I highly doubt that contract will be completed by the look of things. Since we were an original Jordan brand, it'd be cool to be Jordan again.

As cool as I think the Jordan branding was, I don't like trying too hard to recapture the former glory. It'd be much cooler to have a run of success wherein our current uniforms are remembered as such, if only because our programs were successful while donning them. Imagine 20 years from now, we talk about bringing back "the Under Armor" uniforms.

For me it's not as much about capturing the past. It's just how freaking cool those uniforms were. I would want an updated take on them, but I think they could easily be modernized.

I mean, I guess they were cool in like 2000. But, literally thats 4 black rectangles on a white jersey and white trunks. Super imaginative? I think you are romanticizing the team those unis were associated with rather than their design...

Under Armour is paying UC $4.7M /year. As a frame of reference Nike is paying Memphis $2.1M/year. My guess is that is about what they would pay UC. That’s a huge gap.

Maybe it's because I was a teenager during those years, and my tastes for fashion haven't changed much since. I thought those jerseys were really cool then, and I still do. I didn't feel as strongly about the jerseys before that design or the ones after, and haven't liked any jersey design nearly as much since. Or perhaps you're right that it is the nostalgia for that era of Bearcat basketball. But if you Google "Cincinnati Bearcats Jordan Uniforms" you will find multiple articles and blog posts talking about how that was an iconic look, and how people still like that look today. So it's not just me.

RE: OT: Under Armour trying to terminate agreement with ucla
By the way, here is an article mentioning the UC Jordan block uniforms as one of the 15 best college basketball uniform designs ever: https://3bleacherreport.com/articles/131...ll-history

"Michael Jordan's brand of basketball uniform debuted with the Cincinnati Jordan Brand launch in 1997. The Bearcats were chosen as the first team to wear them and they featured the best uniform of the entire product launch.

The most distinctive feature is the block paneling on the side and the cut-off sleeves. These jerseys inspired thousands of people to buy them and were mimicked across the country in all levels of basketball.

To this date, they are the best-looking jersey ever worn by a Cincinnati player."

I'm not calling for a carbon copy. But great programs often pay homage to earlier eras with their uniforms, and I would love to see a modern take on an iconic design -- even if it's just an alternate uniform.

Nope best looking college basketball uni I've ever seen to this date besides some of North Carolina's jerseys (and really it's just their Carolina blue) and maybe UCLA's (again color scheme and just classic).

UC was also a very good team during that time. That makes a difference in people's perception also. An iconic team helped make the uniforms iconic...they were really cool though and being one of four Jordan teams was pretty cool too (I was at UC at they time so I'm very biased toward those uniforms too). Not to make this about the Bengals but their uniforms are pretty uniformly (pun) panned by NFL alums. If they were a dominant team in their history, the memory of their unis would be different. I don't mind them but wish the Brown family would be more open to going with a throwback look at times. Mike has said the current helmet is one of their trademarks and they won't wear a different helmet.

I think what we really want is to go back to being the team we were when we were in the Jordans.

I like our uniforms now. We've got a really distinctive and underrated brand.

Same thing with the Bengals. Their helmets may be the best design ever. If they weren't such idiots, those tiger stripes would be #1 helmet ever.

You are absolutely correct on your first point. People miss the 1990s brand and quality of player. It wasn’t just the Jordan Brand- those unis worn by Danny Fortson and co. circa 1996 were just as sweet.

With respect to the Bengals, the helmet blows. Would rather have the helmets from the 60s and early 70s.

The Fortson era uniforms were fine, but I don't just like the Jordan uniforms because of how good we are. I'm just saying that I straight up like the Jordan uniforms the best of any we've had. It seems like everyone wants to tell me why I like those uniforms instead of just accepting the fact that I like the damn uniforms. Sheesh. If others don't like the uniforms as much as I do, that's fine. My original point is that I would love to see a modern version of that uniform in use again (perhaps as a special tournament edition or something), but I don't expect everyone to agree with me.

100% agree with this...but, what's not to agree with. From what I've read, their football ops is probably middle of the pack right now as far as spending but he's still cheap when it comes to extras (you know...like an indoor practice facility!). I read that in the next couple of years, the NFL is allowing helmets to be changes for special games too. There was a discussion about the Bucs going back to their creamsicle colors for select games. Here's hoping the Bungholes are willing...but it will probably be too expensive.

UA financially have made many bad financial decisions that they are trying to overcome. They had premium new fabric/tech and they were the new cool company, but others quickly caught up on the dri fit etc. 2007 stock was in the $40's, today just above $8.

I don't think AU will, get out of the UC deal since UC gets pretty good national coverage and do well in merchandise revenue.

Efficient breach. Every contract may be voluntarily breached by either party. When it’s more economically feasible to break a contract and pay the damages instead of performing, it’s often encouraged by the courts. Have at it, hold your nose and take your medicine.

UA seems to have jumped into this business headfirst and is now perhaps figuring out that the return on investment just may not be there. Seems to be trying to get some of the largest burdens off of the books long term.

Who knows where this all goes with Under Armour. Fans on this board are informed enough to suggest UA over paid for UCLA given the demographics and how football and basketball were trending there. Ditto for Boston College which hasn't made any noise in the ACC in football or basketball, competes against winning pro sports in their market, and has a considerably smaller alumni/fan base than UCLA. Both are quality brands. Neither is the "it" school that kids are talking about in the world of collegiate sports these days.

UC would be well advised to ride this horse as long as possible given the favorable financial terms. And students, alumni and Bearcat fans can all play a part--buying and wearing the brand each season. If sales remain robust, UA, or any successor company will keep licensing agreements competitive.

RE: OT: Under Armour trying to terminate agreement with ucla
Listening to Alex Meacham's podcast, ALL the past players he has interviewed mention the Jordan uniforms and gear.

Some of the players from that era mention that it played a role in their committing to the program. All of the players from that era mention how opposing teams consistently commented on how much better the UC uniforms and gear were.

We can point to the success of the UC teams that wore those uniforms. But the most successful teams of the Huggs era were 92/93 and 93/94 (FF and EE). I love the uniforms from those two years, but they aren't remembered at the same level of reverence as the Jordan uniforms.

I am not a fashion designer, but they seemed to garner a lot of positive rep points for the program.

And we haven't had any uniforms since that look as good. Many of the Adidas uniforms were horrible. Most of the UA uniforms have been average / boring / predictable.

My opinion is that any little advantage that the program can obtain, they should pursue. If that means uniforms that bring a "brand" rep to UC, they should pursue it as long as they don't take a significant haircut on the $$ contract.

On the other hand I am 50 years old, so my fashion tastes are certainly very different than an 18 year old kid.

Does Jordan still carry the same level of reverence and worship among teenagers like he did in the 90's and 2000's?
