FCS guarantees including URI @ NIU
However they manage attendance at home games, with social distancing guidelines, Northern better make some money.

According to this 2018 report, Northern is paying (FCS) Rhode Island $400,000 for the Sept. 5 game at Huskie Stadium. Interesting, since as I recall (also FCS) Illinois State was paid $325,000/335,000 for the Aug. 31, 2019 game. (Please correct if in error; this is the info I was able to find.)

This (updated) June 2020 report confirms the URI payout:

(Note: Illinois State is getting $450k from Illinois, SIU is getting $500k from Wisconsin, and EIU is getting $500k from Kentucky.)

There's also an interesting link on the Hero page for FCS wins over FBS teams, if you need some leisure-time reading. Includes wins over NIU. Looking down the list, MAC schools got beat a lot.

This may answer the question as to why STF is scheduling a team like Rhode Island, Maine, or Holy Cross as opposed to the in-state schools. The in-state schools very well may be asking for a higher payout and the increase in ticket sales may not be enough to offset the price to schedule them.

Illinois and Wisconsin are in the Big10 and Kentucky is in the SEC; they can pay more. If you look at the chart (second link) other MAC schools top out at $400k like NIU. One point of the OP is that NIU is paying URI more than it paid Illinois State for a game one year earlier. Travel/motel cost? Fbschedules story said they had to file a public records request to find out.

IDK what Holy Cross is getting. I'd also like to know what Maine will get in 2021, EIU in 2022, SIU in 2023, and Illinois State in 2026.

Maybe if STF went to the fans and said "help us upgrade our home schedule," that might produce some donations. If the fans want better, help out. It would be a goal-specific request aimed at building something, especially since these are Saturday games. Seems a lot better than just saying "give us money."

The way its going NIU is going to have pay Rhode Island with some other currency. How much can be trimmed off that quarter million if they throw in the pig statue.
