Someone at SI got very bored and came up with something that they obviously knew wasn't reality.

Pretty much. They through some crap against the wall to get clicks.

Do you mean European soccer and its relegation system?
It doesn’t work - you budget for FBS and then suddenly after a few years you have to go down to FCS and cut the budget in half, its almost like the death penalty. Many traditional European Soccer teams which were legendary in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s and were relegated (and some even somehow worked their way back) are still suffering from it today...AS St Etienne, Nottingham Forest, Hamburger SV and other clubs which once were powerhouses in their respective countries and even Europe are quite irrelevant now because of this relegation system. For instance, it took Scottish legendary powerhouse Glasgow Rangers years to fight its way back and even though Rangers are back now, they have a pretty much unknown team and low budget to work with. Sure schools like Indiana, BYU or Iowa State would be back pretty quickly (and massively weakened) but CUSA and SBC schools once relegated would most likely be stuck in FCS for many years. Do you want to take this risk?

Just another GASO fan that is having dreams of delusion that his school's program is equal to that of Auburn's, Bama's and UGA's programs. Really sad.

To sum it up a final quote from the article:
Quote:So, if you’ve made it this far, you might have noticed that technically an amateur team can win the Open Cup, which means technically an amateur team can win the Champions League. That also means that an amateur team from the United States could end up competing in the Club World Cup against the winners of the other five continental Champions Leagues, which means the likes of Real Madrid and Independiente. Yes, this actually could happen. Maybe it never will, but as long as there’s a chance, teams will fight for it.

GS, App, and currently NDSU, and a few others regularly fall or fell into the top 120 sagarin rankings. Eliminating them from the competition would be unfair right and counter productive right? This would be a problem for those lingering at the bottom of FBS. But geez if you can't compete to stay in over a five year period should you be there? NDSU spends half the money but is safely inside the top 120. The system would lend itself to financial flexibility with maximum scholarships but less attention to minimums. Competition creates incentive.
