I don’t know when this pic was taken, but the view is so different today. My guess is maybe the pic is five years old or so.

The grass intramural field in the bottom left corner is now a parking lot and primary location for Texan Alley, the tailgating area for football. This visitor side is now home to the $35 million Lonn Reisman Athletic Center and home side for football. There is a new field and track surface. The field house on the right is being completely renovated. The parking lot in the center is now two really nice residential learning centers. The road by the trees on the left side of the gym is a pedestrian walkway. The former coed dorm at the upper left has been completely remodeled into a residential learning center and is a rectangular shaped building with a courtyard housing our Honors College. The tree area just to the right of the upper center, is being transformed into a common area to better connect the business and hydrology buildings with the rest of the campus. The concrete parking lot in the upper center is now our new Engineering Building.

New arena will not happen in the near future. Wisdom expansion is the most possibly scenario.

Ok, my orientation of the gym was wrong. I assumed with three building additions encompassing three sides of the gym, the only direction Wisdom Gym could build out would be toward the tree line side. I am aware that the building also houses a pool and training facility among other things but I could not find a layout for the whole structure.

I also figured with prior concept plans to add a Special Events Center on site, the administration would not be interest in pouring even more money into a smallish basketball facility built in the 1960's or 70s. But considering the gradual drop in basketball attendance nationwide (today's Gen Z's and Millennials have a shorter attention span and other forms of interactive entertainment), there is really no need for a basketball facility to be built over 5,000-seats in size. If Tarleton State has 70-million-plus laying around, they could build a basketball arena as nice as the one at Cal Baptist.

In any case, Tarleton State will need to make some facility upgrades over time if they want make Gillispie's job easier. Gillispie is 60-years young right now. If your lucky, Tarleton might have him around for maybe 10 more years. BTW, this is what Tarleton State is recruiting against currently...

I've thought about that. He signed a 5-year contract, if all goes as planned, he'll get another 5-year extension. We do have to keep in mind he just had a kidney transplant. By the end of a 10-year run, BCG will be 70 and Lonn 75. I'm confident that part of their plan is to start grooming or recruiting their heir apparents. We know Lonn's son Chris will likely fill his shoes as AD. As for BCG, another good thing about him is he is very well connected in D1 coaching circles. He can start recruiting a replacement coach whenever he's ready to hang 'em up, or bring in an assistant to eventually take over a few years before he goes. HC at a Basketball school like Tarleton is a great place to be, and I'm sure BCG will help us bring in another good fit when the time comes.

I love it when you guys post pictures of your monstrosity arenas, all packed to the gills, knowing that GCU is the only team that actually fills theirs up on a consistent basis. Thats great and all, but the discoteque nightclub scene just seems phony to me, almost like its staged. But I digress....everytime you post those pics it reminds me of this:

A new arena won’t happen as long as Lonn is around. He loves the fact that the student section is 24” from the court and provides a unique atmosphere.

GCU had issues filling their arena this year. They upped the price too much. And it didn't help that they lost to Davenport to start the season. GCU fans realized they had a mediocre coach.

With COVID, Arenas will either remain empty this season (probably longer) or have less than 50% capacity. Any home-court advantage for any school has been nullified to a certain degree. Tarleton's Student Section being 24 inches away will no longer happen for the coming years.

Per the NCAA, GCU had an average attendance of 6978 in a building that holds 7000 (99.68% to capacity). Doesn't seem like much of an issue to me.

Keep it in mind, the reason this movie was made was because it was a remarkable event in Indiana history. Why? Because it doesn't happen often. Normally, the big school with the bigger fans support wins the game.

As for that NMSU game picture, keep in mind, under normal conditions (in a non-COVID year), the Athletic Department would feature at least one conference game (sometimes two) in a season where the community Packs the PAC. So you get the point, here is the top 15 attendance games in the WAC this past season...

1. New Mexico State (72) vs. Grand Canyon (52) - 13,960 (Pack the PAC #1)
2. New Mexico State (78) vs. UT Rio Grande Valley (62) - 11,680 (Pack the PAC #2)
3. Grand Canyon (71) vs. Illinois (83) - 7,498
4. New Mexico State (77) vs. New Mexico (78) - 7,268
5. Grand Canyon (87) vs. Cal State San Bernardino (60) - 7,190 (Season Opener)
6. Grand Canyon (58) vs. Northern Iowa (82) - 7,186
7. Grand Canyon (53) vs. New Mexico State (67) - 7,155
8. Grand Canyon (67) vs. Arkansas Pine Bluff (54) - 7,150
9. Grand Canyon (64) vs. Cal State Bakersfield (61) - 7,142 (Senior Night)
10. Grand Canyon (73) vs. Davenport (82) - 7,074
11. Grand Canyon (57) vs. California Baptist - 7,054
12. New Mexico State (59) vs. UTEP (56) - 7,048
13. Grand Canyon (69) vs. Utah Valley (73) - 7,034
14. New Mexico State (83) vs. California Baptist (50) - 7,015 (Senior Night)
15. Grand Canyon (80) vs. UT Rio Grande Valley (88) - 7,002

The point of the Hoosiers clip: size don't matter. I've said it before, your big ol' arena has a court that is the same size and dimensions as the court in little ol' Wisdom. And guess what? The game isn't played in the stands, it's played on the court.

And phantom makes a valid argument: if we do end up having a season this year, you can throw your fancy arena advantage out the window.

It is not played in the stands but in the minds of the players. Otherwise, teams would win on the road equally as well as winning at home. Large crowds with roaring noise do get into the minds of the players; positively for the home team and negatively for the road team. Nerves and doubts creep in. NMSU was 16-0 in the WAC last season so that Aggie team mastered their emotions on the road well. Jans is a road warrior. Not all coaches can get that type of performance from his players. Hoosier is a good movie because it show a small town basketball team overcoming the odds. That doesn't happen often. It's rare and noteworthy in the basketball landscape.

You got that right, and I'm betting on Billy Clyde becoming our Norman Dale.

We'll all likely be playing in empty to half-empty gyms and arenas this year anyway. It will truly be a coach vs coach and player vs player season.
