind of cutting edge tech development that can transform a region, said Bobby Hollis, director of global energy, environment and site selection for Facebook. Hollis said "without a doubt" cities which house a Facebook data center have seen a correlating rise in similar industries coming.

"If you looked at most of the places where we have actually constructed a data center, usually it's not long afterwards that we see other technology companies," Hollis said. "You can look at Iowa as a great example, it's well over five years into its process currently. Microsoft is also building in the same community, and Google was there before us."

He said Facebook looks to hire local because local workers know the lay of the land better, and other data center locations have found ways to utilize local workforce development pipelines as well, whether with local education institutions or otherwise.

"When we come to a community we are looking to be part of that community, and that includes the workforce that we want at our location," Hollis said. "It actually isn't very easy to hire from outside of the community because we do have an expectation that people will come here and live here for many years, people will have kids in the schools, spouses that participate in the community."

The biggest boon to the local economy will probably be the initial construction. After that isn’t it just basically like an Amazon warehouse?

Seems like they are obsessed with the community involvement and environmental sides of things. From their website:

"Community & Economic Development:

Facebook is committed to being a force for good wherever we work by providing jobs, growing the economy, and supporting programs that benefit the communities we live in.

Sustainability:

Our Sustainability team’s mission is to support Facebook’s ability to operate and grow efficiently and responsibly and empower people to build sustainable communities.

Leads company-wide strategy in driving operational excellence from design, construction, and operation of our business. We prioritize efficiency, water conservation, and supply chain excellence and are proud to say our facilities are among the most water and energy efficient in the world."

Agreed, but FB has that allruistic start-up, community image they need to maintain. A tampon distribution warehouse that might make the same blanket statement not so much :)

lol

Was this a "pissing match"?

I asked (actually I didn't but I supported) a request for a source to the article. He refused and said I was dumb because I didn't know how to use Google. I listed my Google search and then gave up.

If that's a "pissing match" then I guess I didn't even realize I was in a contest....

Delete away if it makes you feel like you've accomplished something and upheld your duties.

It went nowhere anyways....
